At the interface between foldamers and mechanically interlocked molecules, oligorotaxanes exhibit a spring-like folded secondary structure with remarkable mechanical and physicochemical properties. Among these properties, the ability of oligorotaxanes to act as molecular switches through controlled modulations of their spatial extension over (un)folding dynamics is of particular interest. The present study aims to assess and further characterize this remarkable feature in the gas phase using mass spectrometry tools. In this context, we focused on the [4]5NPR+12 oligorotaxane molecule complexed with PF6 - counterion and probed its co-conformational states as a function of the in-source-generated charge states. Data were interpreted in light of electronic secondary structure computations at the PM6 and DFT levels. Our results highlight two major co-conformational groups associated either with folded compact structures, notably stabilized by intramolecular π-π interactions and predominant for low charge states or with fully stretched structures resulting from significant Coulombic repulsions at high charge states. Between, the oligorotaxane adopts intermediate folded co-conformations, suggesting a stepwise unfolding pathway under increasing repulsive Coulombic constraints. The reversibility of this superstructural transition was next interrogated under electron-driven (nondissociative electron transfer) and heat-driven (collision-induced unfolding) activation stimuli. The outcomes support the feasibility to either unfold or (partially) refold the oligorotaxane foldamer on purpose in the gas phase. Our results show that the balance between the stabilizing π-π interactions and the versatile Coulomb interactions dictates the elongation state of the foldamer in the gas phase and emphasizes the adequacy of mass spectrometry tools for the superstructural characterization of desolvated prototypical artificial molecular machines. © 2017 American Chemical Society. This work reviews applications of stable isotope analysis to the studies of transport and transformation of N species in groundwater under agricultural areas. It summarizes evidence regarding factors affecting the isotopic composition of NO3−, NH4+ and N2O in subsurface, and discusses the use of 11B, 18O, 13C, 34S, 87Sr/86Sr isotopes to support the analysis of δ15N values. The isotopic composition of NO3−, NH4+ and N2O varies depending on their sources and dynamics of N cycle processes. The reported δ15N-NO3− values for sources of NO3− are: soil organic N – +3‰–+8‰, mineral fertilizers – −8‰–+7‰; manure/household waste – +5‰ to +35‰. For NH4+ sources, the isotopic signature ranges are: organic matter – +2.4–+4.1‰, rainwater – −13.4–+2.3‰, mineral fertilizers –−7.4–+5.1‰, householdwaste –+5–+9‰; animalmanure–+8–+11‰. ForN2O, isotopic composition depends on isotopic signatures of substrate pools and reaction rates. δ15Nvalues of NO3− are influenced by fractionation effects occurring during denitrification (ɛ=5–40‰), nitrification (ɛ=5–35‰) and DNRA (ɛ not reported). The isotopic signature of NH4+ is also affected by nitrification and DNRA as well as mineralization (ɛ=1‰), sorption (ɛ=1–8‰), anammox (ɛ=4.3–7.4‰) and volatilization (ɛ=25‰). As for theN2O, production of N2O leads to its depletion in 15N, whereas consumption – to enrichment in 15N. The magnitude of fractionation effects occurring during the considered processes depends on temperature, pH, DO, C/NO3− ratio, size of the substrate pool, availability of electron donors, water content in subsoil, residence time, land use, hydrogeology. While previous studies have accumulated rich data on isotopic composition of NO3− in groundwater, evidence remains scarce in the cases of NH4+ and N2O. Further research is required to consider variability of δ15N-NH4+ and δ15N-N2O in groundwater across agricultural ecosystems. [less ▲]

Lors d’un travail de recherche, nous avons rencontré des agriculteurs de la zone limoneuse en Wallonie, un territoire de culture des plus productifs. Ces agriculteurs ont en commun d’avoir installé des bandes aménagées en bordure de parcelles dans le cadre des méthodes agro-environnementales (MAEC - dispositifs de la Politique Agricole Commune visant à protéger l’environnement dans les espaces agricoles). Nous avons tenté de comprendre ce que sont et ce que pourraient devenir les bandes aménagées pour ces agriculteurs. En effet, alors que de nombreux travaux se sont intéressés aux aspects techniques, notamment à la composition et à la gestion des mélanges semés, peu d’attention a été portée aux agriculteurs et à la façon dont ils intègrent ces mélanges dans leur pratique. Nous explorons, à travers notre analyse, la possibilité d’une co-construction des MAEC avec les agriculteurs pour une action agro-environnementale pertinente aussi du point de vue de la production agricole. La présente étude part d’un constat de décalage entre les dires et les faits s’accentue au sein des filiales d’ONG internationales, et plus particulièrement celles du secteur non marchand. En effet, dans les ONG internationales, regroupant souvent un personnel salarié et des bénévoles, les pratiques de GRH informelles sont plus ou moins tolérées que dans le secteur marchand (Pichault et Nizet, 2013). Au cours de notre recherche, nous essayons de répondre à la question centrale suivante : Y’a-t-il une nécessité de penser autrement la GRH ? Et si oui, pourquoi cela est-il nécessaire et par quel processus peuvent se développer ces alternatives ? Le décalage entre la volonté managériale (recommandations de la maison-mère ou de la direction de la filiale) et les pratiques de GRH réellement observées (normes, attitudes et actions des acteurs sur le terrain) comme le cœur et le fondement de l’émergence d’une gestion alternative. En effet, nous considérons la soumission excessive aux exigences du siège et l’ignorance des référents culturels et des convictions communautaires comme les principales sources de la remise en doute de la norme tracée par les dirigeants de l’organisation. L’absence d’intégration, voire le refus, de cette norme entraine les acteurs dans un jeu de pouvoir qui peut donner lieu à l’émergence des pratiques de GRH alternatives. Pour mieux décortiquer et comprendre le processus d’émergence des alternatives, nous nous appuyons sur la théorie de l’acteur (crozier et Friedberg, 1977) et sur la théorie de la régulation sociale (Reynaud, 1997 et 1999). Notre adoptons une méthodologie qualitative à travers une étude de cas portant sur deux filiales d’ONG internationales opérant au Burundi. Nous privilégions une démarche interprétative. Notre collecte de données combine les techniques d’interviews semi-directives auprès des dirigeants et cadres des filiales étudiées (plus ou moins 2heures par interview, l’observation directe sur le terrain (observations de terrain et participation aux réunions à des périodes différentes : période d’avant la guerre, pendant et après la guerre) et les sources documentaires (procès-verbaux des réunions, rapports annuels, manuels de procédures, appels d’offre d’emploi et fiches de recrutement). Nous procédons à l’analyse des données par le biais de l’analyse du contenu en recourant à la catégorisation thématique suivant le triangle de Pettigrew (1997). Selon nos résultats confirment l’émergence de pratiques de GRH alternatives mieux adaptées à la réalité de terrain. Ces dernières sont en cohérence avec les objectifs orgnisationnels si le processus d’appropriation de la règle du siège s’inscrit dans une logique de régulation sociale conjointe dominante. [less ▲]

Understanding the potential drought characteristics under climate change is essential for reducing <br />vulnerability and establishing adaptation strategies, especially in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain (3H Plain) which is the grain production base in China. In this paper, the variation of drought characteristics including drought event frequency, duration, severity and intensity for the past 50 years (1961-2010) and future scenarios (2010-2099) based on observed meteorological data and RCP 8.5 projections were investigated, respectively. Firstly, the applicability of three climatic drought indices including the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index based on the Penman–Monteith equation (SPEI-PM) and the Thornthwaite equation (SPEI-TH) were compared in tracing recorded agricultural drought areas. Then, the drought characteristics including drought event, duration, severity and intensity using “run theory” was analyzed for both historical observations and future RCP 8.5 scenarios based on the proper index. Correlation analysis between drought indexes and agricultural drought areas showed that SPEI-PM performed better than SPI and SPEI-TH in the 3H Plain. Based on the results of SPEI-PM, droughts over the past 50 years have experienced reduced drought with shorter durations, and weaker severity and intensity. However, for the future RCP 8.5 scenario, drought is predicted to rise in frequency, duration, severity and intensity from 2010-2099 although drought components during the 2010-2039 were milder compared to historical conditions. This study highlights that the estimations for atmospheric evaporative demand would bring in differences in long term drought trend of drought indexes and consequently the applicability in 3H Plain. The results of this paper can help inform researchers and local policy makers to establish drought risk management strategies. [less ▲]

The psychometric properties of the French version of the Child Short Form of the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue-CSF) were investigated in a sample of 556 from 9 to 13 years old. The internal consistency and temporal stability were satisfactory. A significant difference for gender, but not for age, was observed. With regard to the factor structure, the best fit was found for a two-factor solution, emotion control and socioemotionality. Regarding convergent validity, positive correlations were found with the total and all except one-factor scores of the Emotion Awareness Questionnaire score (EAQ30). Evidences of concurrent validity were demonstrated, with negative correlations with State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAIC) and Childhood Anxiety Sensitivity Index (CASI). Results also showed a positive correlation with Children’s Social Desirability Scale (CSD). In conclusion, these findings provide additional support for the use of the TEIQue-CSF for researchers and practitioners who want to assess emotion-related constructs in children. [less ▲]

Aims. — Recently, several studies have emerged to evaluate the effects on sports recovery of theperistaltic dynamic pneumatic external compression device developed at Newton Center, MA,USA and marketed as the Normatec Pulse Recovery System, with an increased use recently inthe professional and recreational sports communities. Our objective in this review is to evaluatethe effects of Normatec on performance and sports recovery by reviewing the studies publishedto date.News. — We carried out a literature search from 1st July 2016 to 31st October 2016 on theMedline database via PubMed, Scopus and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials viaOvid, at the end of which we retained for this review the comparative studies between Normatecand placebo, between Normatec and another sports recovery techniques as well as experimentalcontrolled trials, with no restriction on sex and level of training of the participants. All studieswere conducted on healthy subjects aged 18 to 40 years. There were 67 men and 61 women fora total of 128 participants. The selected studies were heterogeneous concerning the modalitiesof exercise before treatment by Normatec, as well as the duration of treatment by Normatec.No adverse effects have been described in the studies included in this review, but without anyspecific control described regarding the potential adverse effects.Conclusion. — Current investigations concerning the sport recovery method using the Normatecdevice have shown a favorable influence on blood lactate clearance, peripheral vascular reac-tivity, post-exercise muscle pain and motion amplitude. However, it does not bring significantgain interest compared to other methods of sport recovery that are cheaper, easier to accessand currently better studied, which must be known by athletes of all levels. However, theseinvestigations provide some insights into the mechanisms underlying the positive effects of thismode of treatment and pave the way for further studies that will contribute to the scientificvalidation of the method of sports recovery by Normatec. Throughout their lives, fish accomplish frequent movements between functional habitats that are often triggered by environmental signals. We aimed to determine if rheophilic cyprinids (barbel, Barbus barbus and chub Squalius cephalus), living in different places of the same river basin, may develop similar movement periodicities and react identically to environmental cues to carry out their spawning migration. We used the capture data of three modern fish passes that were monitored continuously during three consecutive years (2010 to 2012) in three rivers of the Meuse basin in Belgium. We captured 418 individuals at adult stage, and the capture number per species was greater (80%) in spring (during the spawning migration period). The spawning migration of the barbel occurred earlier (median = 122nd day of the year) and at lower temperatures (median = 14.5°C) in the lowland rivers compared to the upland river (140th day of the year and 18.4°C). For the barbel, migration initiation differed depending on the river but finished under similar environmental conditions. In contrast, for the chub, no significant difference between rivers was observed regarding spawning migration periodicity and environmental cues. Within the same river basin, rheophilic cyprinids demonstrate flexibility in their responses to environmental variables and may optimise the start date of migration to spawning grounds depending on their local environment and individual experiences. This phenomenon was more pronounced in the barbel, which has more specific ecological requirements. [less ▲]

Ion Mobility (IM) is now a well-established and fast analytical technique. The IM hardware is constantly being improved, especially in terms of the resolving power. The Drift Tube (DTIMS), the Traveling Wave (TWIMS), and the Trapped Ion Mobility Spectrometry (TIMS) coupled to mass spectrometry are used to determine the Collision Cross-Sections (CCS) of ions. In analytical chemistry, the CCS is approached as a descriptor for ion identification and it is also used in physical chemistry for 3D structure elucidation with computational chemistry support. The CCS is a physical descriptor extracted from the reduced mobility (K0) measurements obtainable only from the DTIMS. TWIMS and TIMS routinely require a calibration procedure to convert measured physical quantities (drift time for TWIMS and elution voltage for TIMS) into CCS values. This calibration is a critical step to allow inter-instrument comparisons. The previous calibrating substances lead to large prediction bands and introduced rather large uncertainties during the CCS determination. In this paper, we introduce a new IM calibrant (CCS and K0) using singly charged sodium adducts of poly(ethylene oxide) monomethyl ether (CH3O-PEO-H) for positive ionization in both helium and nitrogen as drift gas. These singly charged calibrating ions make it possible to determine the CCS/K0 of ions having higher charge states. The fitted calibration plots exhibit larger coverage with less data scattering and significantly improved prediction bands and uncertainties. The reasons for the improved CCS/K0 accuracy, advantages and limitations of the calibration procedures are also discussed. A generalized IM calibration strategy is suggested. [less ▲]

Case report: We report the case of a young Cameroonian woman who presented with cough, hyperthermia, weight loss, pancytopenia, and hepatosplenomegaly. A positive HIV serology was discovered and a chest radiography revealed a ‘miliary pattern’. Bone marrow aspiration pointed out yeast inclusions within macrophages. Given the morphological aspect, the clinical presentation and immunosuppression, histoplasmosis was retained as a working hypothesis. Antiretroviral and amphotericin B treatments were promptly initiated. Review: Given the immigration wave that Europe is currently experiencing, we think it is important to share experience and knowledge, especially in non-endemic areas such as Europe, where clinicians are not used to face this disease. Histoplasmosis is due to Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum, a dimorphic fungus. Infection occurs by inhaling spores contained in soils contaminated by bat or bird droppings. The clinical presentation depends on the immune status of the host and the importance of inoculum, varying from asymptomatic to disseminated forms. AIDS patients are particularly susceptible to develop a severe disease. Antigen detection, molecular biology techniques, and microscopic examination are used to make a rapid diagnosis. However, antigen detection is not available in Europe and diagnosis needs a strong clinical suspicion in non-endemic areas. Because of suggestive imagery, clinicians might focus on tuberculosis. Le jeûne expose, en effet, le sujet diabétique à des complications aiguës majeures, dont l’acidocétose diabétique et les hypoglycémies sévères. Les patients diabétiques devraient, dès lors, bénéficier d’une prise en charge individualisée dès avant le Ramadan comprenant, entre autres éléments, une évaluation du risque et une éducation spécifique. The hydroperiod of breeding habitats imposes a strong selection on amphibians and pond-breeding species usually exhibit a high degree of plasticity in the duration of larval period. However, the potential for phenotypic plasticity in fast developing species was investigated only in a small number of anurans, and the specific response to environmental cues such as low water versus decreasing water level, as well as the effects of such cues on particular developmental stages, are even less understood. In this context, we investigated the plastic response to pond desiccation in a neotropical species (Ceratophrys stolzmanni) by raising tadpoles in three water level treatments: constant high, constant low and decreasing. The growth rates were the highest reported for amphibian tadpoles (up to 0.3g/day) and the time to metamorphosis was short in all treatments, with the fastest developing tadpole metamorphosing in only 16 days after egg deposition. Individuals from the constant high water level treatment had a higher growth rate than those in the other two treatments, whereas decreasing and constant low water levels had similar effects on development, speeding up metamorphosis. In turn, this involved a cost as these tadpoles had a lower body size and mass at metamorphosis than the ones raised in constant high water levels. The final stages of metamorphosis, when tadpoles are the most vulnerable, were shorter in tadpoles exposed to a decreasing water level, allowing them to leave water quickly. Our experiment demonstrates that phenotypic plasticity is maintained even in environments devoid of permanent aquatic habitats. Ceratophryd tadpoles are able to shorten their developmental time when they perceive a risk of desiccation and react similarly to cues coming from the two unfavorable water conditions showing their adaptation to ephemeral and unpredictable breeding habitats. Digital investigations of the real world through point clouds and derivatives are changing how curators, cultural heritage researchers and archaeologists work and collaborate. To progressively aggregate expertise and enhance the working proficiency of all professionals, virtual reconstructions demand adapted tools to facilitate knowledge dissemination. However, to achieve this perceptive level, a point cloud must be semantically rich, retaining relevant information for the end user. In this paper, we review the state of the art of point cloud integration within archaeological applications, giving an overview of 3D technologies for heritage, digital exploitation and case studies showing the assimilation status within 3D GIS. Identified issues and new perspectives are addressed through a knowledge-based point cloud processing framework for multi-sensory data, and illustrated on mosaics and quasi-planar objects. A new acquisition, pre-processing, segmentation and ontology-based classification method on hybrid point clouds from both terrestrial laser scanning and dense image matching is proposed to enable reasoning for information extraction. Experiments in detection and semantic enrichment show promising results of 94% correct semantization. Then, we integrate the metadata in an archaeological smart point cloud data structure allowing spatio-semantic queries related to CIDOC-CRM. Finally, a WebGL prototype is presented that leads to efficient communication between actors by proposing optimal 3D data visualizations as a basis on which interaction can grow. [less ▲]

Guinea fowl production in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is generally practiced under family and traditional rearing systems mainly for consumption and income generation, but this species plays also a major socio-cultural role in specific ceremonies. Birds are kept in free range or in confinement with outdoor access and fed on grain cereals, vegetables, edible termites and kitchen residues found in nature or occasionally supplied by the farmers. Several Guinea fowl varieties are observed and all are characterized by slow growth, high mortality of young and a relatively wild instinct. Although this avian species is less sensitive to some poultry diseases (Newcastle disease, Marek disease, Gumboro disease, etc), local guinea fowl are very sensitive to other poorly controlled diseases that require further study. These varieties differ greatly by their feather color, their morphological characteristics and growth performance, but further thorough and sustained research is needed to quantify these differences. Several researches established the nutritional requirements of local Guinea fowl but in terms of breeding, little works were done compared to chicken. Some recessive and dominant genes as well as genotypic differences were highlighted between varieties. [less ▲]

Les hommes ne voient pas comme les mouches, ni les chiens, ni les truites, ni les aigles. Le monde est l’édifice diversifié du sensible selon ses occupants. Et, parmi les hommes, tard venus dans le paysage, un nouveau principe de variété : celui des histoires, des temps, des récits, des cultures. Il y a, en aval des longues conditions de l’espèce, pour l’homme surtout, sinon pour l’homme seulement, la variété historique des formes du sensible et de la perception. Qu’est-ce que voir ? Une histoire du regard est une histoire des réponses apportées à cette question, mais aussi des expériences dont elles témoignent ou qu’elles rendent possibles. Despite some encouraging findings for the treatment of neuropathic pain in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) directed to the primary motor cortex (M1) has faced some mixed results. Prior to translating this technology to clinical care, consistent results and durable effects need to be found. We, therefore, aimed to assess the direct and long-term effects of tDCS on pain following SCI. We performed a two-phase randomized sham-controlled clinical trial where patients received 5days of tDCS followed by a 3-month follow-up period (Phase I); then, Phase II consisted of 10days of tDCS with an 8-week follow-up period. We assessed the level of pain with the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Patients' quality of life and life satisfaction were also evaluated. 33 patients were enrolled in Phase I and 9 in Phase II. We observed a treatment effect at 1-week follow-up for Phase I and at 4-week follow-up for Phase II. The overall level of pain was significantly lower for the active group, as compared to sham, in Phase II. Our exploratory study shows that tDCS does seem to be a promising tool to manage pain in patients with SCI and repeated stimulation sessions are needed to induce long-lasting effects. The hardness and corrosion resistance of TiN coatings, processed by Electrophoretic Deposition (EPD) to cover polished and unpolished Ti substrates, have been evaluated. A deposition time of 5 min has been enough to obtain a cohesive layer of 7–8 μm in thickness. The coatings were thermally treated in vacuum atmosphere at 1200 °C for 1 h with heating and cooling rates of 5 °C min−1. The surfaces have been covered homogeneously optimizing the properties of the Ti substrates. Uniform and dense TiN coatings have been obtained onto polished substrates, while on unpolished Ti the nitrogen diffuses toward the substrate, moderately dissolving TiN coating. The nanohardness values of the polished samples have been increased from 2.8–4.8 GPa up to 6.5–8.5 GPa. Besides, the corrosion current density has been reduced more than one order of magnitude obtaining a protective efficiency of 82%. These values have been compared with other works in literature where authors used complex and costly processing techniques, demonstrating the strong impact of the colloidal processing over the specific properties of the material. The aim of this study was to compare trapping efficiency between Berlese-Tullgren funnels, pitfall traps and hand sorting sampling methods for soil litter arthropods. The study was carried out at the Arboretum of Ruhande and Rubona agricultural research station, in southern Rwanda. Biological indices indicated that pitfall traps collect a wide range of soil litter arthropod diversity, and chi-square test indicated the dependence between Berlese-Tullgren funnels and pitfall traps, and between pitfall traps and hand sorting. Z-test and univariate comparison indicated differences in means between tested sampling methods. The analysis of variance revealed that pitfall traps are less time consuming and the principal component analysis indicated that Formicidae is likely to be collected by pitfall traps and Berlese-Tullgren funnels, while Julidae, Porcellionidae and Geophilidae are likely to be collected by hand sorting. Research concluded that pitfall traps are more efficient than other studied sampling methods, but further studies should be conducted in other ecological zones, and different land uses in order to generate general information of these findings. This special collection follows up on the transdisciplinary conference Poetics of the Algorithm held at the University of Liège (Belgium) in June 2016. Narrative today is undergoing a radical change in its ‘source code’ as new technologies are changing the way texts are produced, distributed, viewed and read. Even though comics have originally been resistant to a sweeping digital translation, weary of a technological utopianism that did not bode well for its own specificities, cartoonists have increasingly adapted to this new media ecology, using it to reinvent their approach to comics making. A poetics of digital comics would aim at mapping out how comics respond to the deep technological change of the digital in complex ways, avoiding the pitfall of a new vs. old dichotomy and thus accounting for both its innovative forays into digital creation as well as its paradoxes, resistances, residues and returns. By bringing Francophone voices into English, this collection, under the editorial direction of Benoît Crucifix, Björn-Olav Dozo, Aarnoud Rommens and Ernesto Priego for The Comics Grid: Journal of Comics Scholarship, seeks to encourage international scholarship spanning from the cutting-edge of a ‘French comics theory’ that, in recent years, has paid increasing attention to digital comics. Common scab disease on root and tuber plants is caused by Streptomyces scabies and related species which use the cellulose synthase inhibitor thaxtomin A as main phytotoxin. Thaxtomin production is primarily triggered by the import of cello-oligosaccharides. Once inside the cell, the fate of the cello-oligosaccharides is dichotomized into i) fueling glycolysis with glucose for the saprophytic lifestyle through the action of β-glucosidase(s) (BG), and ii) eliciting the pathogenic lifestyle by inhibiting the CebR-mediated transcriptional repression of thaxtomin biosynthetic genes. Here we investigated the role of scab57721 encoding a putative BG (BglC) in the onset of the pathogenicity of S. scabies. Enzymatic assays showed that BglC was able to release glucose from cellobiose, cellotriose and all other cello-oligosaccharides tested. Its inactivation resulted in a phenotype opposite to what was expected as we monitored reduced production of thaxtomin when the mutant was cultivated on media containing cello-oligosaccharides as unique carbon source. This unexpected phenotype could be attributed to the highly increased activity of alternative intracellular BGs, probably as a compensation of bglC inactivation, which then prevented cellobiose and cellotriose accumulation to reduce the activity of CebR. In contrast, when the bglC null mutant was cultivated on media devoid of cello-oligosaccharides it instead constitutively produced thaxtomin. This observed hypervirulent phenotype does not fit with the proposed model of the cello-oligosaccharide-mediated induction of thaxtomin production and suggests that the role of BglC in the route to the pathogenic lifestyle of S. scabies is more complex than currently presented. Subunit II of cytochrome c oxidase (Cox2) is usually encoded in the mitochondrial genome, synthesized in the organelle, inserted co-translationally into the inner mitochondrial membrane, and assembled into the respiratory complex. In chlorophycean algae however, the cox2 gene was split into the cox2a and cox2b genes, and in some algal species like Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Polytomella sp. both fragmented genes migrated to the nucleus. The corresponding Cox2A and Cox2B subunits are imported into mitochondria forming a heterodimeric Cox2 subunit. When comparing the sequences of chlorophycean Cox2Aand Cox2B proteins with orthodox Cox2 subunits, a C-terminal extension in Cox2A and an N-terminal extension in Cox2B were identified. It was proposed that these extensions favor the Cox2A/Cox2B interaction. In vitro studies carried out in this work suggest that the removal of the Cox2B extension only partially affects binding of Cox2B to Cox2A.We conclude that this extension is dispensable, but when present it weakly reinforces the Cox2A/Cox2B interaction. Almost 40 years ago, the first pathogenic human retrovirus was discovered and shown to cause a T-cell leukemia in humans (Poiesz et al., 1980a, 1981). Thus, a new paradigm was established showing that a virus can directly cause cancer in humans. At that time, the only other suspected case was the connection between the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) and Burkitt’s Lymphoma and later nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Naturally, and in keeping with the names used for animal retroviruses associated with leukemia, we (the Gallo group) named this new virus as human T-cell leukemia virus (HTLV), which was formally accepted by the scientific community. As of today, our list of human oncogenic viruses has expanded to include hepatitis B/C virus (HBV, HCV), papillomaviruses (HPV), Herpes virus-8 (HHV-8), and Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCV). In parallel, the group of Delta-retroviruses that HTLV belongs to has expanded to accommodate additionalmembers over the years, now consisting ofHTLV-1_4, and STLV-1_4. In themeantime, the name of the original virus was changed to human T-lymphotropic virus-1, because of the addition of the viral causative agent of AIDS as HTLV-III to the same group (Coffin, 2015). Thus, one of us (RCG) agreed on this name change with several other retrovirologists at a Cold-Spring Harbor meeting in 1983. In retrospect, the name change has made it ambiguous as to which virus should enter this group, and since the AIDS virus was formally named HIV and separated from the HTLV group, making the need for the name of HTLV-1 as human T-“lymphotropic” virus no longer particularly useful or meaningful. Finally, we note here the greater oncogenicity of HTLV-1 compared to other viruses, or even other known carcinogens which is a point in keeping a name that describes their effect (discussed in an accompanying article). Therefore, we propose to restore the original name “leukemia virus.” [less ▲]

Les cultures maraichères occupent une place importante pour l’alimentation humaine et contribuent significativement aux revenus des familles en Afrique de l’Ouest, mais leur production est confrontée à une pression des bioagresseurs qui limite leur productivité. Littérature. Cette revue, basée sur des publications scientifiques, a pour objectif d’évaluer le potentiel des plantes pesticides comme alternative à l’usage des pesticides de synthèse pour lutter contre les bioagresseurs des cultures maraichères en Afrique de l’Ouest. Elle montre que le principal moyen actuel pour combattre ces bioagresseurs repose essentiellement sur les pesticides de synthèse. Cependant, compte tenu de leur nocivité sur l’homme et l’environnement, en plus de la sélection de populations résistantes chez les bioagresseurs, la recherche de solutions alternatives s’impose. Les plantes pesticides se présentent comme une alternative prometteuse dans le contexte ouest-africain. En effet, diverses espèces de plantes pesticides peuvent être utilisées comme extraits de plantes ou en association avec d’autres cultures pour le contrôle des bioagresseurs. Celles-ci sont présentées dans le présent article de synthèse. Conclusions. Les plantes pesticides peuvent être une alternative prometteuse pour la gestion des bioagresseurs des cultures maraichères. Cependant, la plupart d’entre elles ne sont pas cultivées. Explorer les capacités biocides de plantes d’intérêt comme le genre Ocimum, connu pour ses usages thérapeutique, médicinal et alimentaire pourrait être intéressant pour le producteur. Toutefois, les populations doivent être sensibilisées sur les avantages à long terme des produits traités avec les pesticides à base de plantes pour faciliter leur utilisation. [less ▲]

To understand the cooling aspect through natural convection in a cryogenic fluid interacting with a constant heat source, numerical simulations are carried out in a parallelepiped enclosure. The 3D form of N-S equations is solved to obtain the detailed flow features through path line profiles, isotherm contours and velocity vectors. The effect of heater aspect ratio (x/L) on the rate of heat transfer is studied in terms of the average Nusselt number (Nuave). The results indicate that effective heat transfer enhancement occurs for a small heater length, resulting in an efficient cooling. Increasing the heater length will favor heat transfer through conduction over convection. The maximum temperature difference across the fluid and the velocity magnitude are found to decrease with heater length. 3D and 2D results are in agreement for short heater lengths, but vary for higher heater lengths, presumably due to the essential effect of the heater width. Further analysis on different types of coolant reveals a constant correlation between Nuave and the Rayleigh number (Ra), with Nuave ~ Ra^0.374. Benchmark validation for natural convection in a square enclosure is found to be satisfactory against the reported results. [less ▲]

Liquid chromatographic methods in isocratic mode for the analysis of poor quality medicines are privileged due to their simplicity and facility in methods development. They are generally fast; do not need to be re-equilibrated between sample injections; have larger flexibility with acceptable changes on different column dimensions; and are applicable to LC systems equipped with simple or high developed pumps. In this study, we focused on developing simple isocratic methods using classical mobile phase composed by methanol and ammonium formate buffer for the analysis of most common antimalarial medicines marketed in malaria endemic countries and susceptible of being counterfeit/falsified, substandard and degraded. The selected medicines were quinine and related cinchona alkaloids in tablets and injectable forms; artemether/ lumefantrine tablets; and artemisinin compounds (arteether, artemether, and artesunate) in injectable forms. The current methods were developed thanks to simple methodological approach consisting in sequential isocratic runs through adjustment or adaptation of existing methods to obtain optimal analytical conditions without complex design of experiments that might be long and costly. Then, the new methods presented shorter analysis time; allowed increase of sample analysis throughput; and obviously consumed little mobile phase solvents on classical analytical columns: 50 - 250 mm of length (L), 4.6 mm of internal diameter (I.D.), and 3.5 - 5.0 μm of particle size (dp). n recent years, several studies have described the presence of Clostridium difficile in healthy and diarrhoeic farm and domestic animals. In pigs and cattle, the isolation of some PCR-ribotypes associated with human infection, especially PCR-ribotypes 014 and 078, has led us to hypothesize about the zoonotic transmission of C. difficile infections. If these animals are reservoirs of C. difficile, farmers in close contact with their animals are particularly at risk of acquiring and spreading the bacterium. This study investigates the presence of C. difficile in closely associated populations, beef cattle and farmers, as well as in the animal feed, manure and dust in five different farms in Belgium. C. difficile was isolated from calves and cattle with a prevalence varying between 5.5% and 11.3%. Furthermore, all of the isolates were toxigenic. An important age and breed effect was observed in the colonization of C. difficile. For age, there was a higher probability of colonization in calves of less than 6 months in age than in cattle over 11 months of age. For the type of breed a higher prevalence of the bacterium was detected in the Limousin breed than in the Belgian Bleu breed. By contrast, none of the human and animal feed samples tested positive for C. difficile. The results obtained indicate a persistent animal reservoir of C. difficile, but an indirect dissemination to humans, probably via the environment. [less ▲]

We investigated anaerobic nitrogen (N) cycling in the water column of Lake Kivu, a deep meromictic tropical lake in East Africa. Data were collected at one station in the Northern Basin and one in the Southern Basin, during two sampling campaigns (June 2011—dry season, and February 2012—rainy season). Short-term incubations of sulfide-free water with 15N-labeled substrates revealed high potential denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) rates (up to 350 and 36 nmol N produced L−1 h−1, respectively), while anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) was lower (up to 3.3 nmol N produced L−1 h−1). However, anammox rates were 15 nmol N produced L−1 h−1 when 15 NH4+ was added at depths where NH4+ concentrations were very low (< 1 μmol L−1). With the addition of 5 μmol L−1 of 15 NO3− and 10 μmol L−1 of H2S, denitrification and anammox were stimulated in the Northern Basin, while the increase of DNRA rates was less notable. In the Southern Basin, the addition of H2S decreased denitrification rates, probably because of competition with DNRA, which increased, while no effect was observed on anammox. This study puts into evidence the co-occurrence of denitrification, anammox and DNRA, for the first time in a great tropical lake, and underlines the spatial heterogeneity of these processes. Contrary to numerous reports in literature, we show that anammox can significantly occur in presence of H2S, suggesting that the contribution of anammox in the N cycle may be underestimated. Endocrine disruption compounds (EDCs) and parasitism can both interfere with the reproduction process of organisms. The amphipod Gammarus pulex is the host of the vertically transmitted microsporidia Dictyocoela duebenum, and this work was devoted to the investigation of the effect of an exposure to the anti-androgen compound, cyproterone acetate (CPA), and/or of the presence of D. duebenum on the spermatozoa production and length. Significant reduction of the spermatozoa production was observed when G. pulex males were uninfected and exposed to CPA. There also appeared a lower number of spermatozoa when D. duebenum infects G. pulex, whatever the exposure condition. Moreover, we highlighted that CPA has no effect on spermatozoa production when males are infected by D. duebenum, and no treatment has impacted the spermatozoa length. Our results suggest CPA and D. duebenum could impact the endocrine system of G. pulex and especially processes close to the spermatozoa production (e.g., androgenic gland, androgen gland hormone released, gonad-inhibiting hormone synthesized by X-organ). However, as no mechanism of action was highlighted, further testing need to be performed to improve the understanding of their impacts. Finally, results confirm that vertically transmitted microsporidia could be a confounding factor in the endocrine disruption assessments in Gammaridae. [less ▲]

The human ether-à-go-go channel (hEag1 or KV10.1) is a cancer-relevant voltage-gated potassium channel that is overexpressed in a majority of human tumors. Peptides that are able to selectively inhibit this channel can be lead compounds in the search for new anticancer drugs. Here, we report the activity-guided purification and electrophysiological characterization of a novel KV10.1 inhibitor from the sea anemone Anthopleura elegantissima. Purified sea anemone fractions were screened for inhibitory activity on KV10.1 by measuring whole-cell currents as expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes using the two-microelectrode voltage clamp technique. Fractions that showed activity on Kv10.1 were further purified by RP-HPLC. The amino acid sequence of the peptide was determined by a combination of MALDI- LIFT-TOF/TOF MS/MS and CID-ESI-FT-ICR MS/MS and showed a high similarity with APETx1 and APETx3 and was therefore named APETx4. Subsequently, the peptide was electrophysiologically characterized on KV10.1. The selectivity of the toxin was investigated on an array of voltage-gated ion channels, including the cardiac human ether-à-go-go-related gene potassium channel (hERG or Kv11.1). The toxin inhibits KV10.1 with an IC50 value of 1.1 µM. In the presence of a similar toxin concentration, a shift of the activation curve towards more positive potentials was observed. Similar to the effect of the gating modifier toxin APETx1 on hERG, the inhibition of Kv10.1 by the isolated toxin is reduced at more positive voltages and the peptide seems to keep the channel in a closed state. Although the peptide also induces inhibitory effects on other KV and NaV channels, it exhibits no significant effect on hERG. Moreover, APETx4 induces a concentration-dependent cytotoxic and proapoptotic effect in various cancerous and noncancerous cell lines. This newly identified KV10.1 inhibitor can be used as a tool to further characterize the oncogenic channel KV10.1 or as a scaffold for the design and synthesis of more potent and safer anticancer drugs. © 2017 by the authors. Landscape diversification is a key element for the development of sustainable agriculture. This study explores whether the implementation of habitats for pest natural enemies enhances conservation biological control in an adjacent field. In the present study conducted in Gembloux (Belgium) in 2016, the effect of two different habitats (wildflower strips and a forest) and aphid abundance on the density of aphid natural enemies, mummified aphids and parasitism on pea plants was assessed through visual observations. The effect of the habitats on aphids was also evaluated. The habitats but not aphid density significantly affected hoverfly larvae, which were more abundant adjacent to wildflower strips than to the forest. The contrary was observed for ladybeetle adults, which were positively related with aphids but not affected by the adjacent habitats. The abundance of mummies and the parasitism rate were significantly affected by both the habitats and aphid density. They were both significantly enhanced adjacent to wildflower strips compared to the forest, but the total parasitism rate was low (<1%), questioning whether parasitoids could significantly control aphids on the pea crop. As for the aphids, their abundance was not significantly affected by the adjacent habitats. These results are discussed with respect to the potential of these habitats to provide overwintering sites and food resources for natural enemies, and thereby enhance conservation biological control. Recent studies have demonstrated that both ordinal number processing and serial order working memory (WM) abilities predict calculation achievement. This raises the question of shared ordinal processes operating in both numerical and WM domains. We explored this question by assessing the interrelations between numerical ordinal, serial order WM, and arithmetic abilities in 102 7- to 9-year-old children. We replicated previous studies showing that ordinal numerical judgement and serial order WM predict arithmetic abilities. Furthermore, we showed that ordinal numerical judgement abilities predict arithmetic abilities after controlling for serial order WM abilities while the relationship between serial order WM and arithmetic abilities was mediated by numerical ordinal judgement performance. We discuss these results in the light of recent theoretical frameworks considering that numerical ordinal codes support the coding of order information in verbal WM. [less ▲]

This paper consists in the description and application of a method called wavelet-induced mode extraction (WIME) in the context of time-frequency analysis. WIME aims to extract the oscillating components that build amplitude modulated-frequency modulated signals. The essence of this technique relies on the successive extractions of the dominant ridges of wavelet-based time-frequency representations of the signal under consideration. Our tests on simulated examples indicate strong decomposition and reconstruction skills, trouble-free handling of crossing trajectories in the time-frequency plane, sharp performances in frequency detection in the case of mode-mixing problems, and a natural tolerance to noise. These results are compared with those obtained with empirical mode decomposition. We also show that WIME still gives meaningful results with real-life data, namely, the Oceanic Niño Index. [less ▲]

Ozone profile trends over the period 2000 to 2016 from several merged satellite ozone data sets and from ground-based data by four techniques at stations of the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change indicate significant ozone increases in the upper stratosphere, between 35 and 48 km altitude (5 and 1 hPa). Near 2 hPa (42 km), ozone has been increasing by about 1.5 % per decade in the tropics (20°S to 20°N), and by 2 to 2.5 % per decade in the 35° to 60° latitude bands of both hemispheres. At levels below 35 km (5 hPa), 2000 to 2016 ozone trends are smaller and not statistically significant. The observed trend profiles are consistent with expectations from chemistry climate model simulations. Using three to four more years of observations and updated data sets, this study confirms positive trends of upper stratospheric ozone already reported, e.g., in the WMO/UNEP Ozone Assessment 2014, or by Harris et al. (2015). The additional years, and the fact that nearly all individual data sets indicate these increases, give enhanced confidence. Nevertheless, a thorough analysis of possible drifts and differences between various data sources is still required, as is a detailed attribution of the observed increases to declining ozone depleting substances and to stratospheric cooling. Ongoing quality observations from multiple independent platforms are key for verifying that recovery of the ozone layer continues as expected. [less ▲]

Panda oleosa Pierre (POP), a tropical plant tree, has been used in traditional medicine in Kisangani city and around to treat various diseases including diabètes and HIV/AIDs. This study aims to evaluate the chemical composition of POP extracts while setting up chromatographic fingerprints for their quality control, and the anti-hyperglycemic potential of trunk bark aqueous extracts of POP. Common chemical reactions were used for identification of main secondary metabolic groups. Thin layer chromatography was used to set up several chromatographic fingerprints of water and alcoholic extracts while evaluating chemical composition. Oral glucose tolerance test served to induce hyperglycemia in a rabbit model. The extracts were given as 25 mg/kg, 50 mg/kg, and 100 mg/kg body weight, 30 minutes before loading animals with glucose 4 g/kg. Blood samples were collected at various times: just before extracts (T-30), before (T0) and after glucose load (T30, T60, T120, and T180). Blood glucose levels were measured with One Touch Glucometer. The identification tests revealed the presence of saponins (3.58%), tannins (5%); alkaloids, quinones, flavonoids, and terpenes sterols could not be formerly detected by the reagents used. Interesting chromatographic spots were observed whose behaviors are of catechic tannin proanthocyanes. The extract significantly reduced glucose levels in dose dependent manner as compared to control and glibenclamide reference groups. The average of mean percentage of reduction in glucose level at T120 with the extract 100 mg/kg was close to that of glibenclamide 0.25 mg/kg (49% and 40.2%). These findings back the traditional use of the plant to treat diabetic patients and constitute a foundation for an extensive study to find a new antidiabetic phythomedicine. [less ▲]

A warm/hot dust component (at temperature $>$ 300K) has been detected around $\sim$ 20% of stars. This component is called "exozodiacal dust" as it presents similarities with the zodiacal dust detected in our Solar System, even though its physical properties and spatial distribution can be significantly different. Understanding the origin and evolution of this dust is of crucial importance, not only because its presence could hamper future detections of Earth-like planets in their habitable zones, but also because it can provide invaluable information about the inner regions of planetary systems. In this review, we present a detailed overview of the observational techniques used in the detection and characterisation of exozodiacal dust clouds ("exozodis") and the results they have yielded so far, in particular regarding the incidence rate of exozodis as a function of crucial parameters such as stellar type and age, or the presence of an outer cold debris disc. We also present the important constraints that have been obtained, on dust size distribution and spatial location, by using state-of-the-art radiation transfer models on some of these systems. Finally, we investigate the crucial issue of how to explain the presence of exozodiacal dust around so many stars (regardless of their ages) despite the fact that such dust so close to its host star should disappear rapidly due to the coupled effect of collisions and stellar radiation pressure. Several potential mechanisms have been proposed to solve this paradox and are reviewed in detail in this paper. The review finishes by presenting the future of this growing field. [less ▲]

The segregation of the causal mutation (mh) in the muscular hypertrophy gene in dual-purpose Belgian Blue (dpBB) cattle is considered to result in greater calving difficulty (dystocia). Establishing adapted genetic evaluations might overcome this situation through efficient selection. However, the heterogeneity of dpBB populations at the mh locus implies separating the major gene and other polygenic effects in complex modeling. The use of mixed inheritance models may be an interesting option because they simultaneously assume both influences. A genetic evaluation in dpBB based on a mixed inheritance model was developed for birth and conformation traits: gestation length (GL), calving difficulty (CD), birth weight (BiW), and body conformation score (BC). A total of 27,362 animals having records were used for analyses. The total number of animals in the pedigree used to build the numerator relationship matrix was 62,617. Genotypes at the mh locus were available for 2,671 animals. Missing records at this locus were replaced with genotype probabilities. A total of 13,221 (48.3%) were registered as dpBB, 1,287 (4.7%) as beef Belgian Blue, and 12,854 (47.0%) were unknown. From those 13,221dpBB animals, 650, 849, and 534 had double or single copies or no copy, respectively, of the causal mutation (mh) in the muscular hypertrophy gene, whereas 11,188 had missing genotypes. This heterogeneity at the mh locus may be the reason for high variability in the studied traits, that is, high heritability estimates of 0.33, 0.30, 0.38, and 0.43 for GL, CD, BiW, and BC, respectively. In general, additive (P < 0.05) and dominance (P < 0.001) allele substitution for calves and dams had significant impact for all traits. The moderate coefficient of genetic variation (27.80%) and high direct heritability (0.28) for CD suggested genetic variability in dpBB and possible genetic improvement through selection. This variability has allowed dpBB breeders to successfully apply mass selection in the past. Genetic trend means from 1988 to 2016 showed that sire selection for CD within genotype was progressively applied by breeders. The selection intensity was more important for CD in double-muscled lines than in segregated lines. Our study illustrated the possible confusion caused by the use of major genes in selection and the importance of fitting appropriate models such as mixed inheritance models that combine polygenic and gene content information. Abstract Background There are numerous definitions of General Practice and Family Medicine (GP/FM) and Primary Health Care (PHC), but the distinction between the two concepts is unclear. Aim To conduct a terminological analysis of a set of definitions of GP/FM and of PHC, to clarify what binds and what distinguishes these two concepts. Design The terms of 20 definitions were collected in two bags of words (one for GP/FM and one for PHC terms). A terminological analysis of these two bags of words was performed to prioritize the terms and analyze their world of reference. Methods The two collected bags of words were extracted with Vocabgrabber®, configured in two term butts using Wordle®, and further explored for similarities using Tropes®. The prioritized terms were analyzed using the Aristotelian approach to categorization of things. Results Although continuity of care (with person-centered approach and shared decision making) is the central issue of the two sets, the two sets of definitions differ greatly in content. The prioritized terms specific to GP/FM (community, medicine, responsibility, individual, problem, needs, ...) are different from prioritized terms specific to PHC (home, team, promotion, collaborator, engagement, neighborhood, medical center…). Conclusion Terminological analysis of the definitions for GP/FM and PHC shows two entities which are overlapping but distinct, necessitating a different taxonomic approach and different bibliographic search strategies. The observed radioactivity level of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in the investigated soil samples was compared with some published data available in some countries including Cameroon and observed varying within some reported data of radioactivity in soil from bauxite ore deposit. 235U and 137Cs were found in very few samples with a very low average of activity concentrations. In the majority of the samples, the observed radiological safety parameters seem to be greater than the internationally approved values. Consequently, using bricks made of soil as building materials might lead to an increase in radiation risk for the population. Multivariate statistical analysis of activity concentrations of primordial radionuclides performed showed an asymmetrical distribution with more peaked than Gaussian distribution and relatively flatter distribution of radionuclides in soil. In addition, a good positive interrelation between 226Ra and 232Th was observed and a weak negative one observed between 40K and 226Ra–232Th. [less ▲]

This article considers the economic effects of corporatization processes in Africa through an analysis of the intervention of French media companies in the economy of Nigerian video film distribution in Frenchspeaking West Africa, and particularly in Côte d’Ivoire. In a global context that is marked by the price volatility of raw materials such as oil and copper, screen media have been described as the new ‘African black gold’, attracting the interest of a large number of both African and non- African players and setting in motion a process of the ‘corporate takeover’ of African screen media industries. Analysing this process can help us to understand wider economic transformations in Africa. This article examines what we might call the ‘technopolitics’ of Nigerian video films’ circulation and their historical transformations by examining the microdimension of the experiences of a number of West African video film producers and distributors, and the macro-dimension of the activities of a French corporation, CanalPlus, which is investing in Nollywood’s distribution. It argues that Nollywood has acquired a strategic function for French enterprises that are investing in Africa, as evidenced by the transformation of Côte d’Ivoire’s role in the economy of Nigerian video films’ transnational circulation. This suggests a new and transformed dimension to France’s economic and political relationships with sub-Saharan Africa, as well as a more nuanced assessment of the politics of African neoliberalism. The most intense auroral emissions from Earth's polar regions, called discrete for their sharply defined spatial configurations, are generated by a process involving coherent acceleration of electrons by slowly evolving, powerful electric fields directed along the magnetic field lines that connect Earth's space environment to its polar regions. In contrast, Earth's less intense auroras are generally caused by wave scattering of magnetically trapped populations of hot electrons (in the case of diffuse aurora) or by the turbulent or stochastic downward acceleration of electrons along magnetic field lines by waves during transitory periods (in the case of broadband or Alfvénic aurora). Jupiter's relatively steady main aurora has a power density that is so much larger than Earth's that it has been taken for granted that it must be generated primarily by the discrete auroral process. However, preliminary in situ measurements of Jupiter's auroral regions yielded no evidence of such a process. Here we report observations of distinct, high-energy, downward, discrete electron acceleration in Jupiter's auroral polar regions. We also infer upward magnetic-field-aligned electric potentials of up to 400 kiloelectronvolts, an order of magnitude larger than the largest potentials observed at Earth. Despite the magnitude of these upward electric potentials and the expectations from observations at Earth, the downward energy flux from discrete acceleration is less at Jupiter than that caused by broadband or stochastic processes, with broadband and stochastic characteristics that are substantially different from those at Earth. ESO, in collaboration with the Breakthrough Initiatives, is working to modify the Very Large Telescope mid-IR imager (VISIR) to greatly enhance its ability to search for potentially habitable planets around both components of the binary Alpha Centauri, part of the closest stellar system to the Earth. Much of the funding for the NEAR (New Earths in the Alpha Cen Region) project is provided by the Breakthrough Initiatives, and ESO mostly provides staff and observing time. The concept combines adaptive optics using the deformable secondary mirror at Unit Telescope 4, a new annular groove phase mask (AGPM) coronagraph optimised for the most sensitive spectral bandpass in the N-band, and a novel internal chopper system for noise filtering based on a concept for longer wavelengths invented by the microwave pioneer Robert Dicke. The NEAR experiment is relevant to the mid-infrared METIS instrument on the Extremely Large Telescope, as the knowledge gained and proof of concept will be transferable. [less ▲]

Gravitational microlensing is a powerful tool allowing one to probe the structure of quasars on sub-parsec scale. We report recent results, focusing on the broad absorption and emission line regions. In particular microlensing reveals the intrinsic absorption hidden in the P Cygni-type line profiles observed in the broad absorption line quasar H1413+117, as well as the existence of an extended continuum source. In addition, polarization microlensing provides constraints on the scattering region. In the quasar Q2237+030, microlensing differently distorts the Hα and CIV broad emission line profiles, indicating that the low- and high-ionization broad emission lines must originate from regions with distinct kinematical properties. We also present simulations of the effect of microlensing on line profiles considering simple but representative models of the broad emission line region. Comparison of observations to simulations allows us to conclude that the Hα emitting region in Q2237+030 is best represented by a Keplerian disk. [less ▲]

The basal topography is largely unknown beneath most glaciers and ice caps, and many attempts have been made to estimate a thickness field from other more accessible information at the surface. Here, we present a two-step reconstruction approach for ice thickness that solves mass conservation over single or several connected drainage basins. The approach is applied to a variety of test geometries with abundant thickness measurements including marine- and land-terminating glaciers as well as a 2400 km2 ice cap on Svalbard. The input requirements are kept to a minimum for the first step. In this step, a geometrically controlled, non-local flux solution is converted into thickness values relying on the shallow ice approximation (SIA). In a second step, the thickness field is updated along fast-flowing glacier trunks on the basis of velocity observations. Both steps account for available thickness measurements. Each thickness field is presented together with an error-estimate map based on a formal propagation of input uncertainties. These error estimates point out that the thickness field is least constrained near ice divides or in other stagnant areas. Withholding a share of the thickness measurements, error estimates tend to overestimate mismatch values in a median sense. We also have to accept an aggregate uncertainty of at least 25 % in the reconstructed thickness field for glaciers with very sparse or no observations. For Vestfonna ice cap (VIC), a previous ice volume estimate based on the same measurement record as used here has to be corrected upward by 22 %. We also find that a 13 % area fraction of the ice cap is in fact grounded below sea level. The former 5 % estimate from a direct measurement interpolation exceeds an aggregate maximum range of 6–23 % as inferred from the error estimates here. [less ▲]

In this letter, we show how a simple motion-guided nonlinear filter can drastically improve the accuracy of several pedestrian detectors. More specifically, we address the problem of how to pre-filter an image so almost any pedestrian detector will see its false detection rate decrease. First, we roughly identify moving pixels by cumulating their temporal gradient into a motion history image (MHI). The MHI is then used in conjunction with a nonlinear filter to filter out background details while leaving untouched foreground moving objects. We also show how a feedback loop as well as a merging procedure between the filtered and the unfiltered frames can further improve results. We tested our method on 26 videos from 6 categories. The results show that for a given miss rate, filtering out background details reduces the false detection rate by a factor of up to 69.6 times. The ultracool dwarf star TRAPPIST-1 hosts seven Earth-size transiting planets, some of which could harbor liquid water on their surfaces. Ultraviolet observations are essential to measuring their high-energy irradiation and searching for photodissociated water escaping from their putative atmospheres. Our new observations of the TRAPPIST-1 Lyα line during the transit of TRAPPIST-1c show an evolution of the star emission over three months, preventing us from assessing the presence of an extended hydrogen exosphere. Based on the current knowledge of the stellar irradiation, we investigated the likely history of water loss in the system. Planets b to d might still be in a runaway phase, and planets within the orbit of TRAPPIST-1g could have lost more than 20 Earth oceans after 8 Gyr of hydrodynamic escape. However, TRAPPIST-1e to h might have lost less than three Earth oceans if hydrodynamic escape stopped once they entered the habitable zone (HZ). We caution that these estimates remain limited by the large uncertainty on the planet masses. They likely represent upper limits on the actual water loss because our assumptions maximize the X-rays to ultraviolet-driven escape, while photodissociation in the upper atmospheres should be the limiting process. Late-stage outgassing could also have contributed significant amounts of water for the outer, more massive planets after they entered the HZ. While our results suggest that the outer planets are the best candidates to search for water with the JWST, they also highlight the need for theoretical studies and complementary observations in all wavelength domains to determine the nature of the TRAPPIST-1 planets and their potential habitability. Movement patterns during landing have been suggested to be related to injury risk. The purpose of this study was to determine the inter-session reliability of kinematic variables and ground reaction forces during landing in a population of male recreational athletes after a counter movement jump. Both unipodal and bipodal landings were evaluated. Furthermore, the possibility to improve landing reliability with a verbal instruction was also studied. Twenty- four male volunteers with no history of lower-extremity trauma were randomly assigned to two groups (with and without verbal landing instruction). An optoelectronic 3D system and force plates were used to measure the lower-limb joint angles and the ground reaction forces during landing. Intraclass correlation values show moderate to excellent inter-session reliability for the bipodal task (ICC average: 0.80, range: 0.46 to 0.97) and poor to excellent reliability for the unipodal task (ICC average: >0.75, range: 0.20 to 0.95). However, large standard errors of measurement values at the ankle joint at impact (27.6 ± 11.5°) and for the vertical ground reaction forces (394 ± 1091 N) show that some variables may not be usable in practice. The verbal instruction had a negative effect on the reliability of unipodal landing but improved the reliability of bipodal landing. These findings show that the reliability of a landing task is influenced by its motor complexity as well as the instruction given to the subject. [less ▲]

In Thailand, stony soils are mainly located in hillside areas. Even though they have physical limitations for agricultural use and they are exposed to a risk for soil erosion, they continue to be used for crop production. A good understanding of the hydraulic characteristics of soils containing an important fraction of rock fragments is crucial for soil and water management in these areas. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of different rock fragment contents on effective hydraulic properties of skeletal soil with a clay content lower than 35% using measurements of the water retention curve and the hydraulic conductivity. A tension infiltrometer was used to determine the field hydraulic conductivity at four pressure heads (h) of 0, − 30, − 60 and − 120 mm. Soil water retention was determined on a pressure plate between − 33 and − 1500 kPa. Finally, the Hydrus-1D was used to predict soil moisture dynamics using the obtained effective hydraulic parameters. The results show a decreasing water retention capacity with increasing rock fragment content. The saturated hydraulic conductivity decreased with increasing stone contents from 0 to 20%, but then increased for increasing stone content. Contradicting behavior can be observed using field and lab measurements, clearly exposing the need for a better understanding of the functioning of stony soils. [less ▲]

Bien que les solutions retenues de part et d’autre de l’Atlantique semblent divergentes a priori – absolutisme de l’immunité du juge au Québec et relativisation de celle-ci en Belgique –, un examen plus approfondi révèle que les incidences pratiques ne sont pas aussi radicalement opposées. Certes, l’État belge peut engager sa responsabilité civile en présence d’une faute du juge, ce qui ne saurait être admis au Québec , mais les modalités de l’action civile que la jurisprudence belge a retenues (spécialement la condition de recevabilité et la notion de faute caractérisée) limitent fortement l’ampleur du contentieux dans ce domaine. Par ailleurs, au Québec, on relève un infléchissement – purement théorique, car aucun cas concret où la responsabilité civile du juge a été retenue n’existe à l’heure actuelle – du principe de l’immunité absolue du juge dans le cadre de sa responsabilité civile personnelle, lorsqu’il agit sans compétence, tout en sachant ne pas avoir compétence d’agir ainsi. Résumé - Introduction : A l’origine, les cartes conceptuelles ont été conçues pour faciliter l’apprentissage des étudiants en les aidant à organiser leurs connaissances sous la forme de schémas. Or, dans le domaine de l’ETP, elles sont principalement utilisées dans un but d’évaluation pour un diagnostic éducatif ou en fin d’éducation, et moins souvent comme technique d’aide à l’apprentissage. Objectifs : L’étude vise à : (1) évaluer les effets d’un mode d’utilisation des cartes conceptuelles, en petit groupes et en pratique courante ; (2) à partir des données, réfléchir aux conditions qui pourraient faciliter ou limiter leur utilisation. Méthodes : Sept groupes de maximum 5 patients ont bénéficié d’une séance d’une durée d’une heure selon la méthode habituelle (N=30) et sept autres groupes avec la technique de la carte conceptuelle (N=29). Les connaissances des patients ont été évaluées avant (PRE) et le lendemain de la séance (POST) à l’aide d’un test qui comportait 30 questions Vrai-Faux avec degrés de certitude (15 questions de connaissance, 6 de jugement portant sur des menus et 9 relevant de 3 mini situations problèmes requérant des décisions). La satisfaction des patients a été évaluée par questionnaire et la perception des animatrices par l’utilisation d’un journal de bord et lors d’un entretien collectif. Résultats : Le pourcentage de Réponses Correctes (%RC) au test a augmenté dans les deux ensembles de groupes (gain 5%, gain relatif 17,6%) sans différence statistiquement significative (à P.05) entre les deux ensembles. Les gains sont plus importants pour les questions de connaissance (gain relatif 28,8%) que pour celles sur les situations problèmes (14,4%) et sur les menus (2,8%). Les degrés de certitude mettent en évidence que les réponses nuisibles (erreurs avec certitude élevée), aux alentours de 20% au départ, n’ont pas régressé au post-test. Diverses hypothèses sont avancées pour expliquer ces résultats. Les taux de satisfaction des patients vis-à-vis de la séance d’éducation sont supérieurs à 89% quelle que soit la méthode utilisée. Les groupes animés avec la carte conceptuelle ainsi que les animatrices ont souligné l’intérêt de celle-ci pour hiérarchiser et clarifier les connaissances. La qualité de la formation à la technique des cartes conceptuelles constitue une des principales conditions pour leur utilisation. Conclusion : Des principes sont proposés pour guider de nouvelles recherches destinées à vérifier dans quelles conditions l’utilisation de la carte conceptuelle comme technique pédagogique en ETP améliore la capacité de résolution de problème. Using data mining methods, this paper presents a new means of identifying freshmen's profiles likely to face major difficulties to complete their first academic year. Academic failure is a relevant issue at a time when post-secondary education is ever more critical to economic success. We aim at early detection of potential failure using student data available at registration, i.e. school records and environmental factors, with a view to timely and efficient remediation and/or study reorientation. We adapt three data mining methods, namely random forest, logistic regression and artificial neural network algorithms. We design algorithms to increase the accuracy of the prediction when some classes are of major interest. These algorithms are context independent and can be used in different fields. Em seleção genômica (SG), o grande número de marcadores moleculares utilizados, bem como a demanda computacional dos modelos bayesianos, fundamentados nos algoritmos Monte Carlo Via Cadeias de Markov, faz com que as análises exijam semanas ou até meses de processamento. A computação paralela representa uma solução natural para este problema, visto que esta subdividi um algoritmo em várias tarefas independentes, as quais podem ser processadas em paralelo, reduzindo o tempo de processamento. Objetivou-se comparar a eficiência de processamento do método BayesCπ programado em paralelo com o seu algoritmo sequencial padrão. Duas estratégias de paralelização foram estudadas. A primeira envolveu a análise de múltiplas cadeias MCMC em paralelo, e a segunda referiu-se à paralelização de uma única cadeia MCMC. Utilizou-se a biblioteca MPI e o pacote OpenMPI associado ao compilador gfortran para execução em paralelo desses algoritmos. Foram utilizados dados simulados considerando 10.000 marcadores SNPs e 4.100 indivíduos. O algoritmo sequencial padrão foi processado em 77,29 horas. Ao usar múltiplas cadeias em paralelo o processamento foi 77% mais rápido (17,75hs), enquanto que a estratégia de paralelização de uma única cadeia apresentou um ganho de desempenho de 15% (65,37hs). Conclui-se que a computação paralela é eficiente e pode ser aplicada à SG. [less ▲]

Malgré son importance pratique, le processus de normalisation européenne a jusqu’à présent été relativement épargné par la Cour de justice. Toutefois, dans son arrêt James Elliott Construction du 27 octobre 2016, la Cour s’est penchée directement sur le statut juridique des normes techniques européennes. Confirmant que l’interprétation des normes techniques harmonisées, actes non contraignantes, peut être soumise à un examen jurisprudentiel, la Cour a assimilé ces normes adoptées par des organismes privés à des actes des institutions de l’Union européenne. Cet article analyse les impacts de cet arrêt sur le cadre institutionnel de la normalisation européenne. Une telle analyse permettra de conclure que la Cour a interprété ses compétences d’interprétation extensivement afin de rendre possible plus directe son implication dans cette matière. [less ▲]

The goal of this work is to develop a set of simple correlations in order to characterize the optimal off-design performance of an ORC power system. To this end, a 2kWe ORC test rig is investigated as case study and a validated off-design model is used to assess the highest net power generation achievable by the system over its complete range of operating conditions. The off-design model employed is charge-sensitive (i.e. it imposes the total mass of refrigerant in the system) which permits to predict the ORC state (i.e. its pressures, temperatures, mass flow rates, subcooling, etc.) based on the system boundary conditions only. Since such modelling approach and optimization process are time-consuming, a set of simple analytical equations is developed so as to easily predict the optimal performance of the ORC systems. The set of pure spin states with vanishing spin expectation value can be regarded as the set of the less coherent pure spin states. This set can be divided into a finite number of nested subsets on the basis of higher order moments of the spin operators. This subdivision relies on the notion of anticoherent spin state to order t : A spin state is said to be anticoherent to order t if the moment of order k of the spin components along any directions are equal for k = 1,2, . . . ,t . Most spin states are neither coherent nor anticoherent, but can be arbitrary close to one or the other. In or- der to quantify the degree of anticoherence of pure spin states, we introduce the notion of anticoherence measures. By relying on the mapping between spin-j states and symmetric states of 2j spin 1/2 (Majorana representation), we present a systematic way of constructing anticoherence measures to any order. We briefly discuss their connection with measures of quantum coherence. Finally, we illustrate our measures on various spin states and use them to investigate the problem of the existence of anticoherent spin states with degenerated Majorana points. [less ▲]

We have developed an improved Agrobacterium-mediated transformation and rapid regeneration system for four cultivars (‘CO(Ra)-14’, ‘PR-202’, ‘Try-1’ and ‘Paiyur-2’) of finger millet using optimized transformation and direct plant regeneration conditions. The shoot apical meristems (SAMs) were used as explants in this study. Agrobacterium strain EHA105 carrying binary vector pCAMBIA1301 was used to optimize the transformation conditions. Concentration of hygromycin, the optical density of the culture, infection time, age of the explants, co-cultivation period, the concentrations of acetosyringone and antibiotics were optimized to improve the transformation frequency. The highest frequency of mean transient gus expression (85.1%) was achieved in cultivar ‘CO(Ra)-14’. The entire transformation procedure, from initiating SAMs to planting putative transgenic plantlets in the greenhouse, was completed within 45 days with the highest stable transformation frequency of 11.8% for ‘CO(Ra)-14’. PCR, gus staining and Southern blot analyses were performed in T0 and T1 generations to confirm the gene integration. Six events from T0 had a single copy of the transgene and showed a normal Mendelian pattern of segregation. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the high frequency transformation of finger millet by Agrobacterium and subsequent recovery of transgenic plants via direct plant regeneration without a callus phase, in short duration (45 days). The proposed protocol could be supportive in breaking through the bottleneck in transformation and regeneration of finger millet cultivars. [less ▲]

Finding a lack of theoretical grounding, we apply the construct of gender, through expectation states theory, revising the Sharma and Irving model of successor commitment to examine how a socially constructed view of gender shifts and opens up points of view. D’après l’auteur, ces deux entités sont destinées à s’opposer et entrer compétition pour le Heartland, zone de terre étendue et non accessible par la mer. Ce Heartland, situé sur une grande partie du territoire russe et s’étendant en Asie centrale, est actuellement toujours au cœur des tensions entre les grandes puissances. Ainsi des théoriciens tant américains que russes vont reprendre les théories de Mackinder pour analyser mais aussi conseiller la politique étrangère de leurs États. Dès lors, ces auteurs vont appuyer l’importance pour leurs États de maintenir ou reprendre l’hégémonie sur le Heartland. Cet article se penche donc sur l’utilisation, par des académiques contemporains, de la théorie de Mackinder et les recommandations qui en découlent. Among these hypotheses are the values of the transverse loads within ball/race contacts. Those loads are due to the gyroscopic torques. Nowadays, the transverse loads are estimated without any equilibrium criterion by the specialized literature. Moreover, the race control assumption is often employed in addition to the hypotheses made about the transverse loads. The paper describes a new method to compute the transverse loads without using the race control assumption. Then, a correlation between the ball bearing kinematics and the transverse loads is established. It leads to an accurate and efficient computational method to access the Newtonian equilibrium of high speed ball bearings. [less ▲]

Fishways are installed worldwide to facilitate accessibility to functional habitats and to increase the ecological continuity of rivers. Their evaluations are increasing, but complete studies in the field with wild individuals are still scarce. In the lower Bocq River (Belgium), a pool type fishway was installed in 2011. A combined passive‐integrated‐transponder‐tag and radio‐telemetry system was designed and installed downstream of the dam and in the fishway to analyse fine‐scale individual fish behaviour. Three fish species (brown trout, European grayling, and barbel) were captured in the river; n = 125 fish were tagged and released downstream of the fishway. Behavioural metrics were proposed and used in order to attain a comprehensive view on the efficiency of the fishway, including attraction and entrance efficiency, searching and passage delays, and overall and adjusted passage efficiency. The results indicate a major problem in terms of attraction efficiency (48.9% for the trout, 20.5% for the grayling, and 41.2% for the barbel) and time to find the entrance of the fishway (mean 65.1 hr for the trout and 538.9 r for the grayling). For fish that succeed to approach the entrance of the fishway, the passage efficiency was 86.9% for the trout, 55.5% for the grayling, and 7.1% for the barbel. The time taken to cross the structure was reasonable for the salmonids (mean < 1.5 hr for trout and grayling) but very long (21 hr) for the barbel. Our results underline the necessity of a holistic approach to evaluate fishway efficiency using precise comprehensive metrics and hydraulic characterization. [less ▲]

Such altered functions can result from different chemical interactions, beyond agonistic or antagonistic effect at a given receptor. Based on neuroendocrine disruption by polychlorinated biphenyls and bisphenol A, this paper proposes different mechanistic paradigms that can result in adverse health effects. Thanks to a blood sample, Marker-Assisted Selection (MAS) estimates the value of a livestock genetic potential. This technique is proposed as a new means to improve genetic progress. In this paper, we follow this so-called « third revolution » in cattle breeding through a qualitative study in the region where the « Montbeliard » race originates from (Jura and Doubs districts in France). All the farmers and inseminators we met are consistently and simultaneously favourable and reluctant to the introduction of such genomic tools. While MAS challenges their current practices, each of them also tries to assess its possible benefits. These underlying contradictions are the red wire of this investigation. Instead of considering such contradictions as a cognitive deficit, we analyse them as signs of hesitations and tensions and henceforth consider them as clues about the possible consequences of an ongoing innovation. On December 2010, several snow events allowed an exceptional snow cover over Belgium. 27 days with snow cover were observed at Uccle and snow depths of 20, 30 and 70 cm were measured on Christmas 2010 respectively at Uccle, Bierset and Mont Rigi in the Hautes-Fagnes. On December 20, while the entire Belgium was covered by a thick blanket of snow, warmer air invaded the country on December 21. This air was quickly replaced by polar air in Lower and Central Belgium (including Bierset). Heavy snowfalls were observed on December 22 and 23, except in the Upper Ardennes where rainfalls occurred under positive temperature which then dropped to -5°C. This event was due to a strong thermal inversion in the lower layers with warm air at 850 hPa above the Ardennes only. The introduction of the frequency-domain nonlinear subspace identification (FNSI) method in 2013 constitutes one in a series of recent attempts toward developing a realistic, first-generation framework applicable to complex structures. If this method showed promising capabilities when applied to academic structures, it is still confronted with a number of limitations which needs to be addressed. In particular, the removal of nonphysical poles in the identified nonlinear models is a distinct challenge. In the present paper, it is proposed as a first contribution to operate directly on the identified state-space matrices to carry out spurious pole removal. A modal-space decomposition of the state and output matrices is examined to discriminate genuine from numerical poles, prior to estimating the extended input and feedthrough matrices. The final state-space model thus contains physical information only and naturally leads to nonlinear coefficients free of spurious variations. Besides spurious variations due to nonphysical poles, vibration modes lying outside the frequency band of interest may also produce drifts of the nonlinear coefficients. The second contribution of the paper is to include residual terms, accounting for the existence of these modes. The proposed improved FNSI methodology is validated numerically and experimentally using a full-scale structure, the Morane-Saulnier Paris aircraft. [less ▲]

The identification of pathogen-specific volatile metabolic "fingerprints" could lead to the rapid identification of disease-causing organisms either directly from <i>ex vivo</i> patient bio-specimens or from <i>in vitro</i> cultures. In the present study, we have evaluated the volatile metabolites produced by 100 clinical isolates belonging to ten distinct pathogen groups that, in aggregate, account for 90 % of bloodstream infections, 90 % of urinary tract infections, and 80 % of infections encountered in the intensive care unit setting. Headspace volatile metabolites produced in vitro were concentrated using headspace solid-phase microextraction and analyzed via two-dimensional gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC×GC-TOFMS). A total of 811 volatile metabolites were detected across all samples, of which 203 were: 1) detected in 9 or 10 (of 10) isolates belonging to one or more pathogen groups, and 2) significantly more abundant in cultures relative to sterile media. Network analysis revealed a distinct metabolic fingerprint associated with each pathogen group, and analysis via Random Forest (RF) using leave-one-out cross-validation (LOOCV) resulted in a 95 % accuracy for the differentiation between groups. The present findings support the results of prior studies that have reported on the differential production of volatile metabolites across pathogenic bacteria and fungi, and provide additional insight through the inclusion of pathogen groups that have seldom been studied previously, including <i>Acinetobacter</i> spp., coagulase-negative <i>Staphylococcus</i>, and <i>Proteus mirabilis</i>, as well as the utilization of HS-SPME-GC×GC-TOFMS for improved sensitivity and resolution relative to traditional gas chromatography-based techniques. Purpose: This paper describes the theoretical background and main hypotheses at the basis of SAFIR®, a nonlinear finite element software for modeling structures in fire. The paper also explains how to use the software at its full extent. The discussed numerical modeling principles can be applied with other similar software. Approach: Following a general overview of the organization of the software, the thermal analysis part is explained, with the basic equations and the different possibilities to apply thermal boundary conditions (compartment fire, localized fire, etc.). Next, the mechanical analysis part is detailed, including the time integration procedures and the different types of finite elements: beam, truss, shell, spring and solid. Finally, the material laws are described. The software capabilities and limitations are discussed throughout the paper. Findings: By accommodating multiple types of finite elements and materials, by allowing the user to consider virtually any section type and to input the fire attack in multiple forms, the software SAFIR® is a comprehensive tool for investigating the behavior of structures in the fire situation. Meanwhile, being developed exclusively for its well-defined field of application, it remains relatively easy to use. Value: The paper will improve the knowledge of readers (researchers, designers and authorities) about numerical modeling used in structural fire engineering in general and the capabilities of a particular software largely used in the fire engineering community. Background In the last decades, day surgery has steadily and significantly grown in many countries, yet the increase has been uneven. There are large variations in day-surgery activity between countries, but also within countries between hospitals and surgeons. This paper explores the variability in day-care activity for elective surgical procedures between Belgian hospitals. Materials and methods The administrative hospital data of all patients formally admitted in a Belgian hospital for inpatient or day-surgery care between 2011 and 2013 were analysed and summarized in graphs. During 11 expert meetings with ad-hoc surgical expert groups the variability in day-surgery share between hospitals was discussed in depth. Results The variability in day-care share between Belgian hospitals is considerable. For 37 out of 486 elective surgical procedures, the variability ranged between 0 and 100%. High national day-care rates do not preclude room for improvement for certain hospitals as for the majority of these procedures there are “low performers”. According to the consulted clinical experts, the high variability in day-care share may for the greater part be explained by medical team related factors, customs and traditions, the lack of clinical guidelines, financial factors, organisational factors and patient related factors. Conclusion If a further expansion of day surgery is envisaged in Belgium the factors that contribute to the current variability in day-surgery rates between hospitals should be addressed. In addition, a feedback system in which hospitals and health care providers have the figures on their percentage of procedures carried out in day surgery compared to other hospitals and care providers (benchmarking) and the monitoring of a number of quality indicators (e.g. unplanned readmission, unplanned inpatient stay, emergency department visit) should be installed.
