In this paper we study the Christian symbols, as the cross (), the staurogramm (⳨, and its variant with an appendage ), the chi-rho sign (⳩), and the crux ansata (☥) in Greek literary and documentary papyri. The first part is dedicated to the study of the form and the origin of the Christian symbols, on the ground of both the oldest papyri which bear them and the literary sources about them. In the second part we analyze their disposition in the papyri and in relation to the texts they bear. Finally, in the third part, the data studied before lead to identifying the functions of the Christian symbols in the papyri. [less ▲]

Located in the 'inner periphery' of Neapolitan historic center, at the foot of Capodimonte Park, historically the urban fabric of San Carlo Arena district eastern area has developed around two architectural complexes: Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria degli Angeli alle Croci, for a long time aggregation places for local people. In addition, the ‘lava dei Vergini’ phenomenon, which periodically flooded the area outside the ancient city walls and the ‘for a via’ street (Via Foria), created optimal conditions for tuff extraction, used for local construction. In the past, physical features, such as the irregularity of the hilly area modeled by natural agents, the presence of several underground quarries, the grandeur of remarkable architectural presence, the numerous alleys in a heavily layered historical fabric, and the peculiarities of the social life that took place beyond Foria, have been a source of inspiration for several and also internationally renowned artists. The original identity of the ancient outer suburb, born from progressive expansions of the neighboring villages outside the city walls, is still marked. The closing elements that caracterize the architecture - in particular building fronts -, reflect its inhabitants attitudes and daily life. In this historic urban landscape 'shred’, this closure - despite the direct proximity to the adjacent old town and several, but not easily accessible, panoramic views of part of Naples Bay - continues to be one of the main identifying characters of the area. Although, for many centuries, this has allowed the 'spirit of places’ conservation, it has been transformed into a voluntary closure against the legality, which led to today serious state of neglect and social decay. Sometimes it is possible to find an excessive and illegal man-soil interaction, and unlawful activities influence and define some features of historical buildings in the area. However, for some years the local population has become aware of the existing problems by operating in a more concrete way, through different kinds of associations and volunteer that try to face the territory needs and emergencies. The goal is the elaboration of an update overview of the existing dynamics in this part of urban tissue and the identification of elements to take into account for possible enhancement perspectives in respect of an identity between invariant and processing factors. The publication of the book Nani in Festa. Iconografia, religione e politica in Ostia durante il secondo triumvirato (C. Bocherens ed., Edipuglia, 2012) was the occasion to highlight the exceptional decorative system of the “Domus aux Bucranes” and, especially, to put forward the frieze of dwarfs and its interpretation. With the discovery of these paintings, in the œcus, we have discovered a remarkable collection of stuccos, until today remains unpublished. This article gives a first description and an initial analysis of the fragments of stucco. Their placement on the wall and their relationship with pavements, frescoes and painted ceilings are studied, as well as the iconography they carrying, in close relation with the context of the domus, and, more generally, with Ostia in the late-republican period. This paper presents a novel search algorithm using time-domain simulations to identify plausible N-k contingencies endangering voltage stability. Starting from an initial list of disturbances, progressively more severe contingencies are investigated. After simulation of a N-k contingency, the simulation results are assessed. If the system response is unstable, a plausible harmful contingency sequence has been found. Otherwise, components affected by the contingencies are considered as candidate next event leading to N-(k+1) contingencies. This implicitly takes into account hidden failures of component protections. The performance of the proposed search algorithm is compared to a brute-force algorithm and demonstrated on the IEEE Nordic test system. [less ▲]

This paper deals with the derivation of a simplified model of a distribution network hosting dispersed photovoltaic units. The model is aimed at short-term dynamic simulations of a transmission grid in response to large disturbances. In a first step, a generic dynamic model of a photovoltaic unit is proposed, focusing on its interactions with the grid, in particular the controls triggered by voltage disturbances. The model takes into account various present and near-future grid codes. In a second step, a dynamic equivalent is derived accounting for the distribution network, the dispersed photovoltaic units, as well as static and dynamic (motor) loads. This equivalent is of the “grey-box” type and its parameters are tuned in the least-square sense to match the dynamic response of the original, unreduced system. Simulation results are reported on a detailed 913-bus distribution system subject to faults at transmission level. [less ▲]

According to Pausanias' Description of Greece, the sanctuary of Despoina at Lykosoura was created before the Trojan War and was already important at the time of the foundation of Megalopolis by synoecism in the first half of the fourth century B.C. However, the absence of any mention of Despoina or Lykosoura in written sources earlier than the third century as well as the archaeological evidence invite us to challenge this alleged antiquity. This paper rather ventures the hypothesis that Despoina was a cult figure created by Megalopolis and that her sanctuary was given a pan-Arcadian flavour by the importation of cults and traditions that already existed in other cities. [less ▲]

Validated extraction of gait sub-phase durations using an ambulatory accelerometer-based system is a current unmet need to quantify subtle changes during the walking of older adults. In this paper, we describe (1) a signal processing algorithm to automatically extract not only durations of stride, stance, swing, and double support phases, but also durations of sub-phases that refine the stance and swing phases from foot-worn accelerometer signals in comfortable walking of older adults, and (2) the validation of this extraction using reference data provided by a gold standard system. The results show that we achieve a high agreement between our method and the reference method in the extraction of (1) the temporal gait events involved in the estimation of the phase/sub-phase durations, namely heel strike (HS), toe strike (TS), toe-off (TO), maximum of heel clearance (MHC), and maximum of toe clearance (MTC), with an accuracy and precision that range from ‒3.6 ms to 4.0 ms, and 6.5 ms to 12.0 ms, respectively, and (2) the gait phase/sub-phase durations, namely stride, stance, swing, double support phases, and HS to TS, TO to MHC, MHC to MTC, and MTC to HS sub-phases, with an accuracy and precision that range from ‒4 ms to 5 ms, and 9 ms to 15 ms, respectively, in comfortable walking of a thirty-eight older adults ( (mean ± standard deviation) 71.0 ± 4.1 years old). This demonstrates that the developed accelerometer-based algorithm can extract validated temporal gait events and phase/sub-phase durations, in comfortable walking of older adults, with a promising degree of accuracy/precision compared to reference data, warranting further studies.

[less ▲]

Adaptive facades are performance based envelopes that are able to respond dynamically to climatic conditions. One of the recognized adaptive façade technologies is electrochromic glazing. However, very few studies evaluated the performance of electrochromic glazing on the building level. Therefore, we selected a case study of a certified educational building with a nearly zero energy building performance that includes an electrochromic facade. The overall aim of the research is to understand the performance requirements of electrochromic glazing and its overall contribution to energy saving s and thermal and visual comfort improvement. The performance of the Swiss International School in Dubai was analyzed based on interviews with the design and build team, monitored data and post occupancy evaluation. A systematic process mapping took place to review the performance indicators, simulation tools and team responsibilities during the design, construction and operation stages of the building. The paper identifies the key performance criteria of electrochromic glazing in relation to energy and comfort. Finally, we assess the significance of using electrochromic glazing from a technical point of view and share the learned lessons for architects and facade engineers [less ▲]

This paper investigates the performance of a Bayesian model updating approach using nonlinear normal modes (NNMs). The proposed approach is applied to a wing-engine structure tested in the laboratory. The structure response to a broadband input excitation is measured experimentally. The structure NNMs are then extracted from the measured data by combining a frequency-domain nonlinear subspace identification method with numerical continuation technique. An initial finite element model of the wing-engine structure is built in Matlab and its linear stiffness parameters and the coefficients of the local nonlinearities are selected as the updating parameters. The joint posterior probability distribution of the model parameters is estimated based on their prior distribution and the likelihood function which is defined as a Gaussian distribution of error function. The error function in this study is defined as the difference between model-predicted and identified NNMs at different energy levels. The calibrated model is then used to predict the structure response (NNMs and time history), taking into account model parameters uncertainties and modeling errors. The model predictions are compared with a set of experimental results that were not used in the calibration process and only considered for validation purpose. [less ▲]

Though it is a crucial step for most identification methods in nonlinear structural dynamics, nonlinearity location is a sparsely addressed topic in the literature. In fact, locating nonlinearities in mechanical systems turns out to be a challenging problem when treated nonparametrically, that is, without fitting a model. The present contribution takes a new look at this problem by exploiting some recent developments in the identification of dynamic networks, originating from the systems and control community. Nonlinear system identification has become of great interest during the last decades. However, a common and shared framework is not present yet, and the identification may be challenging, especially when real engineering structures are considered with strong nonlinearities. Subspace methods have proved to be effective when dealing with local nonlinearities, both in time domain (TNSI method) and in frequency domain (FNSI method). This study reports an improvement for both methods, as a first attempt to account for distributed nonlinearities, which is still an open question in the research community. A numerical beam under moderately large oscillations that exhibits geometric nonlinearity is considered. The object of the identification process is to exploit its behavior through the correct identification of the parameters that define the nonlinearity. Results show a high level of confidence between the two methods, and suggest that a more complete analysis of distributed nonlinear phenomena can be conducted based on these approaches. [less ▲]

Two approaches for experimental identification of the nonlinear dynamical characteristics of jointed structures are investigated, (a) Nonlinear Modal Testing, (b) State-Space Model Identification. Both require only minimal a priori knowledge of the specimen. For method (a), the definition of nonlinear modes as periodic motions is used, in its generalized formulation recently proposed for nonconservative systems. The theoretically required negative damping compensating the frictional dissipation is experimentally realized by properly controlled excitation. This permits the extraction of modal frequencies, damping ratios and vibrational deflection shapes as a function of the vibration level. For method (b), a state-space model with multivariate polynomial nonlinear terms is identified from the vibration response to a properly designed excitation signal. Both methods are applied to a structure with bolted joints. The quality of the extracted modal and state-space models, respectively, is assessed by comparing model-based predictions of the forced vibration response to reference measurements. [less ▲]

Piccolo tubes are parts of aircraft wings anti-icing system and consist of titanium pipes inserted into the internal structure of the slat. Due to differential thermal expansion, clearances between the tube and its support are unavoidable and cause the overall system to exhibit highly nonlinear behavior, resulting from impacts and friction. This paper addresses the identi cation and modeling of the nonlinearities present in the slat-Piccolo tube connection. The complete identi cation procedure, from nonlinearity detection and characterization to parameter estimation, is carried out based upon sine-sweep measurements. The use of several techniques, such as the acceleration surface method, enables to understand the complex dynamics of the Piccolo tube and build a reliable model of its nonlinearities. In particular, the parameters of nonsmooth nonlinear stiffness and damping mechanisms are estimated. The nonlinear model is finally validated on standard quali cation tests for airborne equipments. The nearby young star beta Pictoris is surrounded by the archetypal debris disc, which provides a unique window on the formation and early evolution of terrestrial planets. While the outer disc has been extensively studied since its discovery in 1984, very little is currently known about the inner planetary system (<4AU). Recently, accurate squared visibilities obtained with VLTI/PIONIER revealed the presence of resolved circumstellar emission with an integrated brightness amounting to approximately 1.4% of the stellar brightness in H band. However, it is not clear whether this excess emission originates from thermal emission, reflected light from hot dust grains located in the innermost regions of the planetary system, or is simply due to forward scattering by dust grains located further away (but still within the PIONIER field-of-view, i.e., close to the line of sight). In this paper, we present medium-resolution K-band observations of beta Pic obtained with VLTI/GRAVITY during science verification. The goals of these observations are to better constrain the temperature of the grains (and hence their location and chemical composition) and to showcase the high-precision capabilities of GRAVITY at detecting faint, close-in circumstellar emission. In studies on root systems using the soil coring method, roots, crop residues and soil particles extracted after washing of soil samples need to be manually sorted before root quantification. If different species are present in the sample, their discrimination is based on several criteria. In order to reduce the complexity and the time needed for this tedious sorting step, near infrared hyperspectral imaging was used to discriminate all these elements. Images of washed and dried samples were acquired with a camera saving, for each pixel, a near infrared spectrum. These spectra are linked to the physicochemical nature of the elements visible on the hyperspectral images and were analyzed with discriminant algorithms allowing their discrimination and to link each pixel spectrum to the nature of the elements. According to the number of pixels classified as roots and thanks to the linear relationship between the number of pixels and the root biomass in the sample, it was possible to quantify roots in soil samples without manual sorting and weighing. This methodology was successfully tested on winter wheat roots and highlighted the tillage effect on root system development. It was also tested on wheat-pea intercropping in order to quantify separately the roots of each species. [less ▲]

This paper presents an analytical framework for classifying information systems developed for applications in the cultural heritage field. These can be numerous and quite different from one another, depending for the purpose they were developed for. In order to assess if one of the already existing systems can be used or modified to fit our research goals, a list of requirements was established. Starting from those, categories were defined and the information systems are then compared and evaluated based on those characteristics. This analytical framework is an important step in our research since using a tool that is not appropriate for the study object will not be able to provide valuable information to answer the main research questions. Introduction Establishing the effectivenss of speech-therapy interventions is a critical issue. Methodological approaches fitted for single-case studies, such as observation baselines, have been used for a long time in interventions addressing oral language or learning impairments. However, when targeting disabled populations, measuring the intervention efficacy is much harder, especially due to their ecological and functional aspects. Objective This work illustrates the efficacy assessment of an intervention based on a technological tool of Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) – named Tiwouh – among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Method Four young participants with ASD have been trained on the Tiwouh AAC plate-form. Their communication behaviors have been evaluated during the activity of reading book with their parents, comparing trained and non-trained books, with or without the support of the AAC tool. Results Thanks to the different experimental conditions of the same task (reading book) implemented as baselines, specific intervention effects have been highlighted. Moreover, some participants actually generalized these benefits to untrained books. Such data will help identifying participants’ profile that can benefit the most from these interventions. Conclusion The present work suggests measuring the effectiveness of an intervention can be achieved regardless of the therapeutic objective, in various situations and with patients exhibiting heterogeneous language profile, by using functional and ecological measures close to the population needs. The worrying development of a scouring downstream of the Poses dam decided Voies Navigables de France to carry on tests on experimental and numerical hydraulic models in order to design a suitable protection solution. In a first step, the study enabled to identify the operation situations for which scouring risk was the most important. Second, a rip rap protection made of 3-6 t blocks on a length of 30 m downstream of the dam has proved to be able to resist the whole realistic flow solicitations. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Introduction The MOBAK-1 testing battery has been recently developed with the aim of assessing the locomotion and object-control abilities of first grade children. Previous researches have demonstrated the global interest of this testing battery (1,2). However, a critical analysis of children failures in the tests revealed that some failures were related to the misunderstanding of the instruction or to unsuitable criteria and not to children inability (2). Moreover, the discrimination of the scoring system was also questioned. The aim of the study is to improve criteria in order to avoid the failure that are not related to children ability and to compare the actual dichotomous scoring system with another scoring system taking in consideration the progression of the children. Methods The MOBAK-1 testing battery will be addressed to 30 first grade children. Criteria for each test will be adapted according to previous observations (2) and will include familiarization with the task and additional trial when it is clear that the failure is not due to children ability. All the children will be assessed at the same time with the actual dichotomous scoring system and with an original scoring system that takes the children level of development into account. Results We hypothesized that the adaptation of the criteria will improve the testing battery discrimination. We also expected that the scoring system based on children progression will be more accurate but will be more difficult to be used by unexperienced teachers. Conclusion According to the results of the study, concrete improvements will be addressed to the researchers who work on MOBAK testing battery development. References 1. Recent spectropolarimetric surveys of bright, hot stars have found that ~10% of OB-type stars contain strong (mostly dipolar) surface magnetic fields (~kG). The prominent paradigm describing the interaction between the stellar winds and the surface magnetic field is the magnetically confined wind shock (MCWS) model. In this model, the stellar wind plasma is forced to move along the closed field loops of the magnetic field, colliding at the magnetic equator, and creating a shock. As the shocked material cools radiatively it will emit X-rays. Therefore, X-ray spectroscopy is a key tool in detecting and characterizing the hot wind material confined by the magnetic fields of these stars. Some B-type stars are found to have very short rotational periods. The effects of the rapid rotation on the X-ray production within the magnetosphere have yet to be explored in detail. The added centrifugal force due to rapid rotation is predicted to cause faster wind outflows along the field lines, leading to higher shock temperatures and harder X-rays. However, this is not observed in all rapidly rotating magnetic B-type stars. In order to address this from a theoretical point of view, we use the X-ray Analytical Dynamical Magnetosphere (XADM) model, originally developed for slow rotators, with an implementation of new rapid rotational physics. Using X-ray spectroscopy from ESA's XMM-Newton space telescope, we observed 5 rapidly rotating B-types stars to add to the previous list of observations. Comparing the observed X-ray luminosity and hardness ratio to that predicted by the XADM allows us to determine the role the added centrifugal force plays in the magnetospheric X-ray emission of these stars. Ten years later, an X-ray monitoring performed at high-resolution reveals the behaviour of the hottest magnetospheric plasma: it is located at ~ 2R [SUB]⊙[/SUB], hot but not extreme (log(T) ~ 7), producing unshifted lines, and displaying a very repetitive variability. Despite the massive adoption of HTTP adaptive streaming technology, buffering is still the most harmful event for QoE in video streaming. Previous studies have shown that buffering is not only detrimental for the overall user experience, but is also highly correlated to viewer engagement. The occurrence of buffering is particularly critical in cellular networks and mobile video deployments, as network conditions are less stable and network resources more limited. In this context, monitoring and properly predicting the QoE of video streaming services becomes paramount to cellular network operators, who need to offer high quality levels to reduce the risks of customers churning for quality dissatisfaction. In this paper, we present a novel approach to multi-dimensional QoE prediction in mobile video using machine learning models. Contrary to previous models for QoE prediction in video streaming, which are generally uni- or low-dimensional and model the impact of single video descriptors independently, we use a high-dimensional input space to model the impact of buffering and initial delay on QoE.We train and test the proposed models on a publicly available mobile video dataset, generated from subjective QoE tests with real viewers. Besides improving prediction performance, the proposed models show that there is a clear influence of other buffering pattern descriptors generally neglected in previous models - in particular those linked to the occurrence of the last stalling event, shedding light on new KPIs to monitor for better QoE assessment in video streaming. In order to study the variation of the hydraulic characteristics of ogee-crested weirs for upstream heads higher than the design head, several profiles have been tested on an experimental facility specifically designed and instrumented. These profiles have been defined regarding the real profiles of spillways of dams operated by EDF as well as the most used geometry of the literature. The experimental tests have been supplemented by numerical modeling, whose results were found to be very similar. The analysis shows that the discharge coefficient increases with the upstream head until head ratios around 5.5. This evolution follows very well the power equations from the literature. For higher head ratios, the discharge coefficient abruptly decreases from a value around 0.6 to a value around 0.55. This decrease corresponds to the apparition between the main flow and the weir of a low velocity area (the lower nappe does no more correspond to the weir profile). The analysis also shows a significant reduction of the discharge coefficient (around 10%) if the upstream quadrant design head is higher than 2 times the design head of the downstream quadrant. On the contrary, no modification of the discharge coefficient is measured if the upstream quadrant design head is smaller than the downstream quadrant one. [less ▲]

A scale model of the double side weir spillway of Aubusson d’Auvergne dam has been built and operated with a 1:20 scale factor and Froude similitude. The model enabled designing and optimizing, in concertation with the Client, a modified geometry of the structures meeting updated discharge capacity requirements. The modified geometry includes a fish ladder within the limits of the secondary channel. It implies modifications of the secondary channel cross section and longitudinal profile, the building of a side wall along the right bank and of a downstream ski jump with a deflector as well as a partial lowering of the side wall between the main and the secondary channels on its downstream part in order to optimize the use of the existing ski jump. From the designer point of view, the use of a hydraulic model enables, for a structure with a complex and non-conventional geometry, to clearly identify its hydraulic limitations and the solutions to be analyzed in order to mitigate them and thus fulfill the new design criteria. It would probably not have been possible to define the proposed solution without the use of a physical model as it is closely related to the hydraulic specificities of the studied structure. Thus, even in the case of small dams, hydraulic experimental modeling may improve the design, making it safer, better optimized and then decrease the project overall costs. [less ▲]

The Late Devonian was affected by major, irreversible changes including two of the most severe biodiversity crises in Earth’s history, the so-called Kellwasser and Hangenberg Events (respectively near the Frasnian – Famennian (F-F) and the Devonian – Carboniferous (D-C) boundaries). Currently, hypotheses for the Late Devonian extinctions include sea-level fluctuations and regression, climate cooling, ocean anoxia, massive volcanism and/or bolide impact. Unfortunately, testing these hypotheses is impaired by a lack of sufficient temporal resolution in paleobiological, tectonic and proxy climate records. Recent advances in astronomical calibration have improved the accuracy of the Frasnian time scale and part of the Famennian. However, the time duration of the Famennian Stage remains poorly constrained. During the Late Devonian, an epieric sea in North-America mid-continent occupied the Illinois Basin where a complete Late Frasnian – Early Carboniferous succession of deep-shelf deposits was archived. A record of this sequence is captured in three overlapping cores (H-30, Sullivan Slough and H-32). The H-30 core section spans the F-F boundary; the Sullivan Slough section spans almost all of the Famennian and the H-32 section sampled spans the D-C boundary. To have the best chance of capturing Milankovitch cycles, 2200 rock samples were collected at minimum 5-cm-interval across the entire sequence. Magnetic susceptibility (MS) was measured on each sample and the preservation of climatic information into the signal was verified through geochemical analyses. To estimate the duration of the Famennian stage, we applied multiple spectral techniques and tuned the MS signal using the highly stable 405 k.y. cycle for Sullivan Slough and the obliquity cycle (34.4 k.y.; Waltham, 2015) for the H-30 and H-32 cores. Based on the correlation between the cores and the tuning, we constructed a Famennian astronomical time scale, which indicates a duration of 13.3 m.y. An uncertainty of ± 0.5 m.y. was calculated to assess the errors raising from the stratigraphic position of the F-F and D-C boundaries, and the 405 k.y. cycle counting error. Our estimate duration is very close to the GTS-2012 duration (Becker, 2012) interpolated from the high-resolution (U/Pb) radiometric ages available for the uppermost Devonian. [less ▲]

Problem/Goal: Sharing the results of research with General Practitioners (GPs) is crucial for the survival of the discipline of General Practice / Family Medicine (GP/FM). The production of abstracts in GP/FM probably exceeds 15,000 per year worldwide. Each abstract often represents two years of work for its authors and is expressed in local languages. Only 45% of them are published in indexed medical journals. Usual indexing systems like MeSH are not multilingual nor adapted to the particular field of GP/FM. Consequently, these abstracts are lacking bibliographic control and more than half of the research presented by GPs at congresses is lost. Considering the absence of appropriate domain-specific terminologies or classification systems, we propose a new multilingual indexing system. The existing International Classification of Primary Care (ICPC) is currently used for clinical purposes and has now been expanded with a taxonomy related to contextual aspects (called Q-Codes) such as education, research, practice organization, ethics or policy in GP/FM, currently not captured. The set is proposed under the name Core Content Classification in General Practice (3CGP). The aim is to facilitate indexing of GP/FM specific scientific work and to improve performance in information storage and retrieval for research purposes in this field. Research Method/Procedure: Using qualitative analysis, a corpus of 1,702 abstracts from six GP/FM- related European congresses was analyzed to identify main themes discussed by GPs (e.g., continuity, accessibility or medical ethics), handled in a domain-specific taxonomy called Q-Codes and translated in 8 languages. In addition, a methodology for building a lightweight ontology (in OWL-2) was applied to Q-Codes, adding object and datatype properties to the hierarchical relations, including mapping to the MeSH thesaurus, Babelnet (www.babelnet.org) and Dbpedia. Finally, the Q-Codes in 8 languages have been integrated healthcare terminology service (www.hetop.eu/q) with a companion website (http://3cgp.docpatient.net). Anticipated Results of the Research: The creation and the on-line publication of this multilingual terminological resource, for indexing abstracts and for facilitating Medline searches, could reduce loss of knowledge in the domain. In addition, through better indexing of the grey literature (congress abstracts, master’s and doctoral thesis), we hope to enhance the accessibility of research results of GP/FM domain and promote the emergence of networks of researchers. First result of experimental implementations of the new indexing system will be presented. Indication of costs related to the project: This project has not been funded. 3CGP is placed under Attribution-Non-Commercial-Share-Alike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). The Late Devonian period was affected by major, irreversible changes including two of the most severe biodiversity crises in Earth’s history, the so-called Kellwasser and Hangenberg Events (respectively at the Frasnian – Famennian and the Famennian – Carboniferous boundaries). Recent advances in astronomical dating have improved the accuracy of the Frasnian time scale and part of the Famennian (De Vleeschouwer et al., 2012, 2013). However, the time duration of the Famennian stage remains poorly constrained even though this is the key to understanding cause-and-effect relationships of the Late Devonian greenhouse–icehouse transition and the onset of the end Famennian glaciation that ultimately led to the Hangenberg Event at the Devonian–Carboniferous boundary. During the Late Devonian an epieric sea in mid-continent North America occupied the Illinois Basin onto which a Late Frasnian – Early Carboniferous sequence of deep-shelf deposits was archived. A complete record of this sequence, mainly composed of marl, organic-rich shale, silty-shale and carbonate, is captured in three overlapping cores stored in the Iowa Geological Survey (H-30, Sullivan Slough and H-32). H-30 records the Frasnian-Famennian boundary, the Sullivan Slough covers almost all the Famennian (middle triangularis-upper expansa conodont zones) and H-32 spans the junction between the uppermost Famennian and lowermost Carboniferous. To have the best chance of capturing Milankovitch cycles (long- and short-eccentricity cycles as well as obliquity and precession), 2200 rock samples were collected at 5-cm intervals across the entire sequence. Magnetic susceptibility (MS) was measured on each sample and the preservation of paleoenvironmental/climatic information into the signal was verified through geochemical analyses (Ti, Al, Zr by XRF) and magnetic measurements (low temperature magnetic susceptibility and IRM acquisitions). Correlation and overlap between each core was made using available conodont biostratigraphy and then refined by comparing the trends in the MS and δ13C signals for critical intervals. To estimate the duration of the Famennian stage we applied multiple techniques on the MS signal (multitaper method, evolutive harmonic analysis and adaptive-weighted harmonic F-test). By combining these techniques, we identified highly stable 405-kyr cycles across the Sullivan Slough and the H-32 cores. 405-kyr cycles were not observed in H-30, but 100-kyr cycles were identified. A preliminary estimate of the duration for the Famennian stage using the 405-kyr cycle as chronometer constrains the duration of the Famennian stage to 13 ± 0.4 Myr with an average sedimentation rate of 0.5 cm/kyr across the sequence. Rab guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF-)1 (Rabgef1), a multifunctional protein whose in vivo functions remained unknown until recently, is highly expressed in mouse and human epithelial cells. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of Rabgef1 in intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) and intestinal homeostasis in mice. We performed conditional deletion of Rabgef1 gene using the cre-lox system to obtain mice lacking Rabgef1 specifically in IECs (Rabgef1IEC-KO), under the wild-type (WT) or the colitis-prone Interleukin-10 (Il-10)-deficient background. In addition, we used the CRISPR-Cas9 technology to obtain a murine IEC line deficient in Rabgef1. Rabgef1IEC-KO mice under the WT background did not develop spontaneous intestinal abnormalities but exhibited an altered intestinal microbial composition associated with minor changes in IEC pro-inflammatory gene expression profile. Moreover, Rabgef1IEC-KO mice exhibited an increased susceptibility to inflammation in a dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced model of colitis under the WT background, as well as in a constitutive model of colitis under the Il-10-¬deficient background. In vitro, we showed that mouse IECs lacking Rabgef1 significantly overexpressed several pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines as compared to control cells. Taken together, these results support that Rabgef1 acts as a regulator of intestinal homeostasis and inflammation, and that dysregulated Rabgef1 expression could contribute to intestinal barrier dysfunction in inflammatory conditions of the gut. This study is focused on Saadian ceramics called zellige from the archaeological sites of "El Badi palace" and "Saadian Tombs" (Marrakech, Morocco) dated in late 16th Century and classified as world heritage by UNESCO in 2008. A multi-analytical approach based on optical microscopy, cathodoluminescence, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence and X-ray diffraction investigations and re-firing tests on ceramic supports has been used,in order to determineraw materials source, technical manufacturing and firing temperatures used by the Saadian artisans. Production technology, microstructure and the chemical compositionsuggest that the zellige pieces used in the construction of Saadian monuments in Marrakech are either imported from Fez, i.e. the main center of production of the zellige in Morocco, or manufactured locally in Marrakech according to the current standards and procedures in Fez. The calcareous clay raw materialwas used to manufacture these ceramics, but firing temperature was different. Zellige of El Badi palace was fired at a maximum temperature of 700°C in oxidizing atmosphere, while the one of Saadian Tombs was fired in the range 900-950 °C. The low firing temperature for Zellige facilitates the pieces cutting but it is responsible for the poor quality of these materials due to the absence of the vitreous phases. The results provide a scientific support for decision making in future conservation and restoration strategies of historical monumentsacross Morocco. [less ▲]

The present study is aimed at bringing together the benefits of different approaches for extracting information on surface currents from satellite-derived datasets and ocean data reanalysis. As a region of interest, we use the Western Mediterranean, which is having a peculiar pattern of surface circulation, due to the inflow of Atlantic water through the Strait of Gibraltar. Among the data analysed in this study, there are fields of sea surface temperature (SST) as well as different datasets on surface currents retrieved from satellite altimetry data, satellite imagery and their synergy. In particular, we analyse (i) fields of geostrophic currents retrieved from a gridded sea level anomaly (SLA) data product, (ii) the data on total surface currents derived in the framework of the GlobCurrent project, and (iii) the data provided by reanalysis. Special attention is being paid to the performance of different datasets in manifesting largest mesoscale eddies of the region of interest. As a result of the comparison performed, the general scheme of surface circulation in the region of interest was updated. Main novelties proposed by the renewed scheme concerns the number of cyclonic gyres presenting in the field of surface currents. [less ▲]

[less ▲]
