Peter Carey’s recent novel shares the concern with ‘unoriginality’ which has become a hallmark of his later fiction. It can actually be argued that, through this new variation on a known theme, he purports to move beyond the clichéd postmodern paradox that authenticities – whether psychological or aesthetic – are always essentially made up, in order to consider the matter from another angle, pondering the perilous moment when an overtly fabricated object somehow mysteriously springs to life. If, as the title suggests, even our most personal emotions can be rationalized in terms of chemical reactions, why then could we not pursue a reverse path of investigation and envisage material reality as the source providing the components for the creation of spirit? This is the subjective context in which the protagonist Catherine, who works as a horologist (clockwork expert) in a London museum, must reconstruct a nineteenth-century mechanical swan suspected by some to be harbouring the soul of its original maker. Interestingly Catherine, herself a die-hard rationalist, finds herself shaken by a devastating bereavement which makes her unusually open to any form of consolation – including the self-indulgence of nostalgia, but also of cocaine and alcohol – which is why she will whole-heartedly embrace the welcome distraction offered by her work of mechanical reconstruction. As part of her attempt to understand the structure of the automaton, she feels that she must immerse herself in the diaries left behind by the commissioner of the work, an Englishman named Henry Brandling animated by his faith that the elaborate toy may release enough energy in his consumptive son, Percy, to save him from his otherwise lethal condition. Thus Carey creates an opening into the rationalist fabric of his protagonist’s present, allowing her to entertain anachronistic fantasies about the life-saving (let alone life-giving) properties of true art. Inasmuch as Catherine’s perusal of the diaries eventually facilitates a circuitous confrontation of her own grief, so that her excursions into the past serve to shore up her fragile sense of a future, the text appears to vindicate its own fantastic claims about the demiurgic, or at least redemptive, powers of art. Perhaps predictably, some reviewers balked in the face of this species of self-promotion, repeating the oft-expressed view that Carey’s fiction, in view of its deliberate straining of the laws of credibility, finally fails to emerge from an enmeshment in its own favoured themes of forgery and imitative inadequacy. The ultimate question asked by the work is then whether it must be seen to be equal to its own promise of transcendence. The present paper, by way of its own descent into the past (and particularly through a comparison with My Life as a Fake which rehearses similar themes), will try to provide an answer, notably by circumscribing the intention of a text in which metafiction assumes a metaphysical dimension possibly unique in Carey’s corpus. Jhumpa Lahiri’s work is unusual for the ways in which it challenges the interlocked ‘matrophobic’ and assimilationist streaks at play in US ethnic and South Asian American literature. Taking its cue from Marianne Hirsch, this chapter examines how Lahiri’s ‘mother-friendly’ versions of the mother-daughter relationship have the potential to complicate the predetermined scripts pertaining to representations of the Indian-American diaspora as a ‘model diaspora’ by the homeland and a ‘model minority’ by the US, while opening new gendered vistas on silenced histories. Belgium and the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg show surprising geological diversity over their small combined area of 33,114 km2. Almost all types of sedimentary rocks crop out and are generally preserved along well-described and easily accessible sections or in quarries. Several sections are known worldwide and are visited for stratigraphic or sedimentological purposes. Magmatic rocks are not abundant and metamorphic rocks are restricted to slates. The stratigraphic scale ranges from the Cambrian to the Quaternary, which translates to a half billion years of Earth history. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the different stratigraphic units, starting from the oldest and ending with the youngest. Modern stratigraphic schemes highlight formations’ geometries and interrelations. Some of the most remarkable units are further detailed. The two orogenic phases that shaped the Lower Paleozoic inliers and the Devonian-Carboniferous faulted and folded belt, i.e. the Caledonian and Variscan orogeny, are also addressed. [less ▲]

As Paul Gilroy points out in The Black Atlantic (1993), a comparative approach to the African and Jewish Diasporas, in spite of possible pitfalls, is likely to lead to a better understanding of modernity, characterized as it is by displacements but also by a propensity to discriminate against the ‘Other’. Several Caribbean authors have suggested in their writing parallels between the African and Jewish experiences of exclusion and extermination, between slavery and the Holocaust. This is especially the case with a generation of writers born in the Caribbean in the two decades after the Second World War and now based in the UK or the USA, such as Michelle Cliff, David Dabydeen, Caryl Phillips, and Lawrence Scott, who have addressed the commonalities between the two diasporas in their fiction and non-fiction. This essay highlights the coherence of these writers’ inclusive remembrance of black and Jewish suffering, and places their vision in the context of their attempts at self-definition, both collective and individual. This Chapter focuses on the question of how to deal with technology. Technology has changed our life’s, it has changed how we communicate with each other, and how we work, and also when and where we work. It is important to understand how and why it has changed our life’s, and what kind of consequences this has. Technology may affect our (mental) health and well-being. In this chapter we present on overview of factors that need to be taken into account when designing technology. First a historic perspective is presented in order to understand the development of technology in the work context. Technology at work is generally believed to help us, but this is not always the case. Technology can make work also complex; it can also lead to health problems, in particular when wrong decisions are made whilst designing technology. A core issue is to what extent people are still in control of technology? This is the lead question to understand how individuals are affected by technology at work, and to know how technology should be handled. [less ▲]

This paper aims to discuss some aspects of the Marty–Husserl debate about grammar. My suggestion is that the debate is first of all an epistemological debate, that is, a debate about what a priori knowledge is and how it is acquired. The key opposition is between Marty’s Brentanian notion of ‘analytic intuition’ and Husserl’s Bolzanian notion of ideation. As I will argue, the underlying issue is the possibility of a psychological a priori. On the one hand, analytic intuition provides the psychologist with a priori knowledge about empirical facts. On the other hand, ideation provides the logician with entities that are disconnected from empirical facts—entities which are ‘purely logical’. I conclude with some brief remarks on the Brentanian background of both conceptions. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

At the time of Philip the Good, the Christ’s figure is used by courtly writers as the ultimate argument to convince of the merits of ducal policy. In the Burgundian Mirrors of Princes, Jesus shows the moral path of government that the duke must follow in order to be considered as a good ruler. In the historiography, he helps to demonstrate that the ducal policy serves a very saint and Christian purpose. In political treatises, he justifies the Burgundian power and, most of all, the duke’s institutions. In other words, Jesus Christ is a crucial reference in a process of accumulation of legitimacy for the state built by Philip the Good at the very end of Middle Ages. [less ▲]

In this chapter, I explore different aspects of the variability ‘inherent to human languages’ as it manifests itself in the corpus of pre-Demotic texts from Ancient Egypt. More specifically, I adopt a sociolinguistic perspective and describe the types of impact that extra-linguistic factors have had on the written performance in this specific socio-cultural setting. The aim of this chapter is to investigate diaphasic variation in the texts written by the Deir el-Medina scribe Amennakhte son of Ipuy in New Kingdom Egypt (ca. 1150 BCE) by analysing the graphemic and linguistic features of the registers used by this individual when writing texts belonging to different genres. The registers are conceived here as selections operating within the scribal repertoire. At an empirical level, this study is intended as a first step towards a comprehensive description of the types of linguistic variation found within the written production of the Deir el-Medina community in New Kingdom Egypt (ca. 1500–1050 BCE). At a more methodological level, as a case study testing the applicability of some historical sociolinguistic methods in the field of Ancient Egyptian, which could ultimately result in refining our approach to its diachrony. This paper studies the relationships between immigra- tion and the welfare state in Spain from a triple per- spective. First, the role social bene ts may have had on the Spanish immigrant experience as a pull factor is analysed. The paper goes on to study the way immi- gration can affect the maintenance of the welfare state, investigating both the possible effects of the increased ethnic, linguistic and cultural diversity on the support of the national population for the welfare state, as well as its effect on social spending in terms of monetary and health bene ts. Lastly, and changing perspective, the contribution of immigration to the maintenance of the private market for welfare services is assessed, espe- cially in terms of caring for dependents. [less ▲]
