La Science a fait des progrès ces 20 dernières années, on comprend mieux désormais où la nicotine agit dans le cerveau et ce qu’elle induit comme modification dans les circuits cérébraux. Cependant, la cause exacte de son caractère terriblement addictif n’est pas encore complètement élucidée. On sait que les effets néfastes du tabac sont imputables à la multitude d’ingrédients (plus de 5000 composés chimiques) dont certains sont très toxiques. Le tabac est responsable d’une perte de qualité de vie physique, mentale et psychosociale à court et moyen terme. Il tue par cancers, maladies cardio-vasculaires et pulmonaires. Il détériore le fonctionnement cérébral et cognitif par une atteinte des vaisseaux, provoque des troubles de l’érection, etc. Si la plupart des fumeurs le savent plus ou moins, ils trouveront dans cet ouvrage des explications claires et objectives, fondées uniquement sur des résultats de nombreuses recherches scientifiques à travers le monde, qui devraient les convaincre ou renforcer leur motivation à arrêter. Arrêter, oui mais comment ? Toutes les méthodes connues sont analysées : médicaments, cigarette électronique, patchs, sprays, gommes, produits HNB (« Heat not burn », a priori moins générateurs de dérivés cancérigènes), acupuncture, hypnose, sport, thérapie, accompagnement… La nicotine est la drogue la plus addictive qui soit. Un accompagnement multiplie par 2 ou 3 les chances de succès en entretenant la motivation. Le sevrage est difficile, c’est vrai, mais les efforts sont très bien récompensés en cas de succès. Si vous pensez qu’arrêter de fumer est mission impossible, cet ouvrage est l’outil idéal pour vous prouver le contraire ! [less ▲]

This paper presents an ultra low-power integrated interface for capacitive and resistive MEMS and sensors, intended for use in biomedical applications. The interface encodes the sensed data in the time between transmitted UWB pulses: this reduces the number of transmitted bits and benefits the power consumption. The interface was designed and fabricated in the UMC 0.18μm CMOS process: the power consumption of the system was measured to be 1.04μW at a sample rate of 37Hz. © 2015 IEEE. [less ▲]

The average cell size of marine phytoplankton is critical for the flow of energy and nutrients from the base of the food web to higher trophic levels. Thus, the evolutionary succession of primary producers through Earth’s history is important for our understanding of the radiation of modern protists ∼800 million years ago and the emergence of eumetazoan animals ∼200 million years later. Currently, it is difficult to establish connections between primary production and the proliferation of large and complex organisms because the mid-Proterozoic (∼1,800–800 million years ago) rock record is nearly devoid of recognizable phytoplankton fossils. We report the discovery of intact porphyrins, the molecular fossils of chlorophylls, from 1,100-million-year-old marine black shales of the Taoudeni Basin (Mauritania), 600 million years older than previous findings. The porphyrin nitrogen isotopes (δ15Npor = 5.6–10.2‰) are heavier than in younger sedimentary sequences, and the isotopic offset between sedimentary bulk nitrogen and porphyrins (εpor = −5.1 to −0.5‰) points to cyanobacteria as dominant primary producers. Based on fossil carotenoids, anoxygenic green (Chlorobiacea) and purple sulfur bacteria (Chromatiaceae) also contributed to photosynthate. The low εpor values, in combination with a lack of diagnostic eukaryotic steranes in the time interval of 1,600–1,000 million years ago, demonstrate that algae played an insignificant role in mid-Proterozoic oceans. The paucity of algae and the small cell size of bacterial phytoplankton may have curtailed the flow of energy to higher trophic levels, potentially contributing to a diminished evolutionary pace toward complex eukaryotic ecosystems and large and active organisms. The crystal structure of the class-B beta-lactamase, BlaB, from the pathogenic bacterium, Chryseobacterium meningosepticum, in complex with the inhibitor, D-captopril, has been solved at 1.5-Angstrom resolution. The enzyme has the typical alphabeta/betaalpha metallo-beta-lactamase fold and the characteristic two metal binding sites of members of the subclass B1, in which two Zn2+ ions were identified. D-Captopril, a diastereoisomer of the commercial drug, captopril, acts as an inhibitor by displacing the catalytic hydroxyl ion required for antibiotic hydrolysis and intercalating its sulfhydryl group between the two Zn2+ ions. Interestingly, D-captopril is located on one side of the active site cleft. The x-ray structure of the complex of the closely related enzyme, IMP-1, with a mercaptocarboxylate inhibitor, which also contains a sulfhydryl group bound to the two Zn2+ ions, shows the ligand to be located on the opposite side of the active site cleft. A molecule generated by fusion of these two inhibitors would cover the entire cleft, suggesting an interesting approach to the design of highly specific inhibitors. [less ▲]
