This study aimed at comparing data obtained from Azawak zebu colostrum with literature data. The comparison was performed by a meta-analytical approach. Colostrum samples were hand-collected after 5 h from 7 Azawak cows at calving between August 27, to September 10, 2009 in the Sahel. For data from literature, twenty one (21) references were identified in the following analytical databases: PubMed, Science Direct, Google scholar, Collection from University of Liege. The references were selected according to the following two criteria: i) only studies reported on bovine colostrum were used irrespective of breeds, and ii) among the selected studies, those not providing complete information to allow meta-analytical calculation were excluded. Samples were analyzed for immunoglobulins (IgG, IgM, IgA), lactoferrin, and chemical composition (dry mater, protein, fat, lactose, ash, Ca, P, NA, K, Mg). The mean levels of IgG, IgM, dry matter, protein and fat for Azawak cows were lower (P ˂ 0.001) than those obtained in other breeds; however colostrum from the Azawak was higher in IgA but the difference was not significant. For lactose and ash, mean values for Azawak cows were higher (P ˂ 0.001) than those from the literature. Contents of Ca, P, Na and Mg in Azawak bovine colostrum were significantly higher (P ˂ 0.001) than the mean levels in form the literature data. In conclusion, the colostrum from Azawak cows appears to be lower in most immunoglobulins, in fat and in protein than the values reported in the literature, but higher in lactose and minerals. This could be an adaptation to sahelian contraints. [less ▲]

Background: This paper describes the isolation and characterization of pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAG) from fetal cotyledonary tissue (FCT) and maternal caruncular tissue (MCT) collected from fallow deer (Dama dama) pregnant females. Proteins issued from FCT and MCT were submitted to affinity chromatographies by using Vicia villosa agarose (VVA) or anti-bovine PAG-2 (R#438) coupled to Sepharose 4B gel. Finally, they were characterized by SDSPAGE and N-terminal microsequencing. Results: Four distinct fallow deer PAG (fdPAG) sequences were identified and submitted to Swiss-Prot database. Comparison of fdPAG with PAG sequences identified in other ruminant species exhibited 64 to 83% identity. Additionally, alpha-fetoprotein was identified in fetal and maternal tissues. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate the efficacy of VVA and bovine PAG-2 affinity chromatographies for the isolation of PAG molecules expressed in deer placenta. This is the first report giving four specific amino acid sequences of PAG isolated from feto-maternal junction (FCT and MCT) in the Cervidae family. [less ▲]

The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of frozen Azawak colostrum supplementation on body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), reproductive parameters (mean age at first parturition, fertility, fecundity, prolificacy) and mortality rate among red kids. The study was conducted at the goat farm secondary centre of Maradi in Niger from September 2010 to September 2011. The control animals (n = 20) were left with their mother, while the treatment animals (n = 20) received in addition 50 ml/animal/day of bovine colostrum at birth and 15 ml/animal/day from d2 to d15. Weight was measured weekly from birth to d365. Mortalities were also recorded over the same period. For reproductive parameters, observations began at weaning (d197). Growth rate was higher (p < 0.001) in supplemented animal, and the treatment effects on ADG were observed up to 150 day after the end of supplementation. A similar long-lasting trend was also observed in relation to the mortality rate (25% for ColG vs. 55% for ConG; p = 0.05). The age at first kidding tended to be lower in the treated group (13.8 0.7 vs. 14.1 0.8 month; p < 0.1). In conclusion, mild bovine colostrum supplementation induces a long-lasting positive impact on growth rate and to a lower extent on reproduction parameters and survival rate. [less ▲]

This study evaluated the effect of colostrum from Azawak cows on plasma protein profile, 24 growth, and survival in Red kids from Niger. Forty (40) newborn kids were allocated to one 25 of two treatment-groups: control (free access to water and the mother) and colostrum (free 26 access to water and the mother, but with additional 50 mL of colostrum/animal/day of birth 27 and 25 mL/animal/day from the 2nd to 15th day of age). Blood samples were collected into 28 EDTA vacutainer tubes by jugular puncture at 10 and 30 days of age. Total protein was 29 quantified by the Biuret method. The agarose gel electrophoresis was used to determine the 30 serum levels of albumin, -globulin, β1-globulin, β2-globulin, γ-globulin and the 31 albumin/globulin ratio. The animals from the colostrum group showed higher body weight 32 and average daily gain when compared to the control group (P < 0.001). The average 33 concentration in protein at the both sampling times reached higher values in the colostrum 34 than in the control group. At D10, the colostrum group tended (P < 0.07) to show higher 35 levels of -globulin and had higher values (P < 0.05) for β1-globulin. At D30, total protein 36 and β2-globulins were higher in colostrum group. Colostrum from Azawak cows seems to 37 have positive effects on some plasma proteins levels and on growth rate in Red kids. BACKGROUND: Pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAGs) were first described as placental antigens present in the blood serum of the mother soon after implantation. Here, we describe the purification of several pregnancy-associated glycoproteins from water buffalo placenta (wbPAGs). A specific radioimmunoassay (RIA) was developed for early pregnancy diagnosis in buffalo species. RESULTS: Amino-terminal microsequencing of immunoreactive placental proteins allowed the identification of eleven wbPAGs sequences [Swiss-Prot accession numbers: P86369 to P86379]. Three polyclonal antisera (AS#858, AS#859 and AS#860) were raised in rabbits against distinct wbPAG fractions. A new RIA (RIA-860) was developed and used to distinguish between pregnant (n = 33) and non-pregnant (n = 26) water buffalo females. CONCLUSIONS: Our results confirmed the multiplicity of PAG expression in buffalo placenta. In addition, the RIA-860 system was shown to be sensitive, linear, reproducible, accurate and specific in measuring PAG concentrations in buffalo plasma samples from Day 37 of gestation onwards. This study evaluated the impact of heterologous Azawak colostrum administration on plasma protein profile in red kids from Niger. Forty (40) newborn kids were affected to one of two treatments: control group (access to water and the mother) and colostrum group (access to the mother, water and additional 50 ml of colostrum Azawak/animal the day of birth, then 25ml/animal/day from the 2nd to 15th day). Blood samples (10ml/animal) were obtained at the age of 10 and 30 days by jugular puncture into EDTA vacutainer tubes. The quantification of total protein was performed by the Biuret method. The agarose gel electrophoresis was used to determine serum levels of albumin, ɑ-globulin, β1-globulin, β2-globulin, γ-globulin and finally the albumin/globulin ratio. In general, the average concentrations of these proteins obtained at both ages reached higher values in colostrum than in control group. At day 10, the colostrum group tended to show (P <0.07) higher levels for ɑ-globulin and showed higher values (P <0.04) for β1-globulin. At day 30, total protein and β2-globulins were higher in colostrum group. The administration of heterologous colostrum in kid seems to have positive effects on some plasma parameters. It would be worth to discriminate the plasma proteins derived from bovine and maternal colostra. [less ▲]

In most mammals, the ingestion of colostrum is essential to the survival of the newborn. The main objective of this work is to synthesize data from studies on colostrum, especially on the physiology of its production and its chemical composition. The sequence of events leading to the production of colostrum is identical in all species. However, the duration of these phases varies. Colostrum is rich in immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, IgM, IgE and IgD), nutrients (proteins, lipids, lactose, minerals), hormones and growth factors (prolactin, insulin, estrogens, IgF), immune cells (leukocytes cells, epithelial cells), vitamins (carotene, vitamin E) and finally in enzymes such as lactoperoxidase and alkaline phosphatase. Its composition is dependent on many factors that can be divided into intrinsic ones, related to the animal, and extrinsic or environmental ones. Colostrum contains all the elements necessary to not only protection against attacks of pathogens but also to rapid growth of young animals. [less ▲]

The objective of the present work was to describe the cyclicity of Ouled Djellal ewes born one year before regarding their live weight and body condition score, during the autumn season. The study has been driven in the region of Guelma, East of Algeria, on 104 ewes belonging to two farms. At the beginning of the study, ewes from farms A and B had similar ages but differed in live weight and body condition scores. The concentration of progesterone wasdetermined by radioimmunoassay. The level of spontaneous cyclicity, as well as the plasmatic level of the progesterone, were influenced significantly by both live weight and body condition score (P<0.0001). If the first was in favor of ewes with high body weight and body condition score, the second seemed to be higher in slim cyclic ewes. The body fatness appears to influence positively the age of puberty. [less ▲]

In many songbirds species, wherein we can find the domestic canary (Serinus canaria), singing is generally produced either to defend a territory or to attract a mate. The Song Control System is a neural specialization, mostly located in telencephalic regions of the brain and associated to the control of song learning, perception and production. External factors such as testosterone (T), photoperiod and social cues have been described to modulate singing behaviour. Parallel to the song behaviour, some of the song control system nuclei (HVC, RA and Area X) demonstrate a puzzling amount of seasonal plasticity. Their volumes varies seasonally based on changes in cell spacing, neuropile size, dendritic arborisation and in the case on the nidopallial nucleus HVC on the incorporation of newborn neurons. We present here a review of this curious phenomenon of adult neuroplasticity associated to a complex behaviour, which doesn’t occur as far as we know in the mammalian adult brain [less ▲]

In goat and sheep, the glycoproteins associated to pregnancy (PAG) are little studied. Their study in these species is very important in the evaluation of prediction of early pregnancy. Even though numerous research has been done in order to investigate the physiological functions of placental proteins, the exact biofunction of the glycoproteins associated to pregnancy is still unknown. The objective of research was the study of the dynamics of PAG in goats and ewes in the first part of pregnancy(1-35 days after mating) and the determination of correlations with the reproductive status of females and to earlier the pregnancy.The experiment was realized on 49 Saanen x Carpatina goats and 72 Merinos of Palas sheep from the biostation of the Research and Development Institute for Goat and Sheep, Palas Constanta. The females in normal reproduction season were monitored for the detection of estrus and mated naturally. The blood was collected by puncture of the jugular vein on days 0, 7, 14, 25 and 35 after mating (day 0). The serum was obtained after centrifuging at 1500 x g for 15 minutes and stored at -20oC till the RIA determination. The RIA of the plasma with the purpose of detecting the concentration of proteins specific to pregnancy was realized in two experimental series in February and December 2008, at the Laboratory for Reproduction Physiology – The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Liege, Belgium. The RIA dosing was realized after the application of the method with the preincubation of the serums to test with specific serum (Atg°) and then with the marked antigen (Atg*), considering the high sensitivity of this method to detect the smallest values of PAG from day 0 to day 35 after mating. The diagnosis of the pregnancy state was based on the principle of PAG antibodies binding to the specific antigen, establishing through RIA the quantity of free antigen. Non-pregnancy involves the attachment of the antigen marked by non-specific antibodies. The preliminary results have demonstrated that the sheep PAG were had values ranging between 4.197-15.985 ng/ml and 0.01-3.39 ng/ml in nonpregnant ewes. In the pregnant goats, the PAG concentrations ranged between 16.75±3.44-27.17±2.95 ng/ml, while in the nonpregnant goats, the PAG values were 1.38±0.35 – 2.03±0.51 6 ng/ml. The purpose of the experiments was to find one accurate method for early pregnancy diagnosis in goat and sheep. The conclusion was that ovine pregnancy can be reliably diagnosed on Day 25 after AI and goat pregnancy on Day 30, by using a heterologous radioimmunoassay of PAG. [less ▲]
