Coastal aquifers are under a continuous threat of pollution due to the danger of sea water intrusion. In many cases, this threat has become a reality, as a result of excessive pumping beyond some safe yield. Israeli coastal aquifer is a good example. In some places around the world, existing wells, especially close to the coast, have to be abandoned, and the available fresh water of the coastal aquifer decreases. Also, the area above the intruding sea water wedge is lost as a source of water by natural recharge or natural replenishment. Artificial recharge may constitute a response against seawater intrusion. Because of over exploitation of pumping wells, hydraulic depressions appeared along the coast and seawater intrusion advanced inland. The topic of the thesis merges two methodologies linked to these problems. The first one aims the evaluation of different artificial recharge scenarii for controlling sea water intrusion in the Israeli coastal aquifer. Thus, two sites have been selected to apply the first methodology, namely Tel Aviv/Yafo city and Ashqelon town. Secondly, it concerns a new method to assess the vulnerability of pumping/injection wells facing with sea water intrusion and finally for ranking the different mentioned artificial recharge scenarii. The first of both of them is applied with the use of VASP and FEAS software including the existing model of the Israeli coastal aquifer and the second includes the DPSIR concept. VASP is a piece of software for the generation and post-processing of models in addition to the analysis and visualization of environmental data. FEAS is a piece of software that is based on the finite elements techniques, developed for simulating sea water intrusion in two- and three-dimensional coastal aquifers, and upconing problems. The second approach has been developed in prospect to be applied later once the necessary tools would be available. [less ▲]

Starting from the observation that lacks and drawbacks of existing vulnerability methods are strongly related to the fuzzy and ambiguous definitions on which these concepts rely, a more physical point of view of the concept of vulnerability is pro-posed. An applied definition is derived from what actually underlines the concept of groundwater pollution. For intrinsic vulner-ability, three factors describing a pollution by a conservative contaminant are defined : contaminant transfer time, contamination duration and level of concentration reached by the contaminant. These factors are schematically put into a three-dimensional diagram, called the vulnerability cube, which can be used to assess or validate the vulnerability of any point within a given catchment. [less ▲]

The intensified cultivation of the rice crop constitutes an important challenge for Gabon in its strategy for food security of the populations. For this purpose, six NERICA rice varieties were selected by farmers from the PVS (Participatory Varietal Selection) trials that were conducted MASUKU in High-Ogooué sine 2009. The agromorphological characteristics like tillering and plant height and yield components (number of panicles/m2, number of grains/panicle, 1000 grain weight, sterility rate) were tested during the vegetative phase. The results were exciting. The six new varieties revealed the following good characteristics: - a good aptitude for high tillering (more than 350 tillers per m2 ); - a good height (more than 120 cm per plant); - a high number of panicles per m2(more than 220 panicles per m2); - the good weight of 1000 grains (more than 25 g). In general, the yield per hectare was very good varying between 4200 kg/ha for NERICA 11 and 7150 kg/ha for the NERICA 14. Consequently, the six newNERICA rice varieties are well adapted to the agroecological conditions of MASUKU and can be diffused in the rice plains of the locality. [less ▲]

The essential role of the thymus is to install an extremely diverse repertoire of T lymphocytes that are self-tolerant and competent against non-self, as well as to generate self-antigen specific regulatory T cells (Treg) able to inactivate in periphery self-reactive T cells having escaped the thymic censorship. Although indirect, techniques of medical imaging and phenotyping of peripheral T cells may help in the investigation of thymic function. Nowadays however, thymopoiesis is better evaluated through quantification by PCR of T-cell receptor excision circles (TREC) generated by intrathymic random recombination of the gene segments coding for the variable parts of the T-cell receptor for antigen (TCR). The TREC methodology is very valuable in the circumstances not associated with intense proliferation or apoptosis of peripheral T lymphocytes. [less ▲]

[less ▲]
