Plant phenological development is orchestrated through subtle changes in photoperiod, temperature, soil moisture and nutrient availability. Presently, the exact timing of plant development stages and their response to climate and management practices are crudely represented in land surface models. As visual observations of phenology are laborious, there is a need to supplement long-term observations with automated techniques such as those provided by digital repeat photography at high temporal and spatial resolution. We present the first synthesis from a growing observational network of digital cameras installed on towers across Europe above deciduous and evergreen forests, grasslands and croplands, where vegetation and atmosphere CO2 fluxes are measured continuously. Using colour indices from digital images and using piecewise regression analysis of time series, we explored whether key changes in canopy phenology could be detected automatically across different land use types in the network. The piecewise regression approach could capture the start and end of the growing season, in addition to identifying striking changes in colour signals caused by flowering and management practices such as mowing. Exploring the dates of green-up and senescence of deciduous forests extracted by the piecewise regression approach against dates estimated from visual observations, we found that these phenological events could be detected adequately (RMSE < 8 and 11 days for leaf out and leaf fall, respectively). We also investigated whether the seasonal patterns of red, green and blue colour fractions derived from digital images could be modelled mechanistically using the PROSAIL model parameterised with information of seasonal changes in canopy leaf area and leaf chlorophyll and carotenoid concentrations. From a model sensitivity analysis we found that variations in colour fractions, and in particular the late spring `green hump' observed repeatedly in deciduous broadleaf canopies across the network, are essentially dominated by changes in the respective pigment concentrations. Using the model we were able to explain why this spring maximum in green signal is often observed out of phase with the maximum period of canopy photosynthesis in ecosystems across Europe. Coupling such quasi-continuous digital records of canopy colours with co-located CO2 flux measurements will improve our understanding of how changes in growing season length are likely to shape the capacity of European ecosystems to sequester CO2 in the future. We apply Benacerraf’s distinction between mathematical ontology and mathematical practice (or the structures mathematicians use in practice) to examine contrasting interpretations of infinitesimal mathematics of the seventeenth and eighteenth century, in the work of Bos, Ferraro, Laugwitz, and others. We detect Weierstrass’s ghost behind some of the received historiography on Euler’s infinitesimal mathematics, as when Ferraro proposes to understand Euler in terms of a Weierstrassian notion of limit and Fraser declares classical analysis to be a “primary point of reference for understanding the eighteenth-century theories.” Meanwhile, scholars like Bos and Laugwitz seek to explore Eulerian methodology, practice, and procedures in a way more faithful to Euler’s own. Euler’s use of infinite integers and the associated infinite products are analyzed in the context of his infinite product decomposition for the sine function. Euler’s principle of cancellation is compared to the Leibnizian transcendental law of homogeneity. The Leibnizian law of continuity similarly finds echoes in Euler. We argue that Ferraro’s assumption that Euler worked with a classical notion of quantity is symptomatic of a post-Weierstrassian placement of Euler in the Archimedean track for the development of analysis, as well as a blurring of the distinction between the dual tracks noted by Bos. Interpreting Euler in an Archimedean conceptual framework obscures important aspects of Euler’s work. Such a framework is profitably replaced by a syntactically more versatile modern infinitesimal framework that provides better proxies for his inferential moves. [less ▲]

This article reflects on the profound complexities of translating and interpreting ‘grief’, and emotions and responses to death more broadly, in multilingual, cross-cultural contexts. Drawing on qualitative research conducted in urban Senegal, West Africa, we discuss the exchange of meanings surrounding grief and death through language, including the process of translation, in its broadest sense, between multiple languages (Wolof, French, English). Our experiences demonstrate the crucial importance of involving interpreters and field researchers throughout the research process, to gain fundamental insight into the cultural nuances of indigenous languages and how these are translated and potentially re-framed in the process. We reflect on our iterative process of discussing emerging interpretations with participants in follow-up workshops and with our interpreter. This approach helped shed light on language use surrounding ‘grief’ and how this is bound up with wider socio-cultural norms which make particular emotions surrounding death and experiences/meanings of death and bereavement possible and ‘speak-able’. Our research calls for greater recognition in death and bereavement studies of the cultural specificity of conceptual frameworks developed in minority European socio-linguistic contexts and demonstrates the need for greater engagement with theoretical, empirical and methodological insights gained in diverse cultural contexts in the Majority world. Um Abschätzungen der S-Wellengeschwindigkeit für die verschiedenen geologischen Formationen in der Region zu erhalten, wurde eine grosse Anzahl von Arraymessungen durchgeführt. Das Ziel einer solchen Messung ist die Bestimmung der Phasengeschwindigkeit der Rayleighwellen (Fundamentalmode und höhere Moden) als Funktion der Frequenz. Aus der Phasengeschwindigkeit lassen sich Modelle für die S-Wellengeschwindigkeit der lokalen Struktur invertieren. Bei der Inversion werden sowohl geologische Informationen, als auch die gemessene Eigenfrequenz der Lockersedimente und die Eigenschaften der gemessenen H/V Kurve verwendet. Ergänzt wurden die Messungen des Schweizerischen Erdbebendienstes durch Messungen des Bureau de Recherche Geologique et Miniere (BRGM) und des Leibniz Instituts für Geowissenschaftliche Gemeinschaftsaufgaben, Hannover (GGA). Abbildung 1 zeigt die Standorte der durchgeführten Messungen im Untersuchungsgebiet. To investigate metabolic relationships between different brain regions in schizophrenia, we measured regional brain metabolism using positron emission tomography (PET) and [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) in 15 unmedicated schizophrenic patients and 15 healthy subjects. We analyzed correlations between glucose metabolism data of multiple brain regions using factorial analysis and correlation coefficient comparisons. Absolute regional intercorrelations in schizophrenic brains were found to be significantly stronger than in controls, in relationship to the greater variability of metabolic rates in schizophrenic patients. Variability of normalized metabolic rates and regional intercorrelations were not significantly different between schizophrenic patients and control subjects. We conclude that a global metabolic factor accounts for the variability of metabolic data in untreated schizophrenia. [less ▲]

The relationship between the EU and the Latin-American region belongs to the logics of interregionalism. This article approaches this relation especially in what the Latin-American integration is concerned. In this way, in a first moment, a conceptual panorama (from the academic implications of region, regionalism and interregionalism, among others) is offered. By the means of the documentary method, the existence of an EU’s interregional strategy and its possible Americanization was verified. The obtained results showed: the existence of the UE interregional strategy as well as its concretization in the negotiation of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) EU – CAN. The two major conclusions of this article were: First, there is a slight Americanization of this interregional European strategy. The second conclusion is that a deepening of the international presence of Europe as regional actor is observed. It means the deepening of the EU’s soft power. [less ▲]

Indeed, genetic and environmental (pollution, occupational and infectious) factors, also influence the risk of developing COPD. Finaly COPD must be considered as the clinical consequence of multiple complex interactions between environmental factors and genetic susceptibility. The latter is not clearly understood, with the exception of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. In this article, we present the different aspects of this complex disease which is primarily environmental. The relationship between hypertension and atherosclerosis has been illustrated by epidemiological, clinical and experimental observations. Typical atherosclerotic lesions develop in arterial wall when hypercholesterolaemia is present. Hypertension aggravates these lesions by causing vascular structural changes. In clinical studies, however, the correction of high blood pressure does not decrease the incidence of coronary heart disease. Several hypotheses have been formulated to account for this observation: one is that reversibility of the structural vascular changes induced by hypertension is not complete when the blood pressure is lowered; another is that antihypertensive drugs have a deleterious effect on the vascular wall.
