Why be concerned with energy? For multiple reasons! The fossile fuel reserves are limited: 200 years for coal, 60 years for gas and uranium and 40 years for oil. However, the demand for energy increases in all the countries. From here 2020, the total population of the sphere should reach 8 billion inhabitants, that is to say 2 billion more than in 2000. According to the current trends, the world demand of energy should thus pass from 9,3 billion Mtoe (ton equivalent-oil) to 15,4 billion. Fossile fuel reserves will become exhausted all the more quickly. The European Union imports 62% of its energy resources and Wallonia 98%. We are thus dependant on the request on the worldwide market and this dependence should be accentuated in the next decades. Energy consumption also takes part, for 85%, with our emissions of CO2, emissions which are largely responsible for the climate warming of planet. Lastly, the use of fossile fuels contributes to the pollution of our environment. Vis-a-vis these challenges, we must strongly reduce our consumption of energy, in all the branches of industry. The energy performance of the buildings is thus a factor impossible to circumvent, whose influence is reflected in the long run. Architects, projects promoter, contractors and craftsmen of the building are essential actors in the restoration and the restoration of private and public buildings. It is with them that addresses this booklet, like with the teachers of the schools of architecture and the techniques of the building. To reduce the energy needs for the heating of a building requires specific tools and techniques, in constant evolution. Up to date information is thus essential. This is why my administration entrusted the realization of this work to several specialists, in order to help the originators to integrate these energy requirements in the construction industries and the restorations for which they have the responsibility. The reading of this work will contribute, I hope it, so that more and more of Walloon buildings consume less energy. [less ▲]

The present study explores a Multiple Criteria Decision Aid (MCDA) procedure, an aid to help project authors optimise the building envelope during the sketch design, where a significant number of choices are fixed, having a determining impact on the future building cost and use. The objective of the design method is the respect of building costs – for the building construction and use – and the energy performance improvement. An interactive tool has been developed within multicriteria and multiactors context. In order to improve the architectural response to the client’s and regulation requirements, it gives decision-making aids to: - the project authors: in making up the project architectural forces, in accordance with the actors’ objectives; - the client: in reaching his objectives of costs, building duration, comfort and functionality, while serenely assuming his responsibilities related to his building energy and environment performances. The design tool is organised in two linked modules, any actor may go in any module in any time: - the first one manages parameters describing the project requirements; - the graphic module allows to draw the sketch; it calculates geometric parameter values that it puts back in the first module. Permanently informed on cost and energy performances, the user can any time search for optimal scenario giving best satisfaction or compromise: he has at his disposal at lot of graphs illustrating the performance sensitivity to parameter variation, as well as an optimisation procedure using a genetic algorithm to find the most efficient parameter set. The software is organised to manage new building projects of housings, schools and offices (small to medium size projects). [less ▲]

Two main modules are linked, where the user interactively goes: - a first one manages parameters describing the project requirements; - a graphic pen-based module allows to draw the sketch; it calculates geometric parameter values and put them back in the first module. La politique énergétique des pays industrialisés glisse inéluctablement d’une préoccupation économique vers une préoccupation environnementale. Plus personne ne nie le réchauffement planétaire, dont seuls le déphasage entre émissions et effet climatique, ainsi que l’amplitude posent encore question. Parmi les mesures à mettre en œuvre pour l’enrayer, l’amélioration de l’efficacité énergétique réduit tous les risques de cette problématique. Dans ce contexte, le secteur industriel des pays industrialisés est parvenu à produire plus en consommant moins d’énergie, tandis que les secteurs résidentiel et tertiaire peuvent être considérés, d’un point de vue environnemental, comme les mauvais élèves de la croissance économique. Si le prix de l’énergie est un puissant moteur de régulation de la consommation dans le secteur résidentiel, le contexte économique actuel constitue justement un frein aux investissements économiseurs d’énergie. Or cette vision à court terme masque une impasse prévisible, qui concernera en premier lieu les populations socialement défavorisées ; la régulation économique ne jouant pas son office, cette carence justifie bien le recours à la réglementation. Lorsque l’on examine les réglementations thermiques mises en place dans les pays industrialisés, on doit bien constater qu’elles ne traduisent pas toujours des exigences de qualité énergétique, puisque le classement de différents bâtiments évolue très significativement suivant l’option réglementaire choisie. Ainsi, il est certes nécessaire de réglementer, mais le contenu de la réglementation doit être mûrement réfléchi pour être adapté aux enjeux auxquels le législateur souhaite répondre. Le poids prépondérant de l’enveloppe du bâtiment, élément architectural par excellence, est clairement avéré. Face à ce contexte énergétique, le concepteur est embarrassé : en butte à des matières difficiles à maîtriser, à savoir les aspects énergétiques du projet et les coûts en général mal gérés, l’architecte dispose de moyens scientifiques et économiques limités, qui restreignent sa capacité à y faire face. C’est en réponse à ce besoin qu’un outil de conception énergétique des bâtiments aux tout premiers stades de l’avant projet a été développé. Cet outil conjugue un ensemble de méthodes cohérentes permettant, aux acteurs d’un projet, de converger vers une construction optimisée selon les performances de coût (de construction et d’usage) et d’énergie (respect de la réglementation et consommations). Les aspects originaux de cette méthode sont l’étude de sensibilité paramétrique – permettant de vérifier la faisabilité du projet avant sa représentation sous forme d’esquisse graphique – et l’heuristique d’optimisation combinatoire (mono- et multi-acteur) ayant recours à un algorithme génétique générant des populations de solutions et conduisant à une solution améliorée. Les aspects didactiques de la méthode peuvent, de plus, aider un public peu ou mal sensibilisé aux problématiques énergétiques, dans les phases particulièrement critiques que sont les phases préliminaires de la conception. Ce travail résulte d’un constat d’Électricité de France souvent confrontée à la conception énergétique des bâtiments : les toutes premières étapes d’un projet scellent largement son comportement futur, tandis que la prise en main, par les techniciens, d’un projet architecturalement abouti se révèle peu efficace et laisse trop souvent des regrets quant au choix d’options désormais difficilement amendables. Le développement de l’outil d’aide à la conception énergétique au stade de l’esquisse a ainsi fait l’objet d’un parrainage d’EDF (Direction des Études et Recherches). [less ▲]

L'étude a pour but d'introduire, au stade de l'esquisse, une méthode rationnelle d'aide à la conception de l'enveloppe d'un bâtiment, avec pour double objectif de respecter les coûts (de construction et d'usage) et d'améliorer la performance énergétique du projet (réglementaire et consommations). Respectant le contexte multicritère et multi-acteurs propre à tout projet d'architecture, un outil interactif a été développé, qui propose, aux acteurs d'un projet, de définir le projet qu'ils souhaitent en répondant à un questionnaire et/ou en dessinant l'esquisse, à main levée. Une procédure d'optimisation utilisant un algorithme génétique permet également de déterminer : pour un seul acteur, le projet optimal, défini par la combinaison de paramètres, qui présente des performances lui offrant la meilleure satisfaction possible ; pour un ensemble d'acteurs, le meilleur compromis entre les scénarios spécifiés, résultant de la combinaison des valeurs de paramètres, qui, à la fois, maximise les performances du projet, et donne, à tous les acteurs, la plus égale et la plus grande satisfaction possible. In the conception of the building envelope, the sketch design is a crucial moment of the architectural design. The first drawing gives a concrete expression to the project author's first choices regarding a set of requirements and preferences, as expressed by the multiple stakeholders of the project, namely: the building owner, users, public authorities and the design team surrounding the architect. The present study explores a Multiple Criteria Decision Aid procedure (MCDA), an aid to help stakeholders improve this stage of the sketch design. The methodology is built close to the usual design process. This paper presents design and decision aid intertwined procedures and briefly describes the softwares involved: AMCE and EsQUIsE. The decision aid process is a first attempt to address this architectural sketch design challenge. The reader is expected to react to the suggested presentation of this still open MCDA problem. Some facts and some figures, first of all. Wallonia must import 98% of its energy resources. The fossile fuel reserves are limited: one speaks 200 years for coal, 60 years for gas and uranium, 40 years for oil. And yet, our energy demand increases irremediably. Moreover, it takes part, for 85%, with our emissions of CO2, emissions which are largely responsible for the climate warming of planet. That is to decrease the dependancy of Wallonia, to save our invaluable natural resources of energy or to limit as much as possible climate warming, we are in the obligation to strongly reduce our consumption of energy. In 10 years, we must raise the challenge to obtain at least 20% of reduction in industry, 10% in the tertiary sector, and 10% in the residential one. Vis-a-vis these challenges, it is necessary for us, as of now, to engage deep changes and to start a true technological revolution in all the branches of industry consuming energy: in the industrial production and transport, in the tertiary sector, but more especially the residential one. For this reason, the design of our buildings has a considerable role to play. To change practices in and for its house will amplify the awakening of the greatest number of citizens. The booklet that you have between the hands addresses particularly to the architects, to the contractors, to the craftsmen of the building, to the teachers of the schools of architecture and the techniques of the building, with all those who are the originators and the realizers of creations and the restorations of private and public buildings. To reduce the consumption of energy for the heating of a building requires tools and techniques, specific and in constant improvement. In respect of the multicriteria and multiactors context of any building project, an interactive tool is being developed, which is using decision-making aids, in order to improve the architectural response to the client’s and regulations requirements, while aiding; - the client: in the expression of his requirements and in his participation to the multiple partners negotiation; - the project authors: in their elaboration of the parametric and graphic forces of the architectural project, they can develop in accordance with the actors’ objectives. The main objective of the present study is to introduce a rational method of aiding to design the envelope of a building, during the sketch design. The design method has for both objectives the respect of building costs (for the construction itself and in use), and the improvement of the energy performance. In the multicriteria and multiactors context, this interactive tool is using decision-making aids, in order to improve the architectural response to the client’s and regulations requirements, while aiding: - the project authors in their conception tasks, by making up the project architectural forces, in accordance with the actors’ objectives; - and the client in his participation in the multiple partners negotiation. In the conception of the envelope of a building, the sketch design is a crucial moment of the design. The first drawing gives a concrete expression to the first choices of the project author, in respect of a set of requirements and of general preferences, expressed by the multiple stakeholders of the project, namely: the building owner, the users, the adminstrative authorities and the design team surrounding the architect. In order to help the stakeholders in improving this stage of the sketch design, the present study explores a multicriteria decision aiding procedure. This MultiCriteria Decision Aid (MCDA) methodology should be close to the usual design process. This paper presents the design and the decision aid procedures, in parallel. At this time of the study, the decision aid process is a first attempt to cope with this architectural design challenge. The floor is expected to react to the suggested presentation of this MCDA open problem. [less ▲]
