Cobalt mediated radical polymerization (CMRP) of vinyl acetate (VAc) follows a reversible termination mechanism when initiated from a preformed alkyl-cobalt(III) complex. In these particular conditions, CMRP functions as a stable free radical process and fine tuning of the Co-C bond strength becomes crucial. Increase of temperature and addition of molecules, such as water, dimethylformamide and dimethylsulfoxide, able to coordinate the cobalt complex appeared as efficient strategies to weaken the Co-C bond and thus to speed up the polymerization while maintaining a very good control of the VAc polymerization. The key role of metal-coordination was investigated by kinetic measurements combined with DFT calculations. [less ▲]

Opening and closing operators play an important role in the field of mathematical morphology, mainly because of their useful property of idempotence, which is similar to the notion of ideal filter in linear filtering. From a theoretical point of view, the study of openings has focused on the algebraic characterization of the operators themselves. Morphological filters have been studied for more than 30 years; the effects of the first filters (erosions, openings, and so on) are known in depth. In discussing the effects of a filter, it is not only the operator that is studied but also its relationship with the processed function or image and, in the particular case of mathematical morphology, the structuring element. In addition, there are several approaches to this analysis. For example, the analysis can consider the whole function or some subparts of the function, as in Van Droogenbroeck and Buckley (2005), who introduced the notion of morphological anchors. Anchors were defined in the context of morphological openings, as defined by the cascade of an erosion followed by a dilation. The extension to other kinds of openings is not straightforward. Despite the fact that all morphological openings induce the appearance of anchors, some opening operators (like the quantization opening defined in this chapter) might have no anchors. This chapter presents the theory of anchors related to morphological erosions and openings, and establishes some properties for the extended scope of algebraic openings. It is shown under which circumstances anchors exist for algebraic openings and how to locate some anchors; for example, it suffices for an opening to be spatial or shift-invariant to guarantee the existence of anchors. As for morphological openings, the existence of anchors may help clarify some algorithms or lead to new algorithms to compute algebraic openings. [less ▲]

Today, we can avail of comprehensive information on the molecular mechanisms of apoptosis signaling that was gathered during decades of intense research. This chapter presents how mathematical approaches in the field of cellular signaling are used to integrate this complex and heterogeneous information into computational models with the aim to elucidate the functional properties of apopto- tic signaling networks. Mathematical modeling allows one to describe properties of signaling systems that emanate from the interplay of the system’s individual compo- nents and has a longstanding and successful history in the fields of physics, chemistry, and their applied engineering sciences. Systems analyses can serve to describe and identify signaling dynamics, molecular switches, thresholds, and feedback regulatory mechanisms and allow systems properties such as stability and robustness toward external perturbations to be identified. Crucially, systems analyses can also serve to generate novel qualitative and quantitative research hypotheses, which in turn allow for more focused experimental research approaches. This chapter provides a concise and critical overview on the current state of systems biology in the field of apoptotic signaling and the methodology employed. [less ▲]

This paper introduces a new methodology to optimize the allocation of financial assets. The objective of the model is to maximize the expected return of the portfolio under constraints limiting its Value-at-Risk. The assets could consist in stocks as well as options. We rely on a flexible scenario tree approach to represent the future prices. In order to reduce the number of leaves and maintain the model tractable, stocks prices are obtained through the Fama & French empirical asset pricing model. Experiments on historical data are performed to illustrate the method and show the performance of the approach. Different strategies are compared: considering various market distributions, several factor models and a few portfolio hypothesis. [less ▲]

This chapter discusses short-circuit oscillations in power lines. Short-circuit currents generate electromagnetic forces on the conductors, exciting short-circuit oscillations. Since the short-circuit periods are very short, the short-circuit forces in single conductor overhead lines are usually low because of the large phase spacing. However these forces may have considerable impact on distribution lines due to the change in phase spacing during short-circuit occurrences. For bundle conductor lines, the short-circuit forces between subconductors are significantly higher due to the small distance between them. Methods for estimating the compressive forces on bundle conductor spacers or spacer dampers are discussed. [less ▲]

Muscles play a key role in active knee stability. ACL reconstruction induces muscle weakness which justifies strength measurements after surgery. Thigh muscle performances under isokinetic conditions can be measured very accurately. Eccentric measurements could implement classical concentric protocols after ACL reconstruction. In order to protect the graft against excessive loads, we avoid post-operative eccentric testing of the quadriceps in our clinical practice. By contrast, hamstring eccentric evaluation is recommended and shows a discriminant character, in particular in the form of a hamstring ecc / quadriceps conc mixed ratio. [less ▲]

Undoubtedly, hamstring strains have close connections with the eccentric mode of contraction. Several authors have confirmed the discriminating character of the eccentric isokinetic assessment, in particular using a mixed eccentric hamstrings / concentric quadriceps ratio. Low-intensity eccentric contractions promoting healing of good quality are recommended in the early phase of rehabilitation. Subsequently, strengthening exercises at high intensity contractions will be implemented. Tools to be used and specific modalities of the protocols are discussed in this paper. [less ▲]

Lateral epicondylitis represents a common overuse injury caused by repetitive gestures through sports activity, industrial work and hobby activities. In spite of many conservative treatment procedures, prolonged symptoms and relapse are frequently reported. The goal of our study was to compare the outcome of patients performing an adapted isokinetic eccentric training with that of patients receiving a non-strengthening classical rehabilitation. Results, dealing with pain score evaluation, disability questionnaire, muscle strength measurement and ultrasonographic examination, highlight the relevance of implementing isokinetic adapted eccentric training in the management of lateral epicondylitis. Introduction: Joint hypermobility involves an increased range of motion compared to normal amplitudes for the same age, sex and ethnic group. Benign Joint Hypermobility Syndrome (BJHS) affects between 5 and 10% of the Caucasian population but it also concern rare hereditary dystrophies with abnormal collagen structure or metabolism (i.e.: Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)). Patients with hypermobility suffer from joints problems and chronic pain is the most frequently reported symptom. Case Report: An EDS patient presented pain in the right elbow and the right wrist after a season of tennis. Her physiotherapy consisted of wrist prono-supination and flexion-extension muscle group reinforcement and proprioceptive training. To protect the wrist against excessive load, strengthening exercises of prono-supinator and flexor-extensor muscles of elbow and wrist were undertaken on an isokinetic device after an evaluation. She was also given an orthosis restricting the joint range of motion of the wrist. The patient rapidly noted a decrease in pain and an increase in the stability of her right arm even when playing tennis. Isokinetic evaluation objectified symmetric values and an improvement in maximal torque of 20 to 25% in all trained muscles of the right elbow. She was also given individualized home exercises. Conclusion: The goal of rehabilitation is to avoid hypermobility by using the muscles as a protective brake in the control of joint positioning. Thus, muscles were reinforced in eccentric mode with starting position at the maximum length of these muscles when unstreched. The exercises could be carried out safely on an isokinetic device. Indeed eccentric exercises at slow speed and limited range of joint motion avoided risk of luxation. Patients must be informed that it’s a long-term treatment and that in addition to exercises with the physiotherapist personal home exercises are essential. [less ▲]

It is well known that novel and/or unusual exercise consisting of lengthening muscle contractions (eccentric exercise) results in muscle damage. Muscle damage can be assessed via measures of indirect markers such as isometric strength, range of motion, blood levels of muscle-specific proteins and muscle soreness. It has been shown that changes in these markers present a large inter-subject variability. Especially, the seric CK response to exercise is largely documented and some authors introduced the notion of High and Low responders to define subjects with exaggerated and light or moderate response to eccentric protocol, respectively. The reasons for the various susceptibility to eccentric exercise are not understood but it seems to be influenced by several factors including genetical, morphological, physiological or training elements. Further studies are necessary to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of the large inter-subject variability in responses to eccentric exercise and in this context, a proteomic approach could be interesting to highlight protein expression differences between High and Low responders. The evidence of benefits from eccentric contraction provides compelling rationale for their inclusion in force training and in the reeducation of various locomotor pathologies (i.e., tendinopathies or muscular imbalance). However, intense or unusual eccentric exercise frequently leads to muscle damage associated with prolonged loss in muscle strength and range of motion, a dramatic increase in muscle proteins circulating in blood and the development of muscle soreness. These negative functional consequences, referred to as Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS), often disturb the progress of training or reeducation programmes. In an attempt to attenuate signs and symptoms of DOMS, several approaches have been used prophylactically and/or therapeutically. This article focuses on some of the most commonly used modalities, including the nutritionnal and pharmacological strategies, clinical therapies and exercise. Despite a large number of studies, there is little evidence indicating any benefit at the perfomance level of these various approaches. Conversely, there is unequivocal evidence that a bout of eccentric exercise is followed by protection against skeletal muscle damage associated with a subsequent bout of potentially damaging exercise for several weeks to several months. To date, specific submaximal training appears the most efficient prophylactic measure and is recommended to alleviate the prejudiciable consequences associated with DOMS in the athletic or therapeutic programs. Despite the volume of data concerning this protective effect, often called the “repeated bout effect”, the underlying mechanisms of such an adaptation are not fully understood and a better knowledge of these adaptative mechanisms could provide better guidelines for prevention or treatment practice. From the viewpoint of direct imaging of exoplanets in the visible or infrared, exozodi dust disks can be both good and bad. An exozodi disk is good if it has structures (cleared regions or resonant clumps) that suggest the gravitational presence of planets, however it is bad if the dust fills the instrumental field of view with brightness that swamps the signal from a planet. Unfortunately, it takes very little dust to compete with or overwhelm the light from a planet: an Earth‐twin signal is roughly equal to a 0.1‐AU patch of Solar‐System‐twin zodi, in the visible or infrared. Thus, exozodi measurements are extremely important, but they are also difficult to make. Current limits of detection, in units of the Solar‐System brightness, are a few hundred using the Spitzer Space Telescope, about one hundred with the Keck Interferometer (KI), and about 10 expected from the Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer (LBTI). A small coronagraph or small interferometer in space is needed in order to reach the sensitivity required to detect the glow at the level of our own Solar System. [less ▲]

A mid‐infrared mission would enable the detection of biosignatures of Earth‐like exoplanets around more than 150 nearby stars. The mid‐infrared spectral region is attractive for characterizing exoplanets because contrast with the parent star brightness is more favorable than in the visible (10 million vs. 10 billion), and because mid‐infrared light probes deep into a planet’s troposphere. Furthermore, the mid‐infrared offers access to several strong molecular features that are key signs of life, and also provides a measure of the effective temperature and size of a planet. Taken together, an infrared mission plus a visible one would provide a nearly full picture of a planet, including signs of life; with a measure of mass from an astrometric mission, we would have a virtually complete picture. A small infrared mission would have several telescopes that are rigidly connected, with a science return from the detection and characterization of super‐Earth sized to larger planets near the HZ, plus a direct measure of the exozodi brightness in the HZ. In a large infrared mission, with formation‐flying telescopes, planets from an Earth‐twin and upwards in mass could be detected and characterized, as well as the exozodi. If proceeded by an astrometric mission, the detection phase could be skipped and the mission devoted to characterization, as in the visible case; lacking an astrometric mission, an infrared one could proceed alone, as was discussed for a visible coronograph, and with similar caveats. The technology needed for a large formation‐flying mission is similar to that for a small connected‐element one (e.g., cryogenics and detectors), with the addition of formationflying technology. The technology is now in hand to implement a probe‐scale mission; starlight suppression has even been demonstrated to meet the requirements of a flagship mission. However, additional development of formation‐flying technology is needed, particularly in‐space testing of sensors and guidance, navigation, and control algorithms. [less ▲]

Cassini has afforded a number of unique opportunities to understand auroral processes at Saturn and to highlight both differences and similarities with auroral physics at both Earth and Jupiter. A number of campaigns were coordinated with the Hubble Space Telescope such that Cassini could provide either ground truth on the impinging solar wind or in situ measurements of magnetospheric conditions leading to qualitative and sometimes quantitative relationships between the solar wind influence on the intensity, the morphology and evolution of the auroras, and magnetospheric dynamics. The Hubble UV images are enhanced by Cassini’s own remote sensing of the auroras. Cassini’s in situ studies of the structure and dynamics of the magnetosphere discussed in other chapters of this book provide the context for understanding the primary drivers of Saturn’s auroras and the role of magnetospheric dynamics in their variations. Finally, Cassini’s three dimensional prime mission survey of the magnetosphere culminates in high inclination orbits placing it at relatively small radial distances while on auroral field lines, providing the first such in situ observations of auroral particles and fields at a planet other than Earth. The new observations have spawned a number of efforts to model the interaction of the solar wind with the magnetosphere and how such dynamics influence the auroras. [less ▲]

The principal spokesman of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (Mexico, 1994), Subcomandante Marcos, devotes himself simultaneously to armed resistance and literature. Some of the stories he wrote are about a speaking, anti-neoliberal beetle, Don Durito de la Lacandona, who presents himself as an emulator of Don Quixote. The plays with Cervantes’ novel allow Marcos to spread his personal model about the hierarchy in the Zapatista guerrilla war, to dismiss the importance of authorship in the ranks of the revolutionary group and to enable every reader, according to his or her own personal horizon of reading, to actualize the figure of the beetle. It has been suggested that the tales about Durito are a pastiche of the novel of chivalry. We can add to this that, in the same way as Cervantes rewrote old genres by parodying them, the texts about Durito, as far as they are a sincere homage to the Quixote, move away from the traditional engaged literature in Latin America. In this paper I review the possibilities offered by private international rules in force both in Belgium and in France for three selected tools of estate planning : the marriage contract, gift and donation and wills. The purpose is to examine how much freedom the legal framework in place in the two countries offers to private individuals. Specific attention is devoted to the issue of recognition in one country of acts (such as marriage contracts) drafted in the other country. [less ▲]
