Hot-rolled AA1050 commercial pure aluminum was deformed by ECAP (Equal Channel Angular Pressing) at room temperature following route BC for 8 passes. Mechanical testing at room temperature on both hot-rolled aluminum and aluminum after ECAP consisted of uniaxial tension, axisymmetric compression and shear by torsion. The phenomenological Hill’s criterion identified from texture data accounts for the observed tension-compression asymmetry due to ECAP and predicts torsion yielding close to measurements. FE simulations of the compression tests are performed with a Hill model or a Minty micro-macro model and coupled with an isotropic Voce saturation hardening law. These simulations compute the inhomogeneous behavior due to barreling, the observed sample anisotropy and the force-displacement curve. Comparisons of numerical and experiments results provide a first identification of the hardening parameters and the friction coefficient during compression tests. [less ▲]

Initial adherence to host cells is the first step of the infection of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC), enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) and verotoxigenic Escherichia coli (VTEC) strains. The importance of this step in the infection resides in the fact that (1) adherence is the first contact between bacteria and intestinal cells without which the other steps cannot occur and (2) adherence is the basis of host specificity for a lot of pathogens. This review describes the initial adhesins of the EPEC, EHEC and VTEC strains. During the last few years, several new adhesins and putative colonisation factors have been described, especially in EHEC strains. Only a few adhesins (BfpA, AF/R1, AF/R2, Ral, F18 adhesins) appear to be host and pathotype specific. The others are found in more than one species and/or pathotype (EPEC, EHEC, VTEC). Initial adherence of EPEC, EHEC and VTEC strains to host cells is probably mediated by multiple mechanisms. [less ▲]

The size of small Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) makes them susceptible to gusts, hence an evaluation of their aeroelastic performance is a necessary requirement. With advances in materials, new aircraft are ever lighter and more flexible, both in the span-wise and chord-wise direction. An experiment is set up to evaluate the aeroelastic performance of a 2D chord-wise aerofoil structure under gust loading, where the wing of a small Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) is considered by coupling a Finite Element (FE) structural model with a Doublet-Lattice Method (DLM) aerodynamic model; a new semi-analytical modelling approach is also described. The flexible aerofoil structure is then optimised by means of a genetic algorithm (GA) framework for the minimum weight, subject to aeroelastic constraints of flutter, divergence and structural displacement. One approach to understanding the magnetosphere at a system level is to select a number of magnetospheric state variables and to examine statistically their inter-relationships and the temporal evolution of the magnetosphere through state-space. This talk outlines a first attempt at such a study, using the radius of the auroral oval, a proxy for the open flux content of the magnetosphere, and the Sym-H index, a measure of the intensity of the ring current, as the primary state variables. Using observations from the two-year period June 2000 to May 2002, the response of the state of the magnetosphere to differing solar wind inputs, and the evolution of the system state during geomagnetic storms is investigated. Our main finding is a characteristic evolution of magnetospheric state through the initial, main, and recovery phases of geomagnetic storms. We discuss our findings within the context of the expanding/contracting polar cap paradigm, in terms of a modification of substorm onset conditions by the magnetic perturbation associated with the ring current. Severe colitis is life-threatening complication of ulcerative colitis. Early recognition of the severity of the colitis, intensive medical therapy and prompt surgery when necessary have all contributed to improved outcome. Initial medical treatment should be instituted as soon as the diagnosis is made with an intravenous corticosteroid associated with supportive treatment. If the patient fails to response to this intensive treatment after 5-7 days, cyclosporin should be initiated. If cyclosporin is not used then colectomy should be performed immediately. Moreover, significant deterioration at any point during medical therapy is an indication for colectomy. The gravity of the patient's condition require close interaction between physician an surgeon. Juno-UVS is an imaging spectrograph with a bandpass of 70<λ<205 nm. This wavelength range includes important far-ultraviolet (FUV) emissions from the H2 bands and the H Lyman series which are produced in Jupiter’s auroras, and also the absorption signatures of aurorally-produced hydrocarbons. The Juno-UVS instrument telescope has a 4x4 cm2 input aperture and uses an off-axis parabolic primary mirror. A flat scan mirror situated near the entrance of the telescope is used to observe at up to ±30° perpendicular to the Juno spin plane. The light is focused onto the spectrograph entrance slit, which has a “dog-bone” shape, with three sections of 2.55°x0.2°, 2.0°x0.025°, and 2.55°x0.2° (as projected onto the sky). Light entering the slit is dispersed by a toroidal grating which focuses FUV light onto a curved microchannel plate (MCP) cross delay line (XDL) detector with a solar blind UV-sensitive CsI photocathode. The two mirrors and the grating are coated with MgF2 to improve FUV reflectivity. Tantalum surrounds the spectrograph assembly to shield the detector and its electronics from high-energy electrons. All other electronics are located in Juno’s spacecraft vault, including redundant low-voltage and high-voltage power supplies, command and data handling electronics, heater/actuator electronics, scan mirror electronics, and event processing electronics. The purpose of Juno-UVS is to remotely sense Jupiter’s auroral morphology and brightness to provide context for in situ measurements by Juno’s particle instruments. Here we present the first near-Jupiter results from the UVS instrument following measurements made during PJ1, Juno’s first perijove pass with its instruments powered on and taking data. [less ▲]

Uncertainty is a component of many gambling games and may play a role in incentive motivation and cue attraction. Uncertainty can increase the attractiveness for predictors of reward in the Pavlovian procedure of autoshaping, visible as enhanced sign-tracking (or approach and nibbles) by rats of a metal lever whose sudden appearance acts as a conditioned stimulus (CS+) to predict sucrose pellets as an unconditioned stimulus (UCS). Here we examined how reward uncertainty might enhance incentive salience as sign-tracking both in intensity and by broadening the range of attractive CS+s. We also examined whether initially-induced uncertainty enhancements of CS+ attraction can endure beyond uncertainty itself, and persist even when Pavlovian prediction becomes 100% certain. Our results show that uncertainty can broaden incentive salience attribution to make CS cues attractive that would otherwise not be (either because they are too distal from reward or too risky to normally attract sign-tracking). In addition, uncertainty enhancement of CS+ incentive salience, once induced by initial exposure, persisted even when Pavlovian CS-UCS correlations later rose toward 100% certainty in prediction. Persistence suggests an enduring incentive motivation enhancement potentially relevant to gambling, which in some ways resembles incentive-sensitization. Higher motivation to uncertain CS+s leads to more potent attraction to these cues when they predict the delivery of uncertain rewards. In humans, those cues might possibly include the sights and sounds associated with gambling, which contribute a major component of the play immersion experienced by problematic gamblers. [less ▲]
