Introduction Patellar tendinopathy (PT) is commonly observed in jumping sports. Even if its biomechanic is somewhat explored, no information is known about the muscle strength profile of these patients. We aimed to determine if there exists a specific profile of patients suffering from a PT Methods 43 patients (42 males; 29 y.o +/- 9.8 y.o) suffering from PT were recruited. To be eligible, the patients must not have suffered from any other traumatic or micro-traumatic injury than the PT on the pathologic limb. After a physical examination, the tendon damage was assessed by ultrasounds examination. The patients were then tested on an isokinetic dynamometer and the peak torque per unit of mass (PTm) developed by the quadriceps and the hamstrings were recorded for various testing modalities. After each test, a visual analog scale (VAS) was used to estimate the pain felt by the patients. Results No significant correlation was found between the MTm and the demographic variables. The difference in MTm between the healthy and the pathological limbs was significant only in concentric 60°/s, for both the quadriceps and the hamstrings. Lastly, the VAS score showed that the most intense pain was experienced after the eccentric test. Conclusions There is no specific patient strength profile emerging from the isokinetic test. This stresses the importance for the clinicians to make testing and to apply a personalized treatment to each patient. On the other hand, the isokinetic eccentric testing of the quadriceps could be used to induce a mechanical stress on the tendon for a reliable pain assessment. [less ▲]

OBJECTIVE: To assess the influence of age on pulmonary hemodynamics and hemorheological properties in healthy dogs. ANIMALS: 14 healthy Beagles. PROCEDURES: Dogs were placed in 2 age groups as follows: young dogs (<or= 5 years old; n = 8) and old dogs (>or= 8 years old; 6). Hematologic characteristics, plasma total protein and fibrinogen concentrations, and blood viscosity were measured. Systolic time intervals of pulmonary blood flow were recorded by pulsed-wave Doppler echocardiography. Early (E') and late (A') diastolic myocardial velocities, isovolumic contraction velocity, and systolic myocardial velocity of the free tricuspid annulus were recorded by pulsed-wave tissue Doppler imaging (TDI). Dogs were anesthetized and pulmonary arterial pressures (PAP) and cardiac output were recorded with a pediatric thermodilution Swan-Ganz catheter. RESULTS: Hemorheological measurements were not different between the 2 groups. Systolic, mean, and diastolic PAP were higher in old dogs, compared with values in young dogs; this difference was attributed to a high pulmonary vascular resistance and low arterial compliance in old dogs. Systolic time intervals of pulmonary blood flow stayed unchanged. The A' wave of the free tricuspid annulus was increased in old, compared with that young dogs, and the E':A' ratio was decreased. Pulmonary vascular resistance was inversely correlated with compliance. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The age of dogs should be taken into account when interpreting pulmonary hemodynamic results and TDI variables of right ventricular diastolic function. [less ▲]

The objective of this study was to establish a reference base for respiratory variables (respiratory rate [R(R)], inspiratory and expiratory time [T(i) and T(e)], peak inspiratory and expiratory pseudoflow [PIF and PEF], tidal volume [V(T)], minute ventilation [V(E)] and enhanced pause [Penh]) of healthy cats by use of barometric whole body plethysmography (BWBP). Eighteen healthy European cats (10 male, 8 female) were studied from the age of 3 to 13 months in order to assess growth- and gender-related changes of BWBP variables. Chest radiographs and bronchoalveolar lavage cytology were performed to confirm pulmonary health status. Diurnal changes were investigated every 2 h over a period of 24 h when the cats were adult. V(T), V(E), PIF and PEF significantly increased during somatic growth and were higher in males than in females, whereas R(R), T(i), T(e), T(e)/T(i) ratio, PEF/PIF ratio and Penh remained unchanged and were not affected by gender. When measured over 24 h, Penh, T(e) and T(i) were significantly increased in the early morning hours (04:00 h), whereas R(R), PIF and PEF were decreased at that time. This study provides reference values of BWBP variables for healthy male and female cats and indicates when circadian changes might be observed [less ▲]
