The goal of this research is to propose an integrated approach to incorporate structural engineering concerns into architectural schematic designs for timely and well-informed decision making. This is done through a platform that is based on two software prototypes, EsQUIsE for capturing and interpreting architectural sketches, and StAr for assisting engineers during conceptual structural design. An integrated information model is provided for communication. Given the dissimilar “quality” of the information managed by both prototypes, sketch interpretation mechanisms are also required to “tune-up” communications for bringing the sketch to a precise structural engineering definition. As a result, the engineer can propose feasible structural systems earlier than usual. [less ▲]

Recently, statistical and empirical signal processing techniques such as the proper orthogonal decomposition and the Hilbert-Huang transform have shown promise for structural system identification. In the present study, experimental modal analysis is carried out by employing blind source separation techniques and by interpreting the response of a mechanical system as a static mixture of sources. Specifically, it is shown under which circumstances the normal coordinates of the vibration modes may be interpreted as virtual sources. The advantages and limitations of the proposed method will be discussed, and the procedure will be demonstrated using numerical applications. [less ▲]

The presence of limit cycle oscillations within the flight envelopes of existing aircraft is well documented. Future air vehicle designs are also likely to encounter limit cycle oscillations under certain loading conditions. These steady-state constant amplitude oscillations are detrimental to mission effectiveness and lead to increased fatigue of aircraft structures. Previous efforts to suppress limit cycle oscillations have focused primarily on active control methods. These efforts have been effective but require significant measurement and control resources. In this study the investigators test a passive method for suppressing limit cycle behavior. A nonlinear energy sink, based on the principle of nonlinear energy pumping, is shown to be effective for increasing the stability threshold of a nonlinear two degree of freedom aeroelastic system. The Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) has been shown to be effective for characterizing a wide range of nonstationary signals in terms of elemental components through what has been called the empirical mode decomposition. The HHT has been utilized extensively despite the absence of a serious analytical foundation, as it provides a concise basis for the analysis of strongly nonlinear systems. In this paper, we attempt to provide the missing link, showing the relationship between the EMD and the slow-flow equations of the system. The slow-flow model is established by performing a partition between slow and fast dynamics using the complexification-averaging technique, and a dynamical system described by slowly-varying amplitudes and phases is obtained. These variables can also be extracted directly from the experimental measurements using the Hilbert transform coupled with the EMD. The comparison between the experimental and analytical results forms the basis of a nonlinear system identification method, termed the slow-flow model identification method, which is demonstrated using numerical examples. When resorting to numerical algorithms, we show that nonlinear normal mode (NNM) computation is possible with limited implementation effort, which paves the way to a practical method for determining the NNMs of nonlinear mechanical systems. The proposed method relies on two main techniques, namely a shooting procedure and a method for the continuation of NNM motions. In addition, sensitivity analysis is used to reduce the computational burden of the algorithm. A simplified discrete model of a nonlinear bladed disk is considered to demonstrate the developments. The Hilbert transform is one of the most successful approaches to tracking the varying nature of vibration of a large class of nonlinear systems thanks to the extraction of backbone curves from experimental data. Because signals with multiple frequency components do not admit a well-behaved Hilbert transform, it is inherently limited to the analysis of single-degree-of-freedom systems. In this study, the joint application of the complexification-averaging method and the empirical mode decomposition enables us to develop a new technique, the slow-flow model identification method. Through numerical and experimental applications, we demonstrate that the proposed method is adequate for characterizing and identifying multi-degree-offreedom nonlinear systems. [less ▲]

Références [1] Croisier et al. Multifactor Dimensionality Reduction (MDR) was originally developed to detect gene-gene interactions in the domain of human genetics. MDR algorithm collapses high-dimensional genetic data, into a single dimension thus permitting interactions to be detected in relatively small sample sizes. To deal with the large volume of data, we demonstrate the experiment of MDR software which was written in Java programming language and compare with native method. We focus on execution time, memory usage and CPU usage and describe the results. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

The following organisms were used in this study: Bacillus megatherium, B.subtilus, B.circulans, activated sludge from industrial w. w. teratment plant and a mixed enriched culture of flocculating bacteria. It was find out that the microbial effect towards the dyes was quite specific and the extent of colour removal varied in broad range. Very good results were achieved also by means of permeable reactive barriers inhabitated by flocculating bacteria and other independent microorganisms and operating under continuous flow conditions. The colour removal in these case varied in the range of about 80 - 90 % and was similar to that achieved by the well known chemical reagents used in the textile industry. [less ▲]

In May 2006 comet 73P/SW3 passed at less than 0.1 AU from Earth providing us an unique opportunity for high spatial resolution study of its coma. This event was expected to be particularly interesting because the comet had broken apart in 3-4 fragments in 1996. The 2006 apparition has been even more interesting because the fragments produced in 1996, when approaching the Sun, were continuously breaking apart. This process resulted in many small sub-fragments and in the injection in the coma of fresh material, coming from the interior of the nuclei, giving the possibility to study this uncontaminated material. The breaking fragments have been observed at ESO in the visible and near-IR with the aim of analyzing this fresh solid component of the coma in search of possible presence of organic solids. In the presentation we will report preliminary results of this campaign. [less ▲]

Multiple cameras and collaboration between them make possible the integration of information available from multiple views and reduce the uncertainty due to occlusions. This paper presents a novel method for integrating and tracking multi-view observations using bidirectional belief propagation. The method is based on a fully connected graphical model where target states at different views are represented as different but correlated random variables, and image observations at a given view are only associated with the target states at the same view. The tracking processes at different views collaborate with each other by exchanging information using a message passing scheme, which largely avoids propagating wrong information. An efficient sequential belief propagation algorithm is adopted to perform the collaboration and to infer the multi-view target states. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method on video-surveillance sequences. [less ▲]

A discontinuous Galerkin framework for large deformations of solids is established. The method is based on a general Hu-Washizu-de Veubeke functional allowing for displacement and stress discontinuities in the domain interior. The focus of this paper is on the treatment of large elasto-plastic deformations. The method is shown to possess the required numerical properties: consistency in the non-linear range and linearized stability. In order to demonstrate the versatility, accuracy and robustness of the method examples of application and convergence studies in three dimensions are provided. Further developments of the method will lead to applications where physical discontinuities must be modeled like fragmentation or failure. [less ▲]

In this work, we demonstrate the feasibility of fully-Lagrangian finite element simulations of the mechanics of three-dimensional penetration environments. The key enabling component is a robust library informed with state-of-the-art algorithms for mesh healing and optimization, which is repeatedly used during the simulations to eliminate deformation-induced mesh distortion and to maintain the quality of the numerical solution. The computational strategy effectively avoids the need to resort to artifacts such as element deletion or conversion to meshless particles which have been proposed to eliminate the issue of mesh distortion. The effectiveness of the computational strategy is demonstrated in a simulation of deep oblique penetration of a spherical-nosed steel rod on an aluminum target. [less ▲]

This paper deals with the “Web 2.0”, where every user can contribute to the content, “harnessing collective intelligence”. After studying what makes the success of services like Google Base, Del.icio.us and the Open Directory Project, we propose a unifying “REST” protocol for this kind of community-driven organizations of knowledge. The aim is to make the collaboration possible beyond the boundaries of the software and of the resulting communities. [less ▲]
