H escape oxidizes and dessicates the Mars atmosphere and surface, providing a key control on the present-day chemistry and long-term evolution of the planet. Recently, large variations in the escape rate of H as a function of season have been reported by several studies, making continued observation of the variation a high priority. We present escape rates derived from Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission Imaging UltraViolet Spectrograph (IUVS) observations of the extended atmosphere of Mars at H Lyman alpha (121.6 nm), which must be interpreted with a coupled density/radiative transfer model owing to the optically thick nature of the emission and the small fraction of H present in the corona on escaping trajectories. We recover densities, temperatures, and escape rates under the assumption of spherical symmetry for multiple periods across MAVEN's mission so far, beginning in December 2014 (escape rates ~4e8/cm2/s). We describe the observed variation and compare it with previously observed seasonal variation in retrieved H escape rates, providing a necessary input for future photochemical modeling studies and estimates of water loss from Mars over its history. The histaminergic system has been speculated to be involved in the inhibitory control of drug reward, H-1 and H-2 antagonists having been found to potentiate conditioned place preference induced by morphine or cocaine. In contrast, the role of H-3 receptors in cocaine-induced place preference is still unknown. The present study tested the effects of thioperamide (0, 10 and 20 mg/kg, i.p.), an H-3 autoreceptor antagonist, on the development of a conditioned place preference induced by cocaine (0, 2 and 8 mg/kg, i.p.) in C57BL/6J mice. Thioperamide was injected 10 min before each cocaine-pairing session. The activity scores recorded on the first cocaine-pairing session were also used to test the effects of thioperamide on cocaine-induced locomotor activity. Thioperamide alone had no reinforcing effects and did not affect the conditioned place preference induced by 8 mg/kg cocaine. However, thioperamide dose-dependently revealed a conditioned place preference induced by 2 mg/kg cocaine, a dose that was inactive per se. Finally, thioperamide dose-dependently potentiated the stimulant effects of cocaine, in spite of its slight hypolocomotor effect when given alone. Our results strongly suggest that H3 antagonists potentiate the stimulant and reinforcing effects of cocaine in mice. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. [less ▲]

In terms of publishing in open access, the transparent handling of the interpretation model is even more crucial. For example, for numerical modelling in groundwater science, such kind of field observatories (i.e. databases) are very useful utilities as those allow an extensive, secured and scientific validated access to data and long time series. In addition, field observatories provide the possibility to use a unique structuration of the data sets used for modelling, which is an additional motivation for data transparency. During the first workshop of the ENIGMA ITN (https://enigma-itn.eu/), the students were introduced in the database of the H+ Network. The H+ Network maintain and coordinate a network of experimental sites in Europe and India, and provide data relevant to the water cycle and transport processes in aquifers. The present guide explains fundamental concepts and the structure of the H+ Network database. In addition, the document provides a step-by-step guideline about inserting and extracting data to and from the database of the H+ Network, respectively. For that a pumping test data set, collected for an alluvial sediment in Europe (Hermalle-sous-Argenteau site by Liege), is used. [less ▲]

Thin conductive magnetic shells are accounted for by means of two different time-domain magnetodynamic finite-element formulations, namely the magnetic field formulation and the magnetic vector potential formulation. Both approaches are an extension of the classical linear frequency-domain thin-shell approximation. The interface conditions for the magnetic field formulation and the vector potential formulation are expressed in terms of the average current density and the average flux density, respectively, together with a number of higher-order components of these quantities. The proposed time-domain thin-shell approaches are validated by means of a 3D magnetodynamic problem. The results are shown to agree well with those obtained with a fine model, whereas the computation time is significantly reduced. [less ▲]

Purpose - The aim of the present paper is to compare the performances of a finite-element perturbation technique applied either to the h- conform magnetodynamic formulation or to its b-conform counterpart in the frame of nondestructive eddy-current testing problems. Design/methodology/approach - In both complementary perturbation techniques, the computation is split into a computation without defect (unperturbed problem) and a computation of the field distorsion due to its presence (perturbation problem). The unperturbed problem is conventionally solved in the complete domain. The source of the perturbation problem is then determined by the projection of the unperturbed solution in a relatively small region surrounding the defect. The discretisation of this reduced domain is chosen independently of the dimensions of the excitation probe and the specimen under study and is thus well adapted to the size of the defect. Findings - The accuracy of the perturbation model is evidenced by comparing the results of the two counterpart formulations to those achieved in the conventional way for different dimensions of the reduced domain. The size of the reduced domain increases with the size of the defect at hand. This proposed sub-domain approach eases considerably the meshing process and speeds-up the computation for different probe positions. Originality/value - At a discrete level, the impedance change due to the defect is efficiently and accurately computed by integrating only over the defect itself and a layer of elements in the reduced domain that touches its boundary. Therefore, no integration of any flux variation in the coils is required. [less ▲]

We have studied the effects of the H-3-receptor agonist (R)alpha-methylhistamine [(R)alpha-MeHA] and the H-3-receptor antagonist thioperamide (Thiop) on basal- and carbachol-stimulated vascular gastrin release (GR) and somatostatin release (SR) by the isolated rat stomach. Carbachol dose-dependently stimulated and inhibited GR and SR, respectively. Maximal stimulation of GR (500 +/- 112 percent of basal; p < .01), and maximal inhibition of SR (-62 +/- 9 percent under basal; p < .01) were obtained with 1 mu M carbachol. Neither (R)alpha-MeHA nor Thiop, up to 10 mu M, affected GR. However, SR was dose-dependently enhanced by Thiop (25 +/- 8 percent for 10 mu M). Carbachol stimulation of GR was strongly inhibited by Thiop (30 +/- 7 percent for 100 nM and 73 +/- 14 percent for 1 CIM), whereas it was potentiated by (R)alpha-MeHA. Carbachol inhibition of SR was reversed by Thiop and (R)alpha-MeHA. However, the reversal effect of (R)alpha-MeHA was prevented by the CCKB/gastrin receptor antagonist PD134308. These results support H-3-receptor regulation of basal and cholinergically-stimulated GR and SR. [less ▲]

We present the first ground-based detection of thermal emission from an exoplanet in the H-band. Using HAWK-I on the VLT, we observed an occultation of WASP-19b by its G8V-type host star. WASP-19b is a Jupiter-mass planet with an orbital period of only 19 h, and thus, being highly irradiated, is expected to be hot. We measure an H-band occultation depth of 0.259[SUP]+0.046[/SUP][SUB]-0.044[/SUB]%, which corresponds to an H-band brightness temperature of T[SUB]H[/SUB] = 2580 ± 125 K. A cloud-free model of the planet's atmosphere, with no redistribution of energy from day-side to night-side, under predicts the planet/star flux density ratio by a factor of two. As the stellar parameters, and thus the level of planetary irradiation, are well-constrained by measurement, it is likely that our model of the planet's atmosphere is too simple. The vector vortex is a coronagraphic imaging mode of the recently commissioned Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme-Adaptive Optics (SCExAO) platform on the 8-m Subaru Telescope. This multi-purpose high-contrast visible and near-infrared (R- to K-band) instrument is not only intended to serve as a VLT-class "planet-imager" instrument in the Northern hemisphere, but also to operate as a technology demonstration testbed ahead of the ELTs-era, with a particular emphasis on small inner-working angle (IWA) coronagraphic capabilities. The given priority to small-IWA imaging led to the early design choice to incorporate focal-plane phase-mask coronagraphs. In this context, a test H-band vector vortex liquid crystal polymer waveplate was provided to SCExAO, to allow a one-to-one comparison of different small-IWA techniques on the same telescope instrument, before considering further steps. Here we present a detailed overview of the vector vortex coronagraph, from its installation and performances on the SCExAO optical bench, to the on-sky results in the extreme AO regime, as of late 2016/early 2017. To this purpose, we also provide a few recent on-sky imaging examples, notably high-contrast ADI detection of the planetary-mass companion \kappa Andromedae b, with a signal-to-noise ratio above 100 reached in less than 10 mn exposure time. By interrelating several texts on the editing and juxtaposition of heterogeneous images by the German essayist and media theorist Hans Magnus Enzensberger, this article brings up to date an aesthetic link between various past and contemporary media devices. The identification of this link makes it possible to free theoretical critique of the evolutionary paradigm of failure and progress (technological and political), opening it up to a set of reciprocal and non-linear insights. In this context, the use of Enzensberger texts also goes beyond any form of periodisation. By engaging a dialogue with his “Jeu de construction pour une théorie des medias” / Constituents of a Theory of the Media (1970), several essays gathered in Médiocrité et folie / Mediocrity and Madness (1988), as well as his recent autobiographical interview Erinnerungen an einen Tumult (2014), this text shows how criticism by the German writer, while constantly revitalised by the emergence of “new” objects (tabloid press, mobile video, television, Internet, smartphones), invites us to overcome any technological determinism to simultaneously consider the political potential of the first activist video groups and platforms dominating the Internet today. Strong gravitational lens systems with time delays between the multiple images allow measurements of time-delay distances, which are primarily sensitive to the Hubble constant that is key to probing dark energy, neutrino physics and the spatial curvature of the Universe, as well as discovering new physics. We present H0LiCOW (H[SUB]0[/SUB] Lenses in COSMOGRAIL's Wellspring), a program that aims to measure H[SUB]0[/SUB] with <3.5 per cent uncertainty from five lens systems (B1608+656, RXJ1131-1231, HE 0435-1223, WFI2033-4723 and HE 1104-1805). We have been acquiring (1) time delays through COSMOGRAIL and Very Large Array monitoring, (2) high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope imaging for the lens mass modelling, (3) wide-field imaging and spectroscopy to characterize the lens environment and (4) moderate-resolution spectroscopy to obtain the stellar velocity dispersion of the lenses for mass modelling. In cosmological models with one-parameter extension to flat Λ cold dark matter, we expect to measure H[SUB]0[/SUB] to <3.5 per cent in most models, spatial curvature Ω[SUB]k[/SUB] to 0.004, w to 0.14 and the effective number of neutrino species to 0.2 (1σ uncertainties) when combined with current cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments. These are, respectively, a factor of ˜15, ˜2 and ˜1.5 tighter than CMB alone. Our data set will further enable us to study the stellar initial mass function of the lens galaxies, and the co-evolution of supermassive black holes and their host galaxies. This program will provide a foundation for extracting cosmological distances from the hundreds of time-delay lenses that are expected to be discovered in current and future surveys. [less ▲]

Galaxies located in the environment or along the line of sight towards gravitational lenses can significantly affect lensing observables, and can lead to systematic errors on the measurement of H[SUB]0[/SUB] from the time-delay technique. We present the results of a systematic spectroscopic identification of the galaxies in the field of view of the lensed quasar HE 0435-1223 using the W. M. Keck, Gemini and ESO-Very Large telescopes. Our new catalogue triples the number of known galaxy redshifts in the direct vicinity of the lens, expanding to 102 the number of measured redshifts for galaxies separated by less than 3 arcmin from the lens. We complement our catalogue with literature data to gather redshifts up to 15 arcmin from the lens, and search for galaxy groups or clusters projected towards HE 0435-1223. We confirm that the lens is a member of a small group that includes at least 12 galaxies, and find 8 other group candidates near the line of sight of the lens. The flexion shift, namely the shift of lensed images produced by high-order perturbation of the lens potential, is calculated for each galaxy/group and used to identify which objects produce the largest perturbation of the lens potential. This analysis demonstrates that (i) at most three of the five brightest galaxies projected within 12 arcsec of the lens need to be explicitly used in the lens models, and (ii) the groups can be treated in the lens model as an external tidal field (shear) contribution. Based on spectroscopy and multiband wide-field observations of the gravitationally lensed quasar HE 0435-1223, we determine the probability distribution function of the external convergence κ[SUB]ext[/SUB] for this system. We measure the under/overdensity of the line of sight towards the lens system and compare it to the average line of sight throughout the Universe, determined by using the CFHTLenS (The Canada France Hawaii Lensing Survey) as a control field. Aiming to constrain κ[SUB]ext[/SUB] as tightly as possible, we determine under/overdensities using various combinations of relevant informative weighting schemes for the galaxy counts, such as projected distance to the lens, redshift and stellar mass. We then convert the measured under/overdensities into a κ[SUB]ext[/SUB] distribution, using ray-tracing through the Millennium Simulation. We explore several limiting magnitudes and apertures, and account for systematic and statistical uncertainties relevant to the quality of the observational data, which we further test through simulations. Our most robust estimate of κ[SUB]ext[/SUB] has a median value κ^med_ext = 0.004 and a standard deviation σ[SUB]κ[/SUB] = 0.025. The measured σ[SUB]κ[/SUB] corresponds to 2.5 per cent relative uncertainty on the time delay distance, and hence the Hubble constant H[SUB]0[/SUB] inferred from this system. The median κ^med_ext value varies by ˜0.005 with the adopted aperture radius, limiting magnitude and weighting scheme, as long as the latter incorporates galaxy number counts, the projected distance to the main lens and a prior on the external shear obtained from mass modelling. This corresponds to just ˜0.5 per cent systematic impact on H[SUB]0[/SUB]. The availability of a well-constrained κ[SUB]ext[/SUB] makes HE 0435-1223 a valuable system for measuring cosmological parameters using strong gravitational lens time delays. [less ▲]

Strong gravitational lenses with measured time delays between the multiple images allow a direct measurement of the time-delay distance to the lens, and thus a measure of cosmological parameters, particularly the Hubble constant, H[SUB]0[/SUB]. We present a blind lens model analysis of the quadruply imaged quasar lens HE 0435-1223 using deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging, updated time-delay measurements from the COSmological MOnitoring of GRAvItational Lenses (COSMOGRAIL), a measurement of the velocity dispersion of the lens galaxy based on Keck data, and a characterization of the mass distribution along the line of sight. HE 0435-1223 is the third lens analysed as a part of the H[SUB]0[/SUB] Lenses in COSMOGRAIL's Wellspring (H0LiCOW) project. We account for various sources of systematic uncertainty, including the detailed treatment of nearby perturbers, the parametrization of the galaxy light and mass profile, and the regions used for lens modelling. We constrain the effective time-delay distance to be D_{Δ t}= 2612_{-191}^{+208} Mpc, a precision of 7.6 per cent. From HE 0435-1223 alone, we infer a Hubble constant of H[SUB]0[/SUB] = 73.1_{-6.0}^{+5.7} km s^{-1 Mpc^{-1}} assuming a flat ΛCDM cosmology. The cosmographic inference based on the three lenses analysed by H0LiCOW to date is presented in a companion paper (H0LiCOW Paper V). [less ▲]

The combined analysis is performed by forward modelling the individual data sets through a Bayesian hierarchical framework, and it is kept blind until the very end to prevent experimenter bias. After unblinding, the inferred distances imply a Hubble constant H[SUB]0[/SUB] = 68.8^{+5.4}_{-5.1} km s[SUP]-1[/SUP] Mpc[SUP]-1[/SUP], assuming a flat Λ cold dark matter cosmology with uniform prior on Ω[SUB]m[/SUB] in [0.05, 0.5]. The precision of our cosmographic measurement with the doubly imaged quasar SDSS 1206+4332 is comparable with those of quadruply imaged quasars and opens the path to perform on selected doubles the same analysis as anticipated for quads. Our analysis is based on a completely independent lensing code than our previous three H0LiCOW systems and the new measurement is fully consistent with those. We provide the analysis scripts paired with the publicly available software to facilitate independent analysis (footnote with link to www.h0licow.org). The consistency between blind measurements with independent codes provides an important sanity check on lens modelling systematics. By combining the likelihoods of the four systems under the same prior, we obtain H[SUB]0[/SUB] = 72.5^{+2.1}_{-2.3} km s[SUP]-1[/SUP] Mpc[SUP]-1[/SUP]. This measurement is independent of the distance ladder and other cosmological probes. [less ▲]
