In recent years, the use of SERS-CI in pharmaceutical sciences has increased in order to study the distribution of low-dose compounds in solid dosage forms [1]. This technique allows to improve the sensitivity of conventional Raman microscopy and to reduce significantly the image acquisition time by exalting the signal information. However, the applications of SERS-CI in the pharmaceutical field remain limited, especially due to the difficulty of obtaining a homogeneous deposit of metallic nanoparticles on the sample surface. Generally, the covering method used on the tablet is a drop casting deposition due to its simplicity and rapidity of implementation. Despite the colloidal solution deposit is not fully controlled. The inhomogeneous covering is the result of the “coffee-ring” effect that concentrates the nanoparticles at the edges of the droplet [2]. This implies remarkable variations of the SERS analyte signal’s intensity at different places. For a more reproducible and homogeneous coating, an aerospray method using a homemade apparatus was developed (Figure 1). The device is composed with a pair of coaxial tubes, the colloidal solution is pulled through the inner tube from a syringe pump and the outer tube is connected to a source of high pressure gas. Nitrogen, used as a nebulizing gas, creates a flow of small droplets of nanoparticles that are nearly dry when they hit the sample surface. The aerospray device is easy to implement and the entire surface of the tablet is covered by the SERS substrate in a homogeneous way. By using this covering method, the potential of SERS-CI is improved and making it a suitable technique for quantitative analyses of low drug concentrations or impurities in pharmaceutical tablets. The nose is the input channel for the airflow. Its rigid and erectile structures determine the outline and the output of the airflow in the upper airway. Nose obstruction, due to reversible or non reversible factors, produces collapsing forces that are manifest downstream in the collapsible pharynx. Moreover, nose pathologies result in unstable oral breathing, decreased activation of nasal-ventilatory reflex and reduced lung nitric oxide. Long-term oral breathing impacts on the craniofacial growth. The management of nose pathologies coud be medical, mechanical (nose dilators) or surgical. Nasal management should be integrated in a multimodal approach, considering the involvement of a multi-level obstruction, and truly reflecting the complexity of sleep disordered breathing. [less ▲]

To date, the idea that the OXPHOS complexes can associate with each other in larger structures named supercomplexes [1] is generally accepted. This association can allow a more efficient transport of electrons to minimize the generation of reactive oxygen species during electron transfer reactions and can also be involved in the regulation of the mitochondrial metabolism in response to different stimuli, carbon sources or stress conditions. Recently, the arising studies outside the classical models yeast and bovine mitochondria brought to light many unusual characteristics in the ATP synthase from a wide variety of organisms. Due to this, the dimer nature of the mitochondrial ATP synthase is no longer a matter of debate. Given the large structural differences among the peripheral stator and dimerization modules of mitochondrial ATP synthases described so far, it is of relevance to study a wider number of species to gain insight into the structural diversity of their OXPHOS complexes. Recently, our group showed that at least 41 of the non-canonical subunits reported in trypanosomes are also present in Euglena complexes along with 48 classical subunits described in other eukaryotes including green plants [2]. Further purification of the complexes I, III, IV and V by liquid chromatography after solubilization with n-β-dodecyl-maltoside and the subsequent analysis by single-particle analysis from transmission electron microscopy revealed some unusual features in Euglena respiratory complexes. In the case of complex V the structures of both the catalytic and central rotor parts are conserved while other structural features are original, including a large membrane-spanning region joining the monomers, an external peripheral stalk and a structure that goes through the membrane and reaches the inter membrane space below the c-ring [3]. Complex I also shows an unusually long matricial arm. Complex IV shows an atypical shape compared to that of the bovine one. An unusual association between complexes I and V can be observed when the membranes are extracted with the mild detergent digitonin. Other case of atypical subunit composition is the complex V of chlorophycean algae. Each monomer of the enzyme has 17 polypeptides, eight of which are the conserved, main functional components, and nine polypeptides (Asa1 to Asa9) unique to this lineage that form the robust peripheral stalk in this complex [4]. This complex presents highly stable dimeric and tetrameric structures, and the respiratory complexes have an unusual capacity to reassociate in vitro and restore the functional respirasome. [less ▲]

The use of online video is not new in education but it undergoes a new momentum. What is new is not the medium but its scale of deployment and availability (Van Gog, 2013). MOOCs have played their part in this rise since these new modes of online learning deliver learning through a series of (short) videos. Both for teachers and Teaching & Learning Centers, like IFRES at the University of Liège, designing, shooting, editing, ornamenting, and locating such videos in the instructional design of a MOOC is a challenge. This presentation documents how this challenge was experienced on both sides. As for staff trainers, MOOCs imply the implementation of a particular technical infrastructure and pedagogical engineering. At the University of Liège, it also demanded to grapple with a corpus of new concerns such as: - Appropriate lengths of instructional videos (Guo, Kim, Rubin, 2014); - Cognitive load theory applied to multimedia components (Cooper, 1990; Barrett, 2006; Sweller, 2011) - Quality principles in instructional multimedia (Mayer, 2005) - Pedagogic strategies for the use of video (Zhang 2006; Hibbert; 2014, Thomson, Bridgstock, & Willems, 2014) - Inventories of videos styles in order to go beyond the seamless shot of teachers in front of blackboards or slideshows (Hansch, Newman, Hiller, Schildauer, Mc Conachie, & Schmidt, 2015; Van de Poël, Martin, & Verpoorten, 2015) Afterwards, an extra effort had to be made to convert these resources into a series of conceptual tools (storyboard framework, grid of qualitative criteria, etc.) usable by average teachers to their writing of the video sequences. The presentation will describe these processes intended to a) securing the video production of three MOOCs in a tight timeframe (institutional requirement) and b) fostering the pedagogical development of the involved teachers (“raison d’être” of a Teaching & Learning Center). As for teachers, the presentation will provide a report of the difficulties and surprises teachers came across when designing efficient videos. Some of these cognitive discrepancies suggest that the making of instructional videos calls for a different set of skills than those required for classroom teaching. Sometimes MOOCs instructors wrongly believed that they could translate their offline teaching experience to an online environment without much preparation and pedagogical novelty (Hansh & al., 2015). Lessons learnt show that it is critical for the writing process of the first video sequences to be an object of great care by the faculty support team. During this process, it is important that each comment, suggestion or decision be systematically explained to the teachers in order to create new beacons and tenets. A questionnaire survey of 10 participant teachers, coupled with 3 in-depth interviews conducted according to an appreciative mode of inquiry (Cockell & McArthur-Blair, 2012) will be administered. Protocol analyses will be applied on the interviews data in order to ascertain to what extent the making of MOOCs videos conveyed opportunities for pedagogical development. 1. Introduction Continuing education poses a challenge to the university: the objective is to allow professionals on the job market to enhance their competences through curricula adapted to their needs, both in terms of schedule and contents as well as teaching approaches applied. In its MOOCs policy, the University of Liège has identified this priority axis precisely to meet this requirement of schedule, contents and teaching approach. Already taught at the ULg, children's literature offered a perfect option for its pilot project. Popular culture studies are already one of the specificities of the Arts faculty program, and the University thought important to allow for a wider access to this teaching, responding to a growing interest from the civil society. 2. Problem description / challenges Up to now, there were, in French-speaking Belgium, only very few training opportunities on children's literature, based on cutting-edge scientific research, aimed at future or already established teachers. Although children's literature is one of the subject areas taught in secondary schools in French-speaking Belgium, it is not compulsory in the curriculum of aspiring French teachers at higher education institutions (whether universities or hautes écoles). Teaching children's literature thus depends on the teacher's good will: hence the importance of finding a way to train teachers in a subject area they have to teach to secondary school students by putting forward a large-scale but cost controlled solution, open to anyone looking for this specific training, and offering a certificate with a professional value. It was also important for the university to propose an innovative teaching format distinct from the practices generally in force and especially adapted to the adult-learning in terms of pedagogical approach (Thorpe,Edwards,Hanson, 1993). 3. MOOC Format Choosing the MOOC format was an important challenge: on the production level, above all, given the relative inexperience of the teaching staff, supported by a team of instructional designers and a production staff with experience in the creation of online contents for the University's online education platform; but also on the reception level, given that the expected audience is not particularly in line with digital technologies: MOOCs on literature are not the most common ones, and bookish readers are not known to be new technology buffs. The MOOC offers a selection of topics related to the field of children's literature, each under the responsibility of one team member, generally supported by experts. The MOOC tackles two main genres, the novel and the album, presents the publishing market, elaborates on digital literature and explores fictions beyond the book; it includes videos, quizzes, integrative activities, and feedback through forums. Each chapter of our MOOC adopts a modular and autonomous approach. These two characteristics allow learners to follow the MOOC according to their own needs or simply their interests. 4. Initial success The first session, in early March 2017, was a success, with more than 10000 subscribers, quite above the average for MOOCs in French. This is, for many subscribers, their first MOOC experience. Moreover, the motivation and investment of the community is remarkable: the forums are very active, the learners an-swer to and help each other. The feedback is extremely positive, showing a general willingness to partici-pate in the construction of collective knowledge useful for everyone. The information collected from participants is also an early success indicator in terms of population target. 5. Shaping Up for the Future Given this initial success, and in order to enhance this in-depth continued training, the teaching staff is envisioning for next year to develop a summer school linked to the MOOC and implement a blended learning element to our MOOC. The participants would first have to follow the MOOC and complete the required activities, in order to be granted certification. Afterwards, a limited number of these participants (probably around fifty) will be selected based on applications to participate in person to a course that would expand on the introduction to the subject offered by the MOOC. This training would highly benefit from the exceptional resources that the city of Liège holds for children's literature: the Michel Defourny archive, holding more than 30000 pieces, is indeed a unique site in Europe which deserves a better valorization from the University. Current codes and standards for fire design of structures in the United States are mainly based on design at the component level using prescriptive approaches, while performance-based design for fire can be used to address the needs for designing modern buildings with cost-effective solutions. Previous research shows that, when system-level performance is considered, fire protection on secondary beam elements in composite steel-concrete floor systems is not necessary due to the development of a membrane action in the concrete slab during fire. This study compares the fire design of a 9-story office building using prescriptive and performance-based designs. The safety levels of the two designs are investigated and compared. It is shown that performance-based design can be used to achieve the required level of safety currently enforced in the U.S. prescriptive guidelines, while providing an opportunity for cost reduction in fire protection material. Al alloy AlSi10Mg processed by Selective Laser Melting (SLM) displays high hardness and tensile strength due to its very fine eutectic microstructure [1]. However, as-built material exhibits low ductility which is detrimental for applications where a high resilience is needed. To overcome this issue, solution heat treatment can be applied to soften and ductilize the material [2]. The very fine eutectic microstructure then turns into a dispersion of coarse globular Si precipitates. The distribution of Si precipitates seems to play a role in the fracture mechanism in as-built as well as solutionized tempers, but this effect is not yet fully understood [1,3]. Moreover, the lack of quantitative data makes it difficult to link precisely the fracture mechanisms to specific microstructural features. This study aims at investigating the role of the Si phase in the rupture mechanism, for both as-built and solutionized samples. It will focus more particularly on the heterogeneity of the distribution of Si precipitates where cracks are more likely to occur. Al cells size, along with the volume fraction and distribution of Si precipitates have been quantified by SEM image analysis. Al lattice parameter and Si crystallite size have been determined by X-ray diffraction/Rietveld analysis. For the image analysis, two types of specific zones have been observed i.e. the core and boundary of melt pools and Al grains, at different locations for representativity. At the present time, electron beam lithography (EBL) is considered as the reference technique for nanoscale patterning. However, making nanostructures below the sub-10 nm scale is still challenging due to broadening effects (forward electron scattering, backscattering, electrostatic charging…), and requires strong investment in terms of cost for state-of-the-art EBL systems. In this sense, alternative methods are continuously explored in order to make such nanofabrication easily reachable. A promising approach consists of inducing atomic diffusion by a large current density. This phenomenon, called electromigration (EM), and well known since the 60’s as a failure mechanism in metallic interconnections [1], still attracts interests from scientists and engineers for its great potential for fabrication of microstructures and for its reversibility character [2, 3]. In this work, we show that the combination of electromigration and anti-electromigration allows the precise tuning of superconducting properties of Al nanoconstrictions and we also observe the reversibility of electromigration failure for this material (see Fig. 1). The same process has been applied on Nb, leading to a more irreversible process, and La2 xCexCuO4. For the latter material, we show that selective migration of oxygen atoms and the consequent doping modification induces a transition from a superconducting state to an insulating state in a reversible way [4]. We also discussed the possibility to enhance the electromigration technique by replacing the complex feedback control by a technique of electropulsing. These researches have direct practical impact as a method to explore the dependence of the characteristic parameters on the exact oxygen content and pave the way for a reversible control of local properties of nanowires. Bovine Leukemia Virus (BLV) is a deltaretrovirus that integrates into B-cells producing a lifelong infection in cattle. Like its close relative Human T-cell leukemia virus-1 (HTLV-1), BLV induces an aggressive leukemia/lymphoma in about ~5% of infected individuals. While not a natural host it is possible to infect sheep with BLV and in contrast to cattle, all infected sheep develop tumors at an accelerated rate (~18 months). Historically research into both viruses has primarily focused on their transcripts/proteins. However secondary somatic events are likely to be important as only a subset of infected individuals, following many decades of infection, develop a tumor. At the current time little is known about the landscape of somatic changes in BLV induced tumors and the timing of their occurrence. To address this we have carried out whole genome sequencing of BLV induced tumors from two cattle, and from five sheep with matched normal tissue. This revealed frequent aneuploidy, with orthologous regions of the genome involved in both species and elevated mitochondria DNA copy numbers in tumors. Recurrent structural variants (SVs) were seen affecting the tumor suppressors CDKN2A and ARID1A, both on OAR2. On average ~1400 somatic SNVs were observed in each ovine tumor, with high/moderate impact variants in known cancer drivers genes such as KMT2A, ATRX, RPL22 and KRAS. The five sheep were also sampled at regular time points, prior to leukemia onset, allowing us to examine tumor clone evolution. High throughput sequencing of proviral integration sites showed that the tumor clone represents only a small fraction of the infected cells for the majority of the disease, only expanding rapidly in the terminal stages. Low coverage sequencing of samples prior to tumor development indicates that aneuploidy of OAR9 is a feature of the majority of BLV infected clones. Preliminary nested PCR also showed that many SVs were present prior to tumor development. High throughput approaches are being developed to track both SVs and SNV in the preleukemic stages of the disease. [less ▲]

Mitochondrial respiratory-chain complexes fromEuglenozoa comprise classical subunits described in other eukaryotes (i.e. mammals and fungi) and subunits that are restricted to Euglenozoa (e.g. Euglena gracilis and Trypanosoma brucei). Herewe studied the mitochondrial F1FO-ATP synthase (or Complex V) fromthe photosynthetic eukaryote E. gracilis in detail. The enzymewas purified by a two-step chromatographic procedure and its subunit compositionwas resolved by a three-dimensional gel electrophoresis (BN/SDS/SDS).Twenty-two different subunits were identified by mass-spectrometry analyses amongwhich the canonical α, β, γ, δ, ε, and OSCP subunits, and at least seven subunits previously found in Trypanosoma. The ADP/ATP carrierwas also associated to the ATP synthase into a dimericATP synthasome. Single-particle analysis by transmission electron microscopy of the dimeric ATP synthase indicated that the structures of both the catalytic and central rotor parts are conserved while other structural features are original. The availability of forest resources is directly affected by forest composition and structure changes that can regularly occur in the context of intensive silviculture and plantation of fast-growing tree species. Since 2000, the total area covered by Norway spruce plantations has decreased by an estimated 25% in Southern Belgium (Wallonia), which is especially worrying as they yield almost half of the total timber volume of the region. In order to predict the evolution of our forest resources, we first used aerial photographic interpretation to update the data of the permanent regional inventory and provide a more accurate assessment of the current resources of Wallonia. We then developed harmonized distance independent growth and management models for the three most planted softwood species of Wallonia : Norway spruce (Picea abies), Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziensii) and larches (Larix sp.). These models were then implemented in a simulation software that can operate at a regional scale. This presentation introduces our methodology, the operating of our simulator, our current progress to adapt it for other stand structures and compositions and examples of carried out simulations. Bulk (RE)BCO samples can be used as efficient permanent magnets with trapped magnetic flux densities of a few teslas at 77 K. However, their magnetization may decay over time when subjected to time-varying parasitic fields perpendicular to the initial trapped flux density. In this work, we consider hybrid structures made of superconducting pellets and soft ferromagnetic rings or disks and investigate numerically how their magnetization varies under such crossed-field excitations. We consider a finite-element model in the A-V formulation, which is developed for both the full 3D configuration of the system and for a computationally lighter 2D approximation. The models provide the volumic distribution of current densities, the field lines, and the magnetization of the system, and the latter is compared to experimental measurements obtained with a bespoke magnetometer. A critical assessment is made outlining the advantages and limitations of the 2D approach. It is demonstrated that the ferromagnetic material helps in increasing the initial trapped field and in reducing the crossed-field effects. For the case of a single ferromagnetic disk put on top of the superconducting pellet, we study the dependence of the initial magnetization with respect to the disk thickness and the saturation field of the ferromagnetic material, and discuss the resulting optimal thickness. We also suggest different hybrid structures made of one superconducting pellet and one or several ferromagnetic disks or rings, and show numerically that a compromise is to be found between the maximum level of induction which can be reached and the improved protection against crossed-field effects. We consider the penetration of magnetic flux perpendicular to a Nb superconducting film containing edge indentations and/or defects. The presence of such defects and indented edges forces the induced currents to change direction abruptly, which gives rise to discontinuity lines (d-lines). It has been recently shown, by magneto-optical means, that the shape of the d-lines contain information about the size and the shape of the indentations [1]. Moreover, in contrast with what is commonly assumed, thermomagnetic instabilities are not preferentially triggered near the manufactured indentations, but rather along smooth edges [1]. Such phenomena can lead to unexpected quenching of superconducting samples and considerably damage them, which must be avoided in applications. In this poster, we investigate whether inhomogeneous superconducting properties can be responsible for triggering magnetic flux avalanches. To this aim, we numerically model the flux penetration and determine the distribution of current lines and electric fields for a situation where the superconducting properties vary locally over a small region of the film. We consider the variation of the thickness of the film, the critical current density and the size of the discontinuity. The resulting shapes of the d-lines are deduced and compared to analytical critical state approximations. We also determine the location and the amplitude of the maximal electric field in the film and compare it to typical values which must be reached in order to trigger magnetic flux avalanches. We conclude that the investigated variations lead to levels of electric field which are of the same order of magnitude as those generated by artificial indentations. [less ▲]

Information regarding age- and size-related parameters is of paramount importance both to understanding the life-history of populations, and for designing effective conservation strategies; however, such base-line data lacks for many species, especially for those inhabiting tropical habitats. Using skeletochronology, we provide the first detailed information regarding the demography of the Pacific horned frog, Ceratophrys stolzmanni, a vulnerable, fossorial amphibian, that lives in the Tumbesian dry-forests of Ecuador. The species shows an intense growth rate during the first activity season, both before and after metamorphosis. Sexual maturity is achieved by both sexes before the first year of life, after which growth rates abruptly decrease. Females are on average larger, but not older, than males, mean age being two years in both sexes. The rapid sexual maturation is associated with a short life-span, the observed maximum longevity being three years in males and four years in females. The short reproductive life-span, which offers few mating opportunities, might have important implications for the conservation of this species, that can be especially at risk in the case of prolonged droughts expected to affect its habitat. On the 15th of September 2017, the Cassini spacecraft will plunge into the atmosphere of Saturn, making the end of the successful Cassini-Huygens mission. During this unprecedented mission, Cassini will have spent 13 years around Saturn, achieving almost 300 orbits around the planet and continuously collecting observations of Saturn, its rings, moons and space environment. In this talk, after a short introduction about the genesis of the Cassini mission, I will give a review of all the important results of the mission. The dynamics of Saturn's atmosphere and magnetosphere will be discussed, as well as the discoveries about the evolution of the rings. An important part of the presentation will be also devoted to the moons Titan and Enceladus which both exhibit striking characteristics. [less ▲]

Parkinson’s disease is a frequent degenerative disorder, and for the moment the diagnosis is mainly clinical. When the first symptoms appear, loss of more than 70% of the dopaminergic cells already occurred. Knowing that, it is of high interest to have one (or more) reliable biomarker(s) at our disposal to diagnose Parkinson before the first symptoms appear. Alpha-synuclein (aSyn) is a protein physiologically expressed at high level by neuronal cells, under a monomeric form. This protein would play a critical role in the development of the disease because under certain conditions, aSyn is capable of self-assembly to form fibrils like those found in Lewy bodies. Other intermediate soluble forms like dimers and oligomers are also formed. As these forms seems to be the toxic species, they are the center of many attentions. The quantification of each form would be a great help, but for the moment only the total forms (of monomeric or oligomeric) can be quantified. In this study, aSyn oligomers were generated after optimization of incubation conditions (pH, temperature, agitation, …). Then, different approaches were investigated to detect and follow the different species formed during the aggregation. We analyzed the oligomers by capillary gel electrophoresis (CGE) and SDS-PAGE. We found that capillary gel electrophoresis is a promising automated technique to analyze aSyn oligomers, due to the fact that it separates the aggregates according to their size, like the SDS-PAGE, but with more advantages. To gain sensitivity and selectivity by CGE, we used a laser-induced fluorescence detector. As aSyn do not have a native fluorescence, we derivatized it. After careful screening and optimization of various derivatization reagents, we could quantify with high sensitivity aSyn oligomers by CGE-LIF. We realized different calibration curves, and we had promising results that will allow us to quantify the different aSyn oligomeric forms in biological fluids. [less ▲]

Fluorophosphates are considered among the most interesting series of cathode material for Li/Na-ion batteries1. Na2FePO4F (space group Pbcn), with its layered structure and two-dimensional pathways for facile Na+/Li+ transport, exhibits minimal structural changes upon reduction/oxidation. The average working voltage is 3.3 V vs. Li/Li+. Intercalation/deintercalation results in a volume change of only 3.7%. However, one of the key drawbacks of Na2FePO4F electrodes is their low intrinsic electronic conductivity. In order to study the effect of the carbon black and carbon nanotubes on the electrochemical performance of Na2FePO4F cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, Na2FePO4F, Na2FePO4F/CB and Na2FePO4F/CNT were prepared by a spray-drying method with different ratios of CB and CNT (10 and 20%). The crystal and local structure were analyzed by XRD and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The electrochemical properties were studied by galvanostatic cycling in lithium cells. The electrochemical performance is markedly better in the case of Na2FePO4F/CNT (20 wt%), with specific capacities of about 100 mAh/g (Na2FePO4F/CNT) at C/4 rate2 vs. 50 mAh/g for Na2FePO4F/CB. The characterization of Na2FePO4F/CB particles by electron microscopy revealed a carbon-poor surface and a good carbon dispersion for Na2FePO4F/CNT particles attributed to better diffusion of carbon nanotubes in the droplets during drying. Fatigue is an important mode of failure in mechanical engineering and accounting for it as soon as the early stage of design using topology optimization sounds primordial. Structures undergoing high-cycle fatigue can be described by the stress-based approach and then a stress-based topology optimization framework, which has received great interest since almost 20 years because of the innovative designs that can be achieved to answer strength requirements, can be used. Literature reports many good results for shape optimization [Mrzyglod & Zielinsky(2006)] whereas in the eld of topology optimization several authors have shown that considering fatigue in an optimization framework leads to more relevant solutions where fluctuating loads are involved [Holmberg E.(2015), Collet et al(2016), Sv ard(2015)]. The good behaviour of the implementation of an advanced fatigue criterion, i.e. the multiaxial Dang Van criterion [Dang Van et al(1989)] is first investigated in the framework of a density-based topology optimization problem. The choice of this fatigue criterion is justifed by its good applicability in automotive or aeronautic industry as well as its relevancy with respect to experimental results. We present the sensitivity analysis with stress constraints and present some classical benchmarks to illustrate the behaviour of the optimized solution. In a second time, the fatigue resistance is introduced in the well-known microstructural design [Sigmund (2000)] also know as architectured material design which are now considered in mechanical engineering because of their manufacturability thanks to additive manufacturing processes. Ensuring the fatigue resistance of the cellular material will by extension ensure the structural integrity of the overall structure itself. The optimization is performed by using the MMA optimizer [Svanberg(1987)] whereas the singularity phenomenon of the stress constraints is circumvented by using the qp-relaxation [Bruggi(2008)]. Both types of optimization framework are evaluated in term of their numerical performances and are compared to classical results generated by a regular stress-based topology optimization. Finally, the results are 3D-printed to assess for their manufacturability. [less ▲]

In Wallonia, special efforts are needed in order to respect the international recommendations on physical activity in youth. School is definitely considered as a central pillar in the promotion of an active lifestyle. The aim of this study was to analyze the implementation process of daily activity breaks called ‘Physical Activity Pause at School’ (PAPS) in 6 primary schools of the Liege area. 23 classroom teachers were involved. They had to propose at least one PAPS/day during the 15-16 school year. Diary, questionnaires, focus groups and interviews were used for data collecting. Two thirds of the subjects continued until the end. The videos were not systematically used. Four teachers’ profiles were identified: Innovators, Invested, Careful, and Disengaged. 12 factors facilitating or limitating the involvement of the teachers have been analyzed. The study comes to a model of concrete actions to respect in order to increase the chances of success in the implementation of such project. [less ▲]

Diabetes is becoming a leading health issue worldwide. It occurs under insulin resistance/deficiency and when insulin-producing pancreatic beta-cell mass is dramatically reduced. Besides therapeutic strategies to preserve beta-cell mass and function and improve insulin treatments, beta-cell replacement constitutes a promising alternative to replenish the pancreas with functional beta-cells. Beta-cell neogenesis can be achieved from different pancreatic cell types leading to the hope that triggering regeneration could be harnessed in future therapies. Still, mammals show limited regenerative capabilities, making difficult the study of these mechanisms. In contrast, zebrafish is extensively used for regeneration studies notably of beta-cells. We recently showed that the adult zebrafish ducts display characteristics of embryonic pancreatic progenitors that give rise to beta-cells in physiological and induced diabetic condition*. To better understand the molecular mechanisms underlying this potential, genes and signaling pathways regulated in the zebrafish pancreatic ducts after beta-cell ablation have been identified by transcriptomic profiling. For functional studies, we have developed an assay using 7-20 days old larvae to investigate the role of selected candidate pathways in beta-cell regeneration with pharmacological inhibitors/activators and by transgenic overexpression of candidate signaling factors. These results should provide new hints to help improve regenerative competences in mammals. [less ▲]

Woven into complex social, political and cultural fields, migrants’ experiences and narrations of mobility and of how they fare outside their hometown, of how they are more or less successful in their attempts to negociate social hierarchies and the formation of their identities often closely articulate with major social norms and values, as well as with processes of state formation. In this contribution, I argue that in studying how migrants’ agency are at once enabling and shaped by structural forces there is a need to focus on processes of “mediation” as these processes enable to think seriously the relationship between institutions/organisations , people and meanings . Focusing on processes of mediation enables to deal with how people’s subjectivities and agency are shaped in complex and never totalizing ways by the very institutions (medias) through which they mediate their experiences. By documenting specifically how migrant workers in post-Mao China mediate their experiences of social hierarchies and social mobility via their engagement with a specific form of media (popular literature), I stress the relevance of intertextuality, of the notion of “genre” (Bakhtin), of “publics” and draw from Roseberry’s use of “hegemonic frameworks” for whom hegemony is helfpful to study “the ways in which the words, images, symbols, forms, organizations, institutions, and movements used by subordinate populations to talk about, understand, confront, accommodate themselves to, or resist their domination are shaped by the process of domination itself”. For Roseberry, “What hegemony constructs, then is not a shared ideology, but a common material and meaningful framework for living through, talking about, and acting upon social orders characterized by domination”. According to this approach, establishing such a framework rests on “prescribed forms of procedures” or “prescribed forms for expressing both acceptance and discontent”, as well as anger, disillusion, aspirations, desires, etc. (Roseberry, 1994, p. 360-361). The Wallonia-Brussels Federation is about to overhaul its education system, which will directly affect teacher training. Under the “Pact for Excellence in Education”, a group of experts – the Consortium “Physical Activities, Well-Being and Health” – drawn from the 12 French-speaking institutions training PE teachers (universities and colleges) has been mandated by the Ministry of Education to design devices and tools aiming at implementing the new common core curriculum that is under construction. Good practices have been identified then described in information sheets common to the different consortiums of the PEE and listed in a table that cross-references the 6 dimensions of physical activity at school (Snyers et al., 2014) and the 20 objects of teaching-learning in health education (Turcotte et al., 2011). These good practices are meant to be shared later within a community of practice. This paper provides a description of one of these information sheets in order to illustrate the methodology applied in this project. [less ▲]

Amnesic patients rely predominantly on familiarity for recognition. This familiarity is thought to be based on processing fluency. However whether amnesic patients use normally this metacognitive heuristic is not yet known. We used the Jacoby and Whitehouse (1989)’s illusion paradigm with 8 patients with severe memory impairments and 16 matched control. We found a fluency effect, with more “old” responses being given to matched-prime test words than to mismatched-prime test words. In addition, we replicated the effect of modality (Westerman et al., 2002) in the control group. The fluency induced the recognition illusion, but only when there was a match between study and test sensory modality. However, this modality effect seems limited to control participants. Amnesic patients seem unable to disregard fluency when there was a shift in the sensory modality of the study and test stages. Overall, these findings support the notion that amnesic patients did not modulate their use of the fluency heuristic in situations where fluency is judged non-diagnostic of prior exposure by healthy participants. On the whole, these findings suggest that processing fluency can constitute a cue for recognition decision in amnesia. However, this influence is not direct and is subject to metamemorial belief changes. [less ▲]

The wide angle adopted for our long-term analysis of Belgian data allows us to place in perspective two crucial moments of economic history, the two financial crises of 1929 and 2008. Economists have established several parallels between these two historical periods and our long-term approach provides an opportunity to examine their respective impacts in terms of punishment. Notwithstanding the short hindsight for the second crisis, key issues are emerging from the analysis of both discourses and statistical (national and international) indicators, both in the socioeconomic and political spheres and in the penal field. Could the recent crisis and its consequences predict that we are at a threshold in terms of the use of punishment? Which ‘ingredients’ are at stake in the possible future trends? We propose to explore these questions in light of some available data. [less ▲]

Diabetes is becoming a leading health issue worldwide. It occurs under insulin resistance/deficiency and when insulin-producing pancreatic beta-cell mass is dramatically reduced. Besides therapeutic strategies to preserve beta-cell mass and function and improve insulin treatments, beta-cell replacement constitutes a promising alternative to replenish the pancreas with functional beta-cells. Several observations of pancreatic cell plasticity has led to the hope that triggering beta-cell regeneration within the pancreas could be harnessed in future therapies. Still, mammals show limited regenerative capabilities, making difficult the study of these mechanisms. In contrast, zebrafish is extensively used for regeneration studies notably of beta-cells. We recently showed that the adult zebrafish ducts display characteristics of embryonic pancreatic progenitors that can give rise to beta-cells in physiological and induced diabetic condition*, and we determined the transcriptomic profile of zebrafish pancreatic ducts during beta-cell regeneration. To identify new genes crucial for beta-cell regeneration we plan to investigate the role of about 10 selected candidate genes by analyzing invalidating mutations created by CRISPR/Cas9. Their effect on beta-cell regeneration will be studied in 7-20 old larvae which we have established as experimental platform for functional studies. This project should help decipher the molecular mechanism of beta-cell regeneration. [less ▲]

Objective The normal aging is associated with decrease in executive functioning efficiency. However, the source of these cognitive difficulties could reside in some factors that are not executive per se. Therefore, this present study is aimed at determining whether speed of processing and attentional variables would mediate the effect of age on the executive functioning. Participants and Methods Young (n = 104) and old (n = 63) participants were enrolled and carried out a large battery made of 21 executive (inhibition, shifting, working memory updating, and double task coordination), attentional (phasic alertness, selective attention, and sustained attention), and processing speed tasks. Based on Baron & Kenny’s recommendations (1986), mediation models of the age effect on the executive functioning were carried out with processing speed and attentional system taken as mediators. Results Selective attention significantly mediated the effect of age on working memory updating [􀇻R2 = 7%, p < .001]. Moreover, processing speed significantly mediated the effect of age on shifting [􀇻R2 = 7%, p < .001], working memory updating [􀇻R2 = 5%, p < .001], and double task coordination [􀇻R2 = 14%, p < .001]. Conclusions The mediating effect of age on most of the executive functions by measures of processing speed is in agreement with the literature showing a major influence of the slowdown of the processing speed on cognition (Salthouse, 1992; 2000; 2005). The age effect on inhibition did not seem to be mediated neither by the attentional variables nor the speed variables, which is in accordance with Zacks & Hasher’s hypothesis (1988). According to these authors, inhibition would be the first cognitive function to decline with age. [less ▲]

As one of the most important political and religious figures of the mid-fifteenth century, Charles II de Bourbon (1433-1488) has not received the attention he deserves. Charles, archbishop of Lyon (1446), was made cardinal by the pope Sixtus IV in 1476. He was also an important courtier, and a confidant of King Louis XI of France, to whom he was related by marriage. Charles was present at the interview of Kings Louis XI and Edward IV of England in 1475 and in the signature of the peace treaty concluded between them, which formally ended the Hundred Years’ War. Among other posts, Charles held the governorship of Paris and was the head of the King’s Council. Grandson of John the Fearless and cousin to Charles the Bold, he also bore numerous connections with the Burgundian Court and the Southern Netherlands. This paper aims at re-appreciating the artistic patronage of the wealthy cardinal, in spite of the difficulties raised by the paucity of surviving artworks he commissioned. Charles was indeed an important patron, who founded a splendid funerary chapel in Lyon Cathedral, and had the archiepiscopal palace of Lyon built. The cardinal owned a lot of exceptional manuscripts, sculptures and tapestries. Due to his position, Charles may have influenced tastes of Louis XI for the arts, but also the future king Charles VIII’s (Charles de Bourbon was, along with Joan of Valois, Duchess of Bourbon and Edward of Westminster, godparent of the dauphin in 1470).Particular attention will be paid to his collection of tapestries, which have never received detailed analysis. Charles II de Bourbon’s arms (motto, initials, and his device of a flaming sword) appear on only three pieces today: “The Adoration of the Magi”, “The Three Coronations” (both preserved in Sens cathedral), and a scene from the “Story of Hercules” (Mobilier National, Paris). Woven with extremely high quality, probably in the Southern Netherlands, the cardinal’s tapestries are undoubtedly among the finest and most expensive pieces of the 15th century. [less ▲]

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness in the elderly population of industrialized countries. This blindness results from the deterioration of the macula, a small part of the retina specialized for the high-acuity vision. Exudative AMD, called “wet”, is characterized by the formation of new blood vessels growing under the retina according to a process named choroidal neovascularization (CNV). Currently, the aetiology and pathogenesis of AMD remain unclear. Nevertheless, a recent metabolomics study performed on the serum of “wet” AMD patients and on a CNV murine model, that mimics the effect of “wet” AMD, have demonstrated that lactate level is clearly involved in the severity of the pathology as well as the relationship between lactate, CNV and AMD [1]. According to this result, we suggest a new therapeutic approach of AMD based on the normalization of blood lactate level. The modulation of the lactate plasma concentration by treatment of the animals with synthetic compounds and more specifically Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Kinase (PDK) inhibitors significantly decrease the CNV. PDK and its four isoforms (PDK1-4) regulate the activity of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDH), a mitochondrial enzyme that plays a major role in the metabolic pathway of glucose, by reversible phosphorylation. Starting from these results, development of new PDK inhibitors could open the way to innovative treatment opportunities in AMD disease. Different analogues of (R)-3,3,3-trifluoro-2-hydroxy-2-methylpropanamide (fig.1) have been already synthetized and pharmacological evaluation is currently in progress. According to the results obtained, various pharmacomodulations will be investigated. [less ▲]

Western Amazonian languages stand out in showing classifiers that – in addition to the well-established classifier environments – also appear as derivational devices on nouns (Payne 1987; Aikhenvald 2000; Seifart & Payne 2007). Since classifiers are commonly assumed to originate in nouns (Aikhenvald 2000), classifier languages confront us with an analytical problem in the domain of Binominal Naming Constructions (BNCs), i.e. how to distinguish between the derivational use of classifiers on nouns (1)-(2) and noun-noun compounds (3)-(4). The present paper addresses this problem on the basis of primary data collected on Harakmbut (isolate, Peru), e.g. (1) and (3), and Mojeño Trinitario (Arawak, Bolivia), e.g. (2) and (4), two unrelated (and not in contact) Western Amazonian languages. While Mojeño Trinitario will be shown to be a multiple classifier language with an extensive set of classifiers, Harakmbut turns out to show (a small set of) classifiers only, in fewer environments. Yet, both languages will appear to behave strikingly similarly in the domain of BNCs. (1) classifier-derived nouns in Harakmbut a) siro-pi metal-CLF:stick ‘knife’ (cf. For example, noun-noun compounds consist of clear “Thing-roots” (Haspelmath 2012) in both languages, with one element being the morphosyntactic and semantic head. In noun-CLF formations, however, classifiers do not really denote a “thing”, but rather a shape or quality; they do not contain a head. As a factor bearing on this analytical problem, we will show that in both languages the noun/classifier distinction is blurred by the fact that there is a class of nouns that share many features with the canonical classifiers. In both languages, these nouns refer to parts of entities, such as bodyparts, cf. (3b) and (4b), or plant parts. Morphologically, these are bound roots, which require affixation to obtain independent nominal status, specifically possessor prefixes in Mojeño Trinitario and (semantically empty) nominalizing prefixes in Harakmbut. Interestingly, in both languages such N-N compounds as (3b) and (4b) can be used as endocentric compounds in their literal sense, but they can also be used exocentrically to refer to a person whose (physical) characteristics resemble those of the referent of the endocentric compound. In Mojeño Trinitario, such exocentric uses take determiners for human referents, whereas neither component noun refers to a human entity (Harakmbut lacks any formal indication for such uses). More generally, we will examine to what extent these bound nouns can be analysed as incipient classifiers, and formulate diachronic hypotheses informed by our analysis of BNCs. [less ▲]

Background Volumetric absorptive microsampling (VAMS) offers a unique opportunity to collect small and accurate quantities of biological fluids. This sampling technique is of great interest for volume-limited samples and for the collection of multiple samples from the same animal. This serial sample collection may reduce the number of required study animals, thereby fulfilling the three Rs rule (refine, reduce, replace). Here, we demonstrate the applicability of VAMS to study the bioavailability of drug formulations in rats. Methods Four itraconazole-containing formulations were successively administered to rats with a wash-out period of one week. VAMS was used to collect 14 whole blood samples of only 10 μL each within a time frame of 48 hours after administration of the different drug formulations. Particular attention was paid to sample preparation and stability. The extraction of itraconazole and its main metabolite hydroxy-itraconazole was optimized to provide a high recovery and minimal matrix effects. A developed and validated LC–MS/MS method was used for the quantification of the two compounds. Pharmacokinetic profiles for the different formulations were constructed and compared. Results The stability of itraconazole and hydroxy-itraconazole in dried VAMS samples of whole rat blood could not be guaranteed for more than a day when the samples were stored at room temperature. However, samples were stable for at least two weeks when stored at -80°C after sample preparation. Differences in pharmacokinetic profiles were observed for the tested drug formulations. Whole blood concentrations of itraconazole and its main metabolite were significantly higher after administration of three in-house produced formulations compared to concentrations obtained with a commercially available product. Moreover, these in vivo results could be partly related to in vitro dissolution rates of the various formulations. Conclusions VAMS is an attractive approach for bioavailability studies. Due to the low blood volumes per sampling point, the same rats can be used to compare various drug formulations. Therefore, the number of required animals can be drastically reduced. Moreover, this helps to suppress the inter-individual variability and strengthens the validity of results. [less ▲]

This study aimed to evaluate diurnal methane (CH4) emission dynamics of grazing cattle and highlight their relationships with biotic factors such as the feeding behaviour as well as seasonal changes in pasture characteristics. Existing methods to assess grazing ruminants’ daily CH4 emissions provide useful insights to investigate mitigation strategies relying on feeding and genetic selection. Nonetheless such methods based on tracer gases (SF6) or feeding bins equipped with sniffers (e.g. GreenFeed) can hardly cover diurnal CH4 emission fluctuations which can influence the accuracy of total CH4 production estimations. Previous studies in barns showed that emission dynamics strongly vary during post feeding time, leading to a possible bias in estimates of daily CH4 emissions as high as 100%. To investigate whether such fluctuations are also taking place on pasture, a portable device was designed with infrared CH4 and CO2 sensors measuring concentrations in the exhaled air at a high sampling rate (4 Hz). Six grazing dry red-pied cows were equipped with the device and motion sensors during runs of 24h to monitor CH4 and CO2 emissions and detect their feeding behaviours (grazing, rumination and other behaviours), respectively. This experiment was performed in summer and fall in order to cover seasonal changes in pasture forage quality. Methane emission was estimated from the CH4:CO2 concentration ratio and the metabolic CO2 production of the cows. As for barn studies, variations were observed in total daily CH4 emission due to the seasons and diurnal variations were also observed due to animal behaviours. Relationships between animal feeding behaviour and CH4 emissions patterns on pasture were also unravelled. [less ▲]

Comment amener les futurs-enseignants à innover pour faire face à leurs futurs défis professionnels ? Depuis deux ans, notre formation initiale propose un dispositif ayant pour visée principale de stimuler la créativité des étudiants et, par extension, celle de leurs futurs élèves. Actuellement, la créativité n’apparait pas explicitement dans le référentiel de compétences des enseignants en Belgique francophone (2000). Nous y voyons néanmoins une compétence professionnelle indispensable à développer à l’heure où l’innovation est aussi au centre des préoccupations des acteurs de l’éducation. Un processus créatif est donc mené au sein d’activités visant à la fois une meilleure compréhension du concept et son appropriation en tant que démarche fonctionnelle. Les futurs-enseignants y développent des pistes d’innovations pédagogiques en référence aux étapes d’un modèle inspiré du Creative Problem Solving (Osborn et Parnes, 1926). Pour la seconde année consécutive, c’est donc la capacité à innover de nos étudiants que nous souhaitons développer. La créativité étant le moyen choisi pour y parvenir, l’hypothèse principale que nous allons vérifier suite aux ajustements qui ont suivi notre première analyse (2015-2016) est la suivante : Le dispositif permet aux étudiants de faire évoluer leurs représentations du métier en y intégrant le processus créatif comme démarche fonctionnelle. The management of patron information within Alma is primarily reliant on two systems – the creation and updating of patron information by an external system such as student management or HR systems or internally within Alma itself. A recent survey of the Alma community indicated the majority of institutions utilize a mixture of these external and internal processes. In addition to providing access to affiliated staff and students more than 89% of institutions responded that they provided user accounts to non-affiliated users such as the general public, members of other academic institutions, alumni, etc. Providing authenticated access to library services for the latter group relies heavily on Alma for password management. This presentation will outline the processes in place at the University of Otago and at the University of Liège for managing and authenticating non-institutional users and the possible effect of Ex Libris' proposed changes to internal authentication. Introduction Drug administration is the act nurses most frequently do. However, 50% of errors occur during administration. The damage these errors causes to patients, results in excess mortality rates and health care costs, hence leading to a major public health problem. Therefore, it is advisable to consider the training of future nurses on the practice of this delicate act. The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of teaching by simulation combined with the internship on the safety administration of intravenous drugs by nursing students, compared to just the internship alone. Material and method A selection of 99 students from the bachelors’ block two of the Namur-Liege-Luxembourg Higher Institute of Nursing met the inclusion criteria under consideration. They were divided into two groups, one experimental group which participated in a simulation session and a control group, the latter did not participate in the simulation session. At the start of the research, all students were assessed by an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) with the theme of modifying infusion and syringe flow rates. They were also asked to complete a questionnaire concerning their knowledge and self-efficacy feeling related to drug administration. The experimental group then participated in the simulation sessions. The experimental group and the control group also went into four weeks of training in medical or surgical services before participating in the second stage of the study. The latter consisted of the same tests and questionnaires as stage one of the study. The evolution of the results of the two groups was first observed separately before being compared. Results The majority of the results shows that the simulation improves, in a way significantly more important than the clinical course, the acquisition of skills and knowledge, as well as the feeling of self-efficacy in drug administration. On the other hand, the assessment of the level of stress linked to drug administration and the professional attitude evaluated during the OSCE were not significantly more improved by the simulation than by the training alone (stress: p-value = 0.8269, professional attitude = 0.9857). Conclusions For the students in the experimental group, the simulation showed a positive impact on the skills, knowledge and feeling of self-efficacy associated with drug administration. Changes and continuation of the study would make it possible to go further in the generalization of results, in the evaluation of learning outcomes, and to attest to their sustainability. [less ▲]

En tant que jeune maître-assistant chargé de la formation pédagogique des futurs enseignants du secondaire à la Haute Ecole de la Ville de Liège (Belgique), j’accorde beaucoup d’importance à la construction par les étudiants de savoirs et compétences solidement ancrés et utiles à l’exercice de leur futur métier. Il y a deux ans, ma participation au Master de spécialisation en pédagogie de l’enseignement supérieur (Formasup, Université de Liège) m’a donné l’occasion d’analyser mes pratiques d’enseignement à la lumière de mes valeurs « constructivistes ». J’ai alors pu constater que le dispositif qui vise le développement de compétences de planification pédagogique par les étudiants de BAC1 n’était pas tout à fait en phase avec ces valeurs. Ce constat m’a amené à revoir le dispositif pour davantage solliciter l’engagement et la réflexion des étudiants par rapport aux « invariants opératoires » associés à la planification. Conformément à l’approche SoTL prônée par Formasup, j’ai mené une recherche en classe afin d’étudier les effets du dispositif régulé sur la qualité d’apprentissage et la motivation de mes étudiants. Cette recherche m’a permis de confirmer que le dispositif permettait effectivement aux étudiants de s’approprier les invariants opératoires de planification et, par le processus de contextualisation – décontextualisation – recontextualisation au cœur du dispositif, d’appliquer ceux-ci à des situations de plus en plus proches du futur contexte professionnel. La recherche a montré aussi que l’approche réflexive que je souhaitais voir mes étudiants adopter n’est pas encore suffisamment soutenue par le dispositif qui doit encore être amélioré à cet égard. The notion of ‘basic vocabulary’ is associated with the name of Morris Swadesh, who proposed a list of 200 (and later 100) items. These lists, widely used in historical and comparative linguistics, were based on intuition rather than on empirical research. More recently, however, the Leipzig Loanword Typology Project conducted a cross-linguistic survey of loanwords (Haspelmath & Tadmor 2009). One of the results is a 100-item list of basic vocabulary items — the ‘Leipzig-Jakarta list of basic vocabulary.’ This list is the product of four factors, computed for a database of 1440 meanings in 41 languages: borrowability, representation in the database, analyzability / simplicity, and age. As Tadmor (2009) states, this is the first list of basic vocabulary items based on extensive cross-linguistic comparison, and it constitutes a ‘full-fledged basic vocabulary’ that ‘comprises the notions normally associated with this concept: stability (our age score), universality (our representation score) and simplicity (our analyzability score), as well as resistance to borrowing (our unborrowed score)’ (2009: 68). In this talk, we examine this list of 100 meanings in order to evaluate the influence of Greek (Indo- European) on the basic vocabulary of Coptic (Afroasiatic), which shows massive lexical borrowing. First, Coptic data were collected from Crum (1939) for four dialects: Sahidic, Bohairic, Fayyumic, and Akhmimic. Additionally, a questionnaire was submitted to specialists in order to detect Greek loanwords that also lexicalized these meanings. Furthermore, we used etymological dictionaries (Černý 1976; Westendorf 1977; Vycichl 1983) in order to attribute an age score (from 0 = Greek loanword to 4 = Old Egyptian) to the lexemes at two levels: the formal level (when is the word first attested in Ancient Egyptian) and the semantic level (when is the meaning attested in Coptic first associated with this word). As a result of this study, we (1) evaluate the influence of Greek on the basic vocabulary of the main Coptic dialects, (2) describe the basic vocabulary of Coptic dialects independently and to observe how they differ from one another, (3) produce a first estimate of the rate of change in basic vocabularies over the course of Egyptian as a whole. Some of our main findings are as follows: 233 items lexicalize the 100 meanings. Of these, nearly half are attested already in the oldest Egyptian texts; a major peak in lexical replacement is around 1500 BCE, a time of considerable political and cultural upheaval in Egypt. Rates of lexical change do not always correspond to neat semantic categories: while body part terms were generally replaced, semantic categories like perception show heterogeneity (e.g., the verb ‘to hear’ remained throughout the entire history of Egyptian, while the verb ‘to see’ was replaced several times; similarly, ‘to come’ remained stable, while ‘to go’ was replaced several times). All in all, very few of the meanings on the Leipzig-Jakarta list are lexicalized by loanwords in Coptic, and no meanings show complete replacement of a native word by a loanword. This study has broader methodological implications. One is the clear distinction between (and possible independence of) overall lexical borrowing and borrowing of basic vocabulary: while Coptic borrowed an estimated 5000 lexical items (types), with a basic vocabulary borrowing score of 7.53, it is only a low-to-middle borrower in terms of basic vocabulary (cf. Fig. 1). The comparison of scores in overall borrowing vs. borrowing of basic vocabulary raises important questions about the types of socio-historical contact situations that lead to these different situations. Local polarization of a magnetic layer, a well-known method for storing information, has found its place in numerous applications such as the popular magnetic drawing board toy or the widespread credit cards and computer hard drives. Here we experimentally show that a similar principle can be applied for imprinting the trajectory of quantum units of flux (vortices), travelling in a superconducting film (Nb), into a soft magnetic layer of permalloy (Py). In full analogy with the magnetic drawing board, vortices act as tiny magnetic scribers leaving a wake of polarized magnetic media in the Py board. The mutual interaction between superconducting vortices and ferromagnetic domains has been investigated by the magneto-optical imaging technique. For thick Py layers, the stripe magnetic domain pattern guides both the smooth magnetic flux penetration as well as the abrupt vortex avalanches in the Nb film. It is however in thin Py layers without stripe domains where superconducting vortices leave the clearest imprints of locally polarized magnetic moment along their paths. In all cases, we observe that the flux is delayed at the border of the magnetic layer. Our findings open the quest for optimizing magnetic recording of superconducting vortex trajectories. [less ▲]

The local buckling capacity of fire exposed thin-walled steel cross sections is affected by the reduction in strength and stiffness due to elevated temperatures and the amplitude of the initial local imperfections. Several researchers have proposed design methods to calculate the capacity of the plates (i.e. web and flanges) that compose these steel members at elevated temperatures, but they used different shapes of steel plates (sides ratio a/b) and different amplitudes of local imperfections. This variability in hypotheses happens because there is no clear provision defining the numerical modeling procedure for fire design of steel plates in the codes (European or US). According to the theory of perfect plates, the critical load depends of the shape of the rectangular plate (e.g. the sides ratio a/b) and the corresponding buckling mode (number of half waves), the boundary and the loading conditions. This paper reviews the existing code provisions and compares the existing design models and their assumptions for thin-walled steel cross sections. Elements of the theory of perfect plates are presented. Parametric finite element analyses are then conducted on isolated steel plates at elevated temperatures to investigate the effect of the plate shape (a/b ratio) and imperfections (amplitude and number of half wave lengths). From the analysis, the governing parameter will be estimated (a/b vs imperfections) for simulation of isolated flanges and webs. Finally, recommendations for the numerical modeling of steel plates at elevated temperatures are proposed. [less ▲]

In recent years, the “Front National” (FN) in France has claimed to be the “defender of the people” and “guarantor of their interests”. In 2017, the campaign slogan of Marine Le Pen, party leader and candidate in the presidential election, was “in the name of the people”. In Austria, the “Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs” (FPÖ) stood as the “voice of the oppressed majority”. The party is demanding “a direct democracy in order to let the people speak”. These elements lead us to question the notion of “the people”. How should we define “the people”? What reality does it refer to? What are the underlying political and ideological issues? Firstly, to answer this question, I aim to clarify the term “the people” in populist rhetoric. The FN and the FPÖ are often described as “far-right parties”. However, many scholars also refer to them as “populist parties”. These terms clearly need explaining. Secondly, this work will analyse the political discourse of the FN and the FPÖ. The focus will be on the political programmes and oral communication coming from their principal representatives. This analysis is discursive. It isn’t an examination of the work performed by party supporters or members (parliamentary work, action in local authorities, etc.). Apparently, the rhetoric from both parties is structured around two dichotomies: 1) the removal of social boundaries in favour of a people/elite opposition; 2) the affirmation of cultural boundaries in favour of an opposition between natives to a country and foreigners. I will explain why these notions of social and cultural boundaries have a prominent place in rhetoric in line with populist theory. The desire to suppress social boundaries, allows us to identity a first issue: sovereignty. The affirmation of cultural boundaries illustrates a second issue: unity. Finally, a third issue is transmitted through the notion of sovereignty and unity: identity. To conclude, I will return to the classification of the “Front National” and the “Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs” as “right-wing-populist” parties. I will end by answering the question: “who are ‘the people’”? This will explain why populist rhetoric responds to a feeling of unease within society and, more generally, within Western democracies. Abstract: A study was carried out to evaluate the performances of colored spirulina (Spirulina platensis) soluble proteins fractions as surfactants at water/n-dodecane interface using a drop volume tensiometer. Also the mechanical behavior at this interface were studied via an automated drop tensiometer. Various concentrations (0.1%; 0.3% and 0.5% (w/w)) and pH levels (native, 3 and 5) were tested. Results showed that the interfacial tension decay increased with increased protein concentration. Also, at 0.3% (w/w) colored protein in the aqueous phase there were no significant difference in interfacial tension decay between the native pH and the pH3 levels while at pH5 the surface tension decay was greater. The viscoelastic moduli and the equilibrium interfacial tension of the fractions suspensions also decreased with concentration. [less ▲]

Semantic maps aim at detecting cross-linguistic regularities and recurrent patterns in semantic structure (Haspelmath 2003). This method was initially applied to the grammatical domain, mostly in a synchronic perspective (with some exceptions, see, e.g., van der Auwera & Plungian 1998). Recent research, however, has drawn attention to the lexical domain, showing that the model can also include lexical semantics (see, e.g., François 2008). Intimately related to the semantic map method has been the issue of finding appropriate ways of creating those maps and of capturing visually the semantic regularities. Up until recently, the maps were plotted and drawn manually. However, Regier et al. (2013) showed that a good approximation algorithm exists for inferring semantic maps based on polysemy data. Elaborating on their method, this paper aims to demonstrate that information about the directionality and the weight of the edges can be automatically added, thereby providing valuable information regarding the paths of semantic extensions and their frequency. In order to illustrate the method, we take the example of the semantic extension of time-related lexemes (e.g. TIME, HOUR, SEASON, DAY) in Ancient Greek (8th – 1st c. BC) and Ancient Egyptian – Coptic (26th c. BC – 10th c. AD). Both languages give access to significant diachronic material, allowing us to trace long term processes of semantic change. The results of our diachronic investigations are then checked against databases giving information on synchronic polysemies (e.g., List et al. 2014). In doing so, we also assess the adequacy of the use of polysemy as a tool to investigate semantic change. [less ▲]

In “Knowledge in policy”, Freeman and Sturdy propose a phenomenology with the aim of “knowing knowledge” (Freeman & Sturdy, 2014, p. 2). Knowledge can have different forms called “inscribed”, “embodied” and “enacted”. This framework is presented as a way to categorize and describe the form, the circulation and the transformation of knowledge in policymaking. In this paper, we intend to focus on inscribed knowledge, and particularly on documents conceived as essential artefacts of public policies (Freeman & Maybin, 2011). Freeman and Sturdy defined inscribed knowledge as “written down in texts, or represented in pictures and diagrams; or it may be incorporated into instruments, tools and machines, among other things”(Freeman & Sturdy, 2014, p. 10). This form of knowledge is particularly “stable”, “easily reproducible” and “highly mobile” so “it can be communicated or made available to many different individuals separated in time and/or space”(Freeman & Sturdy, 2014, p. 10). This statement draws from works in sociology of science and technology. These works, especially Latour’s (1987) studies of the laboratory work and Law's (1986) analysis of control at distance particularly emphasize the power of inscriptions in constraining social action over time and space. Through the analysis of the implementation of two policy plans in the Belgian healthcare sector, we question and put the role of inscriptions in perspective with moments of enactment, by focusing on meetings. We intend to show that some documents are crucial at particular moments and lose value at other moments. In the same vein, we also aim to show the importance of iteration, moments, duration, and rhythms in public action. By doing so, we show how the public policy itself is transformed through time, documents and meetings. We address this issue by drawing on two PhD researches focusing on the devising and implementation of the policy plans mentioned above. By relying on interviews, observations and document analysis, we describe the policy strategies inscribed in documents as well as key moments of both documents’ trajectories. In so doing, we emphasise that documents and meetings articulate with each other in an iterative process that in turn transforms the public policies themselves. [less ▲]

Quaternary prevention (P4), born from a reflection on the doctor-patient relationship, began as an answer of family doctors facing overmedicalization. It aims to protect the patient or population against the danger of medicine. Harmful effects can appear with preventive activities (example: prostate cancer screening by PSA) as well as by therapeutic interventions (example: disruptive medicine). P4 promoted by the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) is practiced in different ways around the world through the activity of the WONCA Special Interest Group on Quaternary Prevention and Overmedicalisation (P4&O). There are multiple initiatives and backgrounds of P4. All these multiple initiatives that lead to P4 have their origin in denouncing the inadequacies of the Hegemonic Medical Model and the excesses perpetrated in the pursuit of profit. There are many schools of thought that try to solve this situation, such as "Medicines Based on ..." These contributions are valuable but usually point to a single dimension of the problem so they do not change the situation too much. The P4, however, have understood the centrality of the political and economic dimensions and, that is why, P4 has become a movement. P4 has understood that the root causes far exceed the limits of medicine, have understood that the problem includes ethical, political, economic and epistemological aspects of medicine. It is for this reason that the definition of P4 has shifted to the function of foundational idea since the movement that has been generated around this concept has surpassed this initial definition centered in a, yet complex, but still medical vision. P4 has understood that a new model of medicine and a new pact with society is necessary. P4 is a counter-hegemonic movement with predominant development in peripheral countries. This movement includes many other perspectives developed in the central countries but is the only one that has an ideological position that discusses the current paradigm of medicine that legitimates the same causes that give rise to P4, proposing to think a new way of practice the medicine that includes Ethical values, other forms of knowledge and the return to human medicine for humans with place for uncertainty, compassion, the encounter between people and non-commodified. Justice in health care is a central aspect of this new way of conceiving the medicine that we propose. Remember what Rudolf Virchow said in the nineteenth century "Physicians are the natural advocates of the poor and social problems fall largely under their jurisdiction. Medicine is a social science, and politics is nothing more than medicine in large scale". We must reformulate our contract with society and for this we must be very clear that our loyalty must always be with the sick, the poor and those who are weak. For this new contract we must also take into account the magnitude of the power that has been given to us and to live up to such responsibility. In the Rio manifesto (2016) we propose to “Avoid and denounce the naturalization of: hunger, exclusion, manipulation, inequality, violence, racism, exploitation, which harm health more than "diseases"” . Hybrid Fire Testing (HFT) is a technique that allows assessing experimentally the fire performance of a structural element under real boundary conditions that capture the effect of the surrounding structure. To enable HFT, there is a need for a method that is unconditionally stable, ensures equilibrium and compatibility at the interface and captures the global behaviour of the analysed structure. A few attempts at conducting HFT have been described in the literature, but it can be shown, based on the analytical study of a simple one degree-of-freedom elastic system, that the considered method was fundamentally unstable in certain configurations which depend on the relative stiffness between the two substructures, but which cannot be easily predicted in advance. In this paper, a new method is introduced to overcome the stability problem and it is shown through analytical developments and applicative examples that the stability of the new method does not depend on the stiffness ratio between the two substructures. The new method is applied in a virtual hybrid test on a 2D reinforced concrete beam part of a moment resisting frame, showing that stability, equilibrium and compatibility are ensured on the considered multiple degree-of-freedom system. Besides, the virtual HFT succeeds in reproducing the global behaviour of the analysed structure. The method development and implementation in a virtual (numerical) setting is described, the next step being its implementation in a real (laboratory) hybrid test. [less ▲]

Performance-based structural fire design provides a rational methodology for designing modern buildings with cost-effective solutions. However, in the United States, fire design still largely relies on design at the component level using prescriptive approaches. With performance-based approaches, there is an opportunity to benefit from increased flexibility and reduced cost in the design, but these advantages need to be explicitly described and disseminated to promote this shift in paradigm. In this paper, a comparative analysis is conducted on multi-story steel-concrete buildings designed following performance-based and U.S. prescriptive approaches. The steel-concrete composite structure allows taking advantage of tensile membrane action in the slab during fire, and therefore removing the fire protection on secondary beam elements. The nonlinear finite element software SAFIR is used to model the behavior of the buildings under the standard ASTM fire and a natural fire determined using the two-zone fire model CFAST. The numerical simulations show that performance-based design can be used to achieve the required level of safety currently enforced in the U.S. prescriptive guidelines, while providing an opportunity for cost reduction in fire protection material. High strength concrete (HSC) provides several advantages over normal strength concrete (NSC) and is being used in multi-story buildings for reducing the dimensions of the columns sections and increasing the net marketable area. However, upgrading of concrete strength class in a building may affect the fire performance, due to higher rates of strength loss with temperature and higher susceptibility to spalling of HSC compared with NSC. Reduction of columns sections also leads to increased member slenderness and faster temperature increase in the section core. These detrimental effects are well known, but their impact on fire performance of structures has not been established in terms of comparative advantage between NSC and HSC. In other words, it is not clear whether the consideration of fire resistance limits the opportunities for use of HSC for reducing the dimensions of columns sections in multi-story buildings. This research aims to address this question by comparing the fire behaviour of reinforced concrete columns made of NSC and HSC using nonlinear finite element modelling. The evolution of load bearing capacity of the columns is established as a function of the fire exposure duration. A 15-story car park structure is adopted as a case study with alternative designs for the columns based on strength classes ranging from C30 to C90. Results show that, although the replacement of NSC by HSC accelerates the reduction rate of columns capacity under fire, the columns generally have significant reserves in resistance leading to sufficient fire resistance. This study gives an insight into the impact of replacing stocky sections in NSC by more slender sections in HSC on fire resistance rating for multi-story structures. [less ▲]

The thermochemical method called “biomass gasification” is generating emphatic interest for the production of bio-Syngas (CO+H2) since this process presents the advantage of being renewable without emitting CO2. However, in practical applications, there are still some technical problems due to high concentration of tars in the outlet gas, which can condensate and clog the pipes. Previous studies have highlighted the fact that the tar elimination via catalytic reforming seem to be the more practical and economical solution. Reforming catalysts present the following properties : a tailored mesoporous texture for the support and the high dispersion of active sites like metallic nanoparticles (Ni, Pd, Fe,…) [1]. In this work, Ni based alumina catalysts and doped with a second metal (Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo) are synthesized by an aqueous sol-gel process. [less ▲]

Research on enfranchisement of EU citizens in EP elections has explained its original design (Lodge 1982; Closa 1992) and its national implementation (Herman 1979; Bieber 1984; Duff 1994). A number of other regional organizations have created supranational parliaments and some studies have explained the logic behind their creation (Malamud and Sousa 2007; Dri 2010). In some cases, their institutionalization also led to the introduction of the direct election of the members of these parliamentary assemblies. Yet, this enfranchisement process at the supranational level remains largely unexplored, as it happens for the variance in its design across different regional organizations and, within these, of the variances in implementation of these electoral rights. This paper aims to fill this gap by explaining the reasons for the introduction of electoral rights and their uneven implementation across six supranational parliaments holding direct elections. The paper draws on the diffusion theory which allows identifying the origin of a given institution and the mechanisms for its transference, as well as the elements explaining variance in its incorporation to receiving contexts. The first part of the paper applies a plausibility probe of the diffusion theory to the case of electoral rights, whereas the second part of the paper seeks to explain the patterns of decoupling in citizens’ enfranchisement at the supranational level (i.e. the adjustment of the diffused institution of directly elected parliaments to the receiving environment of the Member States). During the past few years, tissue engineering has become one of the most promising techniques to maintain, improve, or reconstruct human tissue, even complete human organs. This solution is frequently based on the realization of temporary porous matrices, also called "scaffolds". Scaffolds are highly porous matrices notably designed to structure the development of cells, but also to guarantee the function of the implant during the regeneration process. Several materials have been proposed for the conception of scaffold. These have to meet strict criteria regarding biocompatibility, degradability, mechanical and surface properties. As a result of their biomimetism, bioceramics, like hydroxyapatite (Ca5(PO4)3(OH)), have been widely developed during the past few years for bone reconstruction. The aim of this study is the optimization of the synthesis of hydroxyapatite by sol-gel process to be used in the conception of scaffold for bone reconstruction application. In this optic, powder obtained from two synthesis processes (wet precipitation and sol-gel process) were compared with commercial hydroxyapatite. For wet precipitation process, calcium nitrate and phosphoric acid were used as reagent. For sol-gel process, calcium acetate was used as the source of calcium and triethylphosphate as the source of phosphate. Reagents were mixed and the solution was aged. The powder was then dried and sintered. Finally, particles were washed in HCl to remove CaO and then dried. Those new materials were characterized, particularly in terms of chemical composition (XRD, FTIR), crystallinity (XRD), morphology (SEM, TEM), size (TEM, DLS) and Ca/P ratio (EDX). [less ▲]

The use of sol-gel coating on graphite substrates has sucessfuly been done. In particular, in the field of metal matrix composites, some authors state that the use and cure of TEOS sol-gel on carbon based fibres may improve the liquid magnesium infiltration. The described mechanism is the lowering of the liquid/solid contact angle under some specific conditions of time and temperature by the occurrence of a metal-oxide exothermal chemical reaction. Furthermore the application of silica based sol-gels on carbon fibres in order to control the medium to high temperature oxidation of fibres preforms is less investigated. The primary objective is to understand more deeply the oxidation of some uncoated fibres by the comparison of ESEM observations to TGA/ATD curves. The secondary objective is to formulate and coat a TEOS based sol-gel on T300 carbon fibres and to evaluate the new oxidation behaviour. The ternary objective is to measure in a simple way the gain of oxidation resistance of some coated fibres. [less ▲]

The local buckling capacity of fire exposed thin-walled steel cross sections is affected by the reduction in strength and stiffness due to elevated temperatures and by the amplitude of the initial local imperfections. Several researchers have proposed design methods to calculate the capacity of these steel members at elevated temperatures, but they used different methodologies and different amplitude of local imperfections in the extensive numerical analyses that are typically at the base of these methods. This variability in hypotheses happens because there is no clear provision defining the local imperfection amplitude for fire design in the codes (European or US). EN 1993-1-5 proposes amplitude values of local imperfections for ambient temperature design, while EN 1090-2 defines a -different- maximum allowed size of fabrication tolerance during production. Meanwhile, other sizes of local imperfections have also been proposed in the literature, with values different than those from EN 1993-1-5 and EN 1090-2. This paper reviews the existing code provisions and compares the existing design models and their assumptions for thin-walled steel cross sections. Finite element analyses are then conducted on isolated steel plates at elevated temperatures to investigate the effect of local imperfections. Finally, specific amplitude of local imperfections is proposed for fire design of thin-walled steel members. [less ▲]

The design of groundwater heat pumps requires a good understanding of the aquifer and heat flow conditions. Issues of short-circuit or recycling between cold and hot wells have to be carefully considered. Surface geophysical methods allow monitoring subsurface processes without additional perturbations of the medium. Within available methods, the electrical resistivity imagery (ERI) applied in time-lapse (TL) is appropriate. Here, we monitored with ERI and distributed temperature sensors (DTS) a heat plume propagation during an experiment of hot water injection in a shallow aquifer. DTS and TL ERI measurements acquired from two boreholes provide a local estimate of the heat propagation through the medium. TL ERI were also performed from a grid at surface to follow the 3D plume shape formation and evolution through time. The different complementary data validate the potential of surface TL ERI for monitoring in 3D the behavior of shallow heat plumes. ERI highlight the heterogeneity of the aquifer by distinguishing regions with higher or lower hydraulic conductivity. In the higher hydraulic conductivity zone, the heat might be evacuated through water flow, while in the lower hydraulic conductivity area heat storage is achievable. Thus, in that last region the plume temperature decreases progressively with time. [less ▲]
