Since the Earth Summit in Rio, declining biodiversity has become a subject of general concern for many countries. To counter these negative trends, government nature policies in Europe at least are now thought out primarily in terms of networks. They concern new areas outside nature reserves, new players and new management strategies. Consequently, these policies should themselves become the subject of new public debate. Our study concerns the analysis of the forms used to collect the data required to set up the European Union's Natura 2000 network and maps drawn as part of the Council of Europe's Pan-European Ecological Network strategy. The aim of this article, which takes the perspective developed by the sociology of science, will be to show how the forms and maps used in these new nature policies produce knowledge that precedes policy discussions to search for the best possible socio-political compromises. In other words, the knowledge that is collected in and by means of these documents, forms and maps offers a cognitive way of framing the subsequent public debates. [less ▲]

In an Enterprise network, several companies interact to produce families of goods. Each member company seeks to optimise his own production and inventory policy to maximise his profit. These objectives are generally antagonistic and can lead to contradictory choices in the context of a network with a high degree of local decisional autonomy. To avoid a global loss of economic efficiency, the network should be equipped with a coordination mechanism. The present article describes a coordination contract negotiated between a manufacturer and a supplier. The purpose of the negotiation is to determine the price of the supplied intermediate goods and the delay penalty in case of a late delivery. For a manufacturer with a dominant contracting position, the outcome of the negotiation can be computed as a Stackelberg equilibrium point. Under the resulting contract, the two-stage supply chain reaches globally optimal running conditions with the maximal possible profit obtained by the manufacturer and the smallest acceptable profit obtained by the supplier. In an Enterprise network, several companies interact to produce families of goods. Each member company seeks to optimize his own production and inventory policy to maximize his profit. An enterprise network is analyzed from the viewpoint of an end-product manufacturer who receives customer orders and organises his production and supply policy so as to minimize the sum of his average holding cost and average stock-out cost. For each main component to be ordered, the producer has several possible suppliers. The arrivals of customers’ orders are random and delivery times from suppliers are also supposed random. This supply system is represented as a queuing network and the producer uses a base-stock inventory control policy that keeps constant the position inventory level (current inventory level + pending replenishment orders). The decision variables are the reference position inventory level and the percentages of orders sent to the different suppliers. In the queuing network model, the percentages of orders are implemented as Bernoulli branching parameters. A close-form expression of the expected cost criterion is obtained as a complex non-linear function of decision variables. A decomposed approach is proposed for solving the optimization problem in an approximate manner. The quality of the approximate solution is evaluated by comparison to the exact solution, which can be computed numerically in some simple cases, in particular in the two-supplier case. Numerical applications show the important economic advantage for the producer of sending orders to several suppliers rather than to a single one. [less ▲]

The objective of this study is to make an inventory of the honey production in the counties of Bejaia and Tizi-Ouzou in northeastern Algeria. To achieve this, a survey was carried out on 31 beekeepers (14 in Bejaia and 17 in Tizi-Ouzou). The survey shows a social, cultural and religious role for 61.29% of the beekeepers. The beekeeping is primarily held by men (93.55%). It is the basic source of income for 64.52% of the respondents. The average age of the beekeepers is 42.90years (Min-Max: 28-67 years, Median: 40.5 years). The main products of the hive are honey (100%), swarms (16.13%), royal jelly (9.68%) and propolis (9.68%). The average honey production per hive is 7.70kg (Min-Max: 0.4-15kg hives, Median: 10kg). The average number of hives per beekeeper is 42.20 hives (Min-Max: 3-300 hives, Median: 17.50 hives). The average selling price of one kg of honey is 4000.00 DA / kg (Min-Max: 2000-5000DA; Median: 4000DA). The phenotype of the bee reported by 74.19% of the surveys is of small size with a long body and dark pigmentation corresponding to the breed “Apis mellifera intermissa”. Two apiculturists described another phenotype corresponding to the “Apis mellifera major”. The factors behind the motivations for beekeeping are consumption of honey (100%), income generation (90.32%), hobby (58.06%) and conservation of biodiversity (22.58%). The multiple constraints associated with several diseases, notably Varroase (mentioned by 80.65% of beekeepers), cause difficulties for the breeders. Thus they cannot profit maximum from beekeeping. Other constraints which were reported are; forest fires (35.48%), wasps (32.26%), absence of beekeeping professionals or technicians (29.03%), harsh and cold winters with snow (19.35%), high density of hives in the region (16.13%) and uncontrolled spreading of pesticides and crop protection products at farms (12.90%). The economic situation of the Algerian beekeepers can be optimized by improving the production potential of the local bees. [less ▲]

We explore three problems in this thesis and develop solution methods for each problem. First, an inventory routing problem for a perishable product with stochastic demands is considered and different approximate solution methods are developed to solve. Based on computational experiments, the solution methods are compared in terms of average profit, service level, and actual freshness. The impact of relevant parameters on the performance of the solution methods is investigated. Managerial insights are drawn by analyzing the impact of shelf life and store capacity on the profit. The value of considering uncertainty and the value of accessing full information are measured. The computational results highlight that a simple ordering policy can often replace a more sophisticated solution method, while preserving the same efficacy. Second, we introduce a vehicle routing problem (VRP) where a set of stores places deterministic orders to a logistics service provider (LSP) for two successive periods. Deliveries requested in each period can be shifted by the LSP to the other period, possibly with modified quantities. The LSP incurs a penalty for any diversion from the initial delivery period. The data regarding shifted delivery quantities and penalties are provided by the stores. From the perspective of the LSP, diversions could be beneficial if savings in the routing costs outweigh the penalties. In this work, we introduce a new two-period VRP model where the LSP seeks to improve its total cost, compared to solving two independent VRPs with fixed delivery periods, by allowing deliveries to be shifted. We solve this model to optimality by an efficient branch-and-price algorithm implementing several cutting-edge techniques. We draw algorithmic and managerial insights based on our test instances. Third, a two-period VRP is considered where the orders placed by stores for each period can be partially shifted to the other period, given that the sum of the delivery quantities in two periods to each customer is fixed. A linear penalization of delivery shifts is assumed based on the quantity shifted. We represent two mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulations for the problem. A column-row generation algorithm to solve the LP-relaxation of the first formulation is developed. To solve the LP-relaxation of the second formulation, we develop a column generation algorithm. Details of two label-setting algorithms to solve the pricing problems of the column-row generation and column generation algorithms are discussed. Numerical results can be compared with a similar model in which only full delivery shifts are allowed. [less ▲]

RTIs managements are quite diverse. Research efforts are thus needed in the areas of RTI acquisition; warehouse layout, inventory routing problem; production planning and control; tracking and scheduling. In this paper, the inventory-routing problem for the management of RTIs developed in Iassinovskaia et al. (2017) has been enriched by adding constraints referring to specificities that can be encountered in real life, such as minimum threshold or a maximum ceiling of RTIs to be returned or durability. Durability can be characterized by the number of times an RTI can be used which is called maximum number of lives n. For instances, glass bottle can be used 25 times, wooden pallet 50 times and Crates for bottles 120 times (Geyer et al., 2007). [less ▲]

Reducing environmental impact, related regulations and potential for operational benefits are the main reasons why companies share their returnable transport items (RTIs) among the different partners of a closed-loop supply chain. In this paper, we consider a producer, located at a depot, who has to distribute his products packed in RTIs to a set of customers. Customers define a time window wherein the service can begin. The producer is also in charge of the collection of empty RTIs for reuse in the next production cycle. Each partner has a storage area composed of both empty and loaded RTI stock, as characterized by initial levels and maximum storage capacity. As deliveries and returns are performed by a homogeneous fleet of vehicles that can carry simultaneously empty and loaded RTIs, this research addresses a pickup and delivery inventory-routing problem within time windows (PDIRPTW) over a planning horizon. A mixed-integer linear program is developed and tested on small-scale instances. To handle more realistic large-scale problems, a cluster first-route second matheuristic is proposed. [less ▲]
