First spike latency is the long-lasting period preceding the first spike of a neuron submitted to a super-threshold stimulus. It has been suggested that this latency could code for stimulus recognition in several sensory systems. To encode information reliably, first spike latency should be sensitive to sensory inputs but robust to external perturbations. This paper studies the robustness of the first spike latency in spiking neuron models. We show the interplay between bistability, first spike latency and a type of neuronal excitability called regenerative excitability. [less ▲]

Nowadays, the detection of moulds hidden in buildings is only possible after degradation of the building materials. In the early 2000s, a new approach is suggested to detect fungal contamination of building materials. This one is based on the determination of the VOC emitted by the mouds, called Microbial-VOC (MVOC). This study was conducted to screen the emission of MVOCs by three different moulds growing on specific materials (shower mat, plasterboard, wood wool). The carbon dioxide, as indicator of biological activity, was also measured. In this paper, the development of an integrated index was considered for a new approach in the detection of hidden moulds. The index will be an algorithm with various variables specific to the moulds (for example : RH, CO2, single VOC and specific VOC pattern...). The goal is to propose an innovative and simple tool working with low cost sensors. [less ▲]

Real-time non-invasive determination of crop biomass and yield prediction are maybe among the major challenges in agriculture. But unknown future weather remains the key point of accurate yield forecast. This paper presents the results of a preliminary study that aims to supply the unknown future by daily mean climatic data. The results show that, under the Belgian weather, this approach is relevant. Furthermore, the developed methodology appears to be a powerful diagnosis tool of the remaining yield potential under ongoing weather. [less ▲]

Nowadays spaceborne missions for astronomy or Earth imaging need high resolution observation which implies the development of large aperture telescopes. This can be achieved by multi-aperture telescopes or large segmented telescopes. One of the major issues is the phasing of the sub-apertures or the segments of such telescopes. A cophasing sensor is therefore mandatory to achieve the ultimate resolution of these telescopes. In this framework, Liège Space Center (CSL) concern is the development of a compact cophasing sensor to phase new large lightweight segmented mirrors for future space telescopes. The sensor concept has its origins in new phase retrieval algorithms which have been recently developed. In this paper, we outline the concept and the experimental validation results of our piston sensor breadboard which is currently under development in our laboratory. Finally, future prospects and further developments of our experiment are presented. [less ▲]

A new methodology is developed for integrating complementary ground-based data sources to provide consistent ozone vertical distribution time series as well as tropospheric and stratospheric ozone partial columns. Primary results are presented for the Alpine station of the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Changes (NDACC). Ozone measurements from the lidar at Haute-Provence Observatory, the microwave spectrometer at Bern and the FTIR spectrometer at the Jungfrauch station are used for this purpose. First step is to evaluate the validity domain of ozone profile data considered here by assessing instrumental error and vertical resolution. Each instrument has its own vertical resolution; therefore adjustments need to be done for the creation of an homogeneous data set. Indeed, because of the higher resolution of lidar measurements, smoothing of the data is necessary for the comparison with FTIR and microwave measurements. However, smoothing the data induces a loss of scientific information. Therefore a compromise has to be established and discussed. The various intercomparisons provide an evaluation of the differences due to instrumental error and atmospheric variability. The statistical method used for combining the different measurements in order to obtain ozone vertical profile time series consistent with total ozone measurements is then discussed. [less ▲]

For many reasons, laparoscopic surgery has been performed worldwide. Due to logistical constraints its first steps occurred in Lubumbashi only in 2008. The aim of this presentation was to report authors' ten-month experience of laparoscopic surgery at Lubumbashi Don Bosco Missionary Hospital (LDBMH): problems encountered and preliminary results. The study was a transsectional descriptive work with a convenient sampling. It only took in account patients with abdominal surgical condition who consented to undergo laparoscopic surgery and when logistical constraints of the procedure were found. Independent variables were patients' demographic parameters, staff, equipments and consumable. Dependent parameters included surgical abdominal diseases, intra-operative circumstances and postoperative short term mortality and morbidity. Between 1(st)April 2009 and 28(th) February 2010, 75 patients underwent laparoscopic surgery at the LDBMH making 1.5% of all abdominal surgical activities performed at this institution. The most performed procedure was appendicectomy for acute appendicitis (64%) followed by exploratory laparoscopy for various abdominal chronic pain (9.3%), adhesiolysis for repeated periods of subacute intestinal obstruction in previously laparotomised patients (9.3%), laparoscopic cholecystectomy for post acute cholecystitis on gall stone (5.3%) and partial colectomy for symptomatic redundant sigmoid colon (2.7%). There were 4% of conversion to laparotomy. Laparoscopic surgery consumed more time than laparotomy, mostly when dealing with appendicitis. However, postoperatively, patients did quite well. There was no death in this series. Nursing care was minimal with early discharge. These results are encouraging to pursue laparoscopic surgery with DRC Government and NGO's supports. [less ▲]

In the framework of the Euro-CORDEX initiative, the Laboratory of Climatology of the University of Liège, Belgium, is currently using the regional climate model MAR (for “Modèle Atmosphérique Régional”) to simulate the past, present and future climate over Europe. Simulations are to be performed for both available resolutions over the Euro-CORDEX domain, namely 0.11 deg. (12.5 km) and 0.44 deg. (50 km). Historical and present-day runs (1979-2015) will use the ERA-Interim and the NCEP/NCAR-v1 reanalyses as boundary conditions, whereas future projections will be driven by two selected GCMs from the CMIP5 database: NorESM1-M and MIROC5. All CMIP5-GCMs were previously compared against ERA-Interim reanalysis data in terms of their ability to represent the current mean climate over Europe. The GCMs also underwent a statistical classification based on the calculation of skill-scores evaluating for instance 850 hPa temperature and 500 hPa geopotential height. Several settings and parameters were tested in order to calibrate the regional climate model MAR over the Euro-CORDEX domain. MAR is to be validated against observations from the European Climate Assessment & Dataset (ECA&D). The final aim of this study is to assess the performance of MAR in comparing its results to other RCMs used within the Euro-CORDEX initiative. [less ▲]

Water flow in the plant continuum is thought to be controlled by the leaf, xylem and the root radial conductances. Leaf conductance is widely recognized as the master control in the system as it can act as a switch in the water flow, even under high transpiration demand. The control of the stomatal aperture by the plant has been the object of numerous research projects since decades and different models have been developed to study stomatal regulation. The plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) produced in the leaves acts as an endogenous signal triggering stomatal closure, but is also thought to act as a long distance signal that is produced by roots experiencing water deficit. However, the relative contributions of leaf-supplied ABA, root-supplied ABA and xylem water potential in the regulation of water flow remains a matter of controversy. Using a novel functional structural plant model (PlaNet-Maize-ABA), we report here a first attempt to explicitly simulate ABA production, degradation, translocation in all plant organs and their effect on the transpiration flow. Background/Aim: Artenimol-R is cytotoxic in transformed cervical cells and safety in humans is yet to be established. The present study investigates the clinical benefits, safety and the tumor marker effect of orally administered Artenimol-R in patients with advanced cervix carcinoma. Patients and Methods: Ten patients were treated with Artenimol-R for 28 days. Clinical symptoms, vaginal discharge and pain were followed-up. Adverse events were recorded. Biopsy samples were analyzed by immunohistochemistry for the expression of relevant tumor markers. Results: Artenimol-R treatment induced clinical remission with a median time for the disappearance of the symptoms being 7 days. No adverse events of grade 3 or 4 occurred. The expression of p53, Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), and antigen Ki-67 as a cellular marker of proliferation, as well as the number of blood vessels stained by the CD31 antibody decreased, whereas the expression of transferrin receptor protein 1 (CD71) increased. Conclusion: The current pilot study provides evidence on the improvement of the clinical symptoms and the good tolerability of Artenimol-R in patients with advanced carcinoma of the cervix uteri. A survival trial with Artenimol- R in advanced patients is warranted. [less ▲]

Methanothermus fervidus belongs to the group of hyperthermophilic Archaea. The Archaea comprise organisms that live under environmental extremes. like high temperature, low pH value or high salt concentration. The outer surface of the pseudomurein sacculi of the cells of Methanothermus fervidus is covered by glycoprotein subunits (S-Iayer) directly exposed to the extreme environment. The elucidation of the crystal structure of this surface glycoprotein may provide important information on the survival strategies of these unusual micro-organisms. Before our investigations neither three-dimensional crystals have been obtained nor X-ray analyses were performed. Only electron microscopic and computer image enhancement techniques have been applied to obtain structural information from crystalline two-dimensional S-layer sheets. We describe here the successful crystallization of this surface glycoprotein under microgravity conditions. [less ▲]

Varroa mites cause considerable damage to Apis mellifera Linnaeus colonies in North America, Europe and Asia. To control this parasite, beekeepers in these parts of world have to use chemical acaricides. In Africa, this pest has been identified, and survey of Varroa infestation rates showed a lot of variation across honey bee sub-species. Generally, African colonies seemed to be resistant or tolerant to the presence of Varroa mite. The objective of our study is to explore the presence, prevalence and infestation rates of Varroa mite in Gabon. The presence and quantitative assessment of Varroa mites were performed in 55 wild colonies of Apis mellifera adansonii Latreille in two locations. Our results showed that: (1) 70% and 48% of the wild colonies studied were infested with Varroa destructor according to locations, (2) Varroa infestation rate was lower than 0.5 mite per 100 bees regardless location. The infestation rates obtained were still very low compared to those observed in various other regions in Africa. In perspective, it would be interesting to explore the reasons that could explain the low infestation rates which were observed. [less ▲]

In Vietnam where epidemics occur regularly in animal production, the farmers consider antibiotics as one of the solutions to fight against livestock diseases, thus the risk of abuse, even illegal use of antibiotics in livestock is very high. However, this is a recent issue and has not yet been thoroughly investigated. A cross-sectional study on the use of antibiotics in pig and poultry production as well as the farmer’s knowledge on the danger of the antibiotic use in three different animal production systems (farm household, semi-industrial and industrial) was conducted from July 2009 to March 2010 on 270 entities, in 3 representative localities of the Red River Delta (RRD). The results showed that a large volume of antibiotics was used arbitrary in all animal production systems. Animals were not only treated for acute diseases, but also for disease prevention, and for growth promotion. At least 45 antibiotics of more than 10 classes were used. Fifteen antibiotics were used in pig and poultry feed. For diseases treatment and prevention, antibiotics were used abusively and even illegally (e.g. chloramphenicol) by both farmers and veterinarians. The findings of this survey will permit developing new strategies for prudent use of antibiotics in livestock in Vietnam. These results will help not only to strengthen issues such as veterinary networks; antibiotics use guidance, residues monitoring systems and food safety, but also to improve awareness and ethics of producers and veterinary drug sellers.
