The essential oil of Lavandula angustifolia was investigated for its biocide activity against Acyrtosiphum pisum by fumigation. The oil was characterised by GC-MS revealing that linalool was the most abundant component (38.57%), followed by linalyl acetate (29.95%), 1,8-cineole (13,66%), camphor (13,13%), -pinene (3,14%) and terpinene-4-ol (1,54%). The Mortality was measured upon treatment with oil concentrations ranging from 5 to 25 µl.l-1 of air. The mortality of aphids increased with oil concentration and LC50 values were determined to be 11.2 µl.l-1 of air. The full mixture was also prepared and toxicity was compared with individual constituents. The results showed that the presence of all constituents were necessary to equal the toxicity of the natural oils L. angustifolia oil can provide valuable pesticide activity with significantly lower LC50 values [less ▲]

The insecticidal activity of Jatropha curcas has been evaluated on various crop pests. Oil concentrations of 0.5, 1, 2.5, 5, 10 and 15% were first tested on the black bean aphid (Aphis fabae Scop.) as part of an efficacy test conducted in the laboratory. During a second stage, the insecticidal efficacy of 5 and 7.5% oil concentrations was evaluated on the main pests infesting cowpea crops (Vigna unguiculata L.) as part of a field test conducted at the University of Niamey (Niger). The results obtained in the two tests demonstrate the biocidal effect of the treatments applied, which increases with the concentration. On the black bean aphid, the biocidal effect increases during the hours following the application of oil before reaching a peak after 4 days. On cowpeas, J. curcas oil concentrations of 5% and 7.5% make it possible to reduce the level of attack by aphids (Aphis craccivora) by 10 and 50% respectively compared to the control. A 50% and 75% fall in the number of thrips (Megalurothrips sjöstedti) and bugs (Anoplocnemis curvipes), respectively, can be observed under the same conditions. This treatment made it possible to greatly increase yields compared to the untreated control. [less ▲]

Surfactin C14, surfactin C15, and iturin C15 are lipopeptides purified from Bacillus subtilis (S499 strain). They were incorporated into the artificial diet of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster to assess their potential insecticidal activities. Surfactins with long fatty acid chains (C14 and C15) had an insecticidal effect on the fruit fly, D. melanogaster. On the contrary, iturin was not toxic to D. melanogaster. At 100 ppm, surfactin C14 and C15 caused 85.4 and 92.6% adult mortality, respectively, after a one-day exposure. F1 progeny fly emergence inhibition by C14 and C15 were 79.8 and 91.3%, respectively. To check whether the biocide activity of lipopeptides was due to their surface-active properties, detergent Triton X100, SDS, CTAB, and Tween 80 were tested. No adult mortality was recorded with the detergents but Triton X100 and SDS showed F1 progeny emergence inhibition similar to that of surfactins. Jatropha curcas has been introduced into Niger since 2004 by International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT). This plant is cultivated for its oil, which can be used as a Biofuel. Through direct and indirect insect collection methods, an inventory of the insect associated with J. curcas has been conducted in Western Niger during two rainy seasons (from June to October) in 2010 and 2011. We have identified insects belonging to the following families: Acrididae (Oedaleus senegalensis Krauss, 15 Oedaleus nigeriensis Uvarov, Heteracris leani Uvarov, Catantops stramineus Walker, Parga cyanoptera Uvarov, and Acanthacris ruficornis citrina Audinet-Serville), Pyrgomorphidae (Poekilocerus bufonius hieroglyphicus Klug), Cetoniidae (Pachnoda interrupta Olivier, Pachnoda marginata aurantia Herbst, Pachnoda sinuata Heinrich and McClain, and Rhabdotis sobrina Gory and Percheron), Meloidae (Decapotoma lunata Pallas), Pentatomidae (Agonoscelis versicoloratus Dallas, Nezara viridula Linn, and Antestia sp. Kirkaldy), Coreidae (Leptoglossus membranaceus Fabricius and Cletus trigonus Thunberg), and Scutelleridae (Calidea panaethiopica Kirkaldy). Origin and 20 potential impact on J. curcas of all these insect species are presented and discussed. The lower insect’s diversity indexes are observed in 2010 and 2011 for Niamey, Saga, and Gaya because of semi-arid character of the Sahelian area. [less ▲]

Tropical basil is an aromatic leafy vegetable used for its medicinal and therapeutic properties in numerous countries in West Africa (Benin, Nigeria, Togo, etc.). In Benin, it is produced on almost all urban and periurban garden throughout the year for fresh market. Until now there are few or nearly no publications about the arthropod community of this specie, even less in the context of Benin. Thus, to assess this community, basil plots were mowed using a sweep net in three localities (Ouidah, Togba and Sèmè) of southern Benin. Preliminary results focus on the different insect families that colonized tropical basil in southern Benin environmental conditions. These include: Aphididae (Homoptera), Cercopidae (Homoptera), Chrysomelidae (Coleoptera), Coccinelledidea (Coleoptera), Meloidae (Coleoptera), Braconidae (Hymenoptera), Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera), Formicidae (Hymenoptera), Vespidae (Hymenoptera), Apoidae (Hymenoptera), Reduviidae (Heteroptera), Pentatomidae (Heteroptera), Pyrgomorphidae (Orthoptera), Acrididae (Orthoptera), Syrphidae (Diptera), Diopsidae (Diptera). Among these families, there are pests: Aphis gossypii G. (Homoptera: Aphididae), Zonocerus variegatus L. (Orthoptera: Pyrgomorphidae), etc.; predators: Ischiodon aegyptius W. (Diptera: Syrphidae), Cheilomenes spp. (Coleoptera: Coccinelledidea), Rhynocoris spp. (Heteroptera: Reduviidae), etc.; parasitoids and pollinators. From this study, it appeared that there is a large diversity of families and functional groups (pests, predators, parasitoids and pollinators) associated with tropical basil . Moreover, the presence of natural enemies could be an advantage for farmers in intercropping systems. This would help reduce the use of synthetic insecticides. This result, which is a first knowledge of the insect fauna associated with tropical basil under the environmental conditions of Southern Benin, will be supplemented by a spatio temporal study to assess the variability and the dynamics of this insect fauna. Edible insects are systematically targeted as a major future food for European consumers but success in introducing entomophagy in Western society depends on factors governing consumers’ attitudes towards insect-based products. Effectively, as for sushi in the 2000s, edible insects are considered as new food products in Europe and are deeply related to a fear or a reject feeling by consumers called “food neophobia“. Consequently, several studies have been achieved to face the actual aversion of European consumers for insects. These studies principally tried to understand the insect-related neophobia, to highlight positive arguments for entomophagy development and also to test possible ways of integration of insects as food. The purpose of this chapter is to get an overview of the actual literature on edible insect acceptability in Europe to propose conceivable solutions for product development and new approaches for further studies. This study examines the food insecurity situation and household poverty in Tahoua region (Niger). The investigations concerned 420 households distributed in 20 villages according to a reasoned sampling proportional to the demographic weight of 8 departments of the region. Household food insecurity results from inadequate cultivable land. Thus, poverty is mostly linked to poor access to basic social services such as education with 29% of school attendees and 53% of illiterates; Health coverage with 53.09% and rudimentary habitats consisting of hutches, straw huts, half or final materials built. Water infrastructure provides 13.5% of households with drinking water. Consequently, the Niger government must respond to reduce the vulnerability of populations to food insecurity and poverty by mobilizing land reserves, supporting pastoralism and nonagricultural activities, and controlling demography. Ces dernières années, l’analyse et les pratiques de la sécurité et de l’insécurité ont fortement évolué sous l’influence de plusieurs facteurs fortement imbriqués, tels que le déclin de la souveraineté nationale, l’accroissement de l’intensité des interactions transnationales ou encore l’éclatement conflictuel sous-tendu par des dynamiques identitaires. Ces constats et les représentations qui leur sont associées ont enjoint un réexamen de la manière dont la sécurité et l’insécurité se pensent et se pratiquent. Inscrit au cœur de ce double questionnement contemporain, cet ouvrage met en question la définition et les enjeux liés aux dynamiques actuelles d’(in)sécurité tout en proposant de nouvelles perspectives.
