Brualdi brought to Geršgorin Theory the concept that the digraph G(A) of a matrix A is important in studying whether A is singular. He proved, for example, that if, for every directed cycle of G(A), the product of the diagonal entries exceeds the product of the row sums of the moduli of the off-diagonal entries, then the matrix is nonsingular. We will show how, in polynomial time, that condition can be tested and (if satisfied) produce a diagonal matrix D, with positive diagonal entries, such that AD (where A is any nonnnegative matrix satisfying the conditions) is strictly diagonally dominant (and so, A is nonsingular). The same D works for all matrices satisfying the conditions. Varga raised the question of whether Brualdi’s conditions are sharp. Improving Varga’s results, we show, if G is scwaltcy (strongly connected with at least two cycles), and if the Brualdi conditions do not hold, how to construct (again in polynomial time) a complex matrix whose moduli satisfy the given specifications, but is singular. A clinical isolate of Pseudomonas aeruginosa recovered from the lower respiratory tract of an 81-year-old patient hospitalized in Belgium was sent to the national reference center to determine its resistance mechanism. PCR sequencing identified a new GES variant, GES-18, which differs from the carbapenem-hydrolyzing enzyme GES-5 by a single amino acid substitution (Val80Ile, in the numbering according to Ambler) and from GES-1 by two substitutions (Val80Ile and Gly170Ser). Detailed kinetic characterization showed that GES-18 and GES-5 hydrolyze imipenem and cefoxitin with similar kinetic parameters and that GES-18 was less susceptible than GES-1 to classical β-lactamase inhibitors such as clavulanate and tazobactam. The overall structure of GES-18 is similar to the solved structures of GES-1 and GES-2, the Val80Ile and Gly170Ser substitutions causing only subtle local rearrangements. Notably, the hydrolytic water molecule and the Glu166 residue were slightly displaced compared to their counterparts in GES-1. Our kinetic and crystallographic data for GES-18 highlight the pivotal role of the Gly170Ser substitution which distinguishes GES-5 and GES-18 from GES-1. [less ▲]

Reasoning, solving mathematical equations, or planning written and spoken sentences all must factor in stimuli perceptual properties. Indeed, thinking processes are inspired by and subsequently fitted to concrete objects and situations. It is therefore reasonable to expect that the mental representations evoked when people solve these seemingly abstract tasks should interact with the properties of the manipulated stimuli. Here, we investigated the mental representations evoked by conjunction and disjunction expressions in language-picture matching tasks. We hypothesised that, if these representations have been derived using key Gestalt principles, reasoners should use perceptual compatibility to gauge the goodness of fit between conjunction/disjunction descriptions (e.g., the purpleand/ orthe green) and corresponding binary visual displays. Indeed, the results of three experimental studies demonstrate that reasoners associate conjunction descriptions with perceptually-dependent stimuli and disjunction descriptions with perceptually-independent stimuli, where visual dependency status follows the key Gestalt principles of common fate, proximity, and similarity. Introduction: When processing complex information, individuals often forego reasoning rules and draw on general cognitive mechanisms instead. Accordingly, their responses may vary with stimuli perceptual properties, with mental models, or with metaphors grounding available information onto basic action patterns. We investigated how validation scores of conjunction and disjunction descriptions vary with stimuli perceptual properties. We hypothesised that high scores would obtain for conjunctions describing perceptually-dependent stimuli and for disjunctions describing perceptually-independent stimuli, where dependency status followed key Gestalt principles. Methods: In each of three studies (N = 20) participants determined whether a coordination description matched a visual display. In Experiment 1, dependent and independent stimuli were moving simultaneously, respectively alternatively, illustrating the principle of common fate. In Experiment 2, dependent and independent stimuli were placed close, respectively far from each other, illustrating the principle of proximity. In Experiment 3, dependent and independent stimuli were of similar, respectively of dissimilar shapes, illustrating the principle of similarity. Results: A comparison of e ect sizes con rmed our perceptual- dependency hypothesis. Moreover, the results showed that Gestalt grouping is strongest for stimuli varying in motion type, weaker for stimuli varying in spatial placement, and weakest for stimuli varying in shape. Conclusions: Our studies assessed the independent e ects of motion type, proximity, and similarity, thereby contributing to the current debate concerning the representations evoked by naïve reasoning (i.e., model-, metaphor-, or Gestalt-based). Christiansen & Chater (C&C) make two related and somewhat contradictory claims, namely that the ever abstract language representations built during Chunk-and-Pass processing allow for ever greater interference from extra-linguistic information, and that it is nevertheless the language system that re-codes incoming information into abstract representations. I analyse these claims and discuss evidence suggesting that Gestalt-like representations hijack Chunk-and-Pass processing. [less ▲]
