A process has been developed to enable the large scale production of pure TiO2 films deposited on 316L stainless steel in order to get an easy-to-clean surface. This large scale process requires an easy aqueous sol-gel procedure for the synthesis of the TiO2 sol. This synthesis has been simplified to facilitate the extrapolation towards an industrial scale. Results of TEM, photocatalytic properties, film hydrophilicity, and texture obtained with the simplified aqueous sol-gel synthesis (IsoP-TiO2 synthesis) show similar properties to those obtained with the standard aqueous sol-gel synthesis of TiO2 (HAc-TiO2 synthesis) developed previously. Only X-Ray Diffraction patterns showed differences, with the presence of anatase-brookite phases in IsoP-TiO2 synthesis while anatase phase only was observed in HAc-TiO2 synthesis. Both the aqueous sol-gel synthesis of pure TiO2 and the film deposition on steel by roll-coating have been successfully extrapolated to a larger scale. The photocatalytic activity and the hydrophilicity of the film were found to be unchanged when compared to films produced at a laboratory scale, thus validating the production of an efficient easy-to-clean material. Although some problems are still to be solved, this study is a hopeful first step in the development of a large scale process for self-cleaning steel production. [less ▲]

Parmi les nombreux mots traditionnellement étiquetés comme «arabismes» figurent des cas relevant de classes diverses. Nous jetons ici un regard diachronique et global sur cette classe de lexèmes particuliers, parmi lesquels nous distinguons les emprunts dits directs, émanant de contacts récurrents et prolongés entre populations arabophones et populations francophones, et les emprunts dits indirects, qu'en toute rigueur nous devrions exclure de notre étude en vertu de la défiance légitime envers l'etimologia remota. Nous tentons cependant de montrer que cette méfiance mérite d'être nuancée à l'aune des conclusions que cette pratique lexicographique permet de tirer sur les mouvements socio-historiques qu'elle illustre. En effet, de l'examen des itinéraires et des époques d'emprunt se dégage l'histoire des relations entre monde arabophone et monde roman. [less ▲]

The surface ocean is everywhere saturated with calcium carbonate (CaCO[SUB]3[/SUB]). Yet increasing atmospheric CO[SUB]2[/SUB] reduces ocean pH and carbonate ion concentration and thus the level of saturation. Here we show with ocean data and models that due to this anthropogenic acidification, some surface waters will become undersaturated within decades. When atmospheric CO[SUB]2[/SUB] reaches 550 ppmv, in year 2050 under the IS92a business-as-usual scenario, Southern Ocean surface waters begin to become undersaturated with respect to aragonite, a metastable form of CaCO[SUB]3[/SUB]. By 2100 as atmospheric CO[SUB]2[/SUB] reaches 788 ppmv, undersaturation extends throughout the entire Southern Ocean (<60[SUP]o[/SUP]S) and into the surbarctic Pacific. Meanwhile, Weddell Sea surface waters also become undersaturated with respect to calcite, the stable form of CaCO[SUB]3[/SUB]. These transient changes are much larger than seasonal, interannual, and decadal variability. They threaten high-latitude aragonite secreting organisms including cold-water corals, which provide essential fish habitat, and shelled pteropods, i.e., zooplankton that serve as an abundant food source for marine predators.
