We analyze the evolution of several financial indices before the crash of October 1987. The amplitude of the crash varies from one index to another. However, assuming that the crash is similar to a phase transition and particularly to a specific heat jump, we find that the crash amplitude can be well estimated by assuming a simple background which differs from market to market. We show that the divergence near the crash event is logarithmic and extends between 2 weeks and 4 years before the october 1987 crash on both S&P500 and Dow Jones indices. The behavior is like that found for the d = 2 Ising model specific heat. The latter result is in contrast to previous works which have considered a power law behavior of the index near the crash. Finally, we confirm the presence of log-periodic oscillations and discuss briefly their origin. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Brain-type creatine kinase (CK) isoenzyme (CK-BB) was found in the ventricular cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and the serum in a series of 35 patients within 13 hours following severe head injury. There was a good correlation between total CK and CK-BB activities in CSF only. The values found in the CSF appear to be a quantitative index of brain dysfunction at admission, and did not correlate with intracranial pressure activity. High levels of CK-BB in the CSF correlated with a poor outcome, and thus offer a reliable criterion for the assessment of the severity of head injury. [less ▲]

Jean-Paul Broonen, IAEVG 2015, Tsukuba (Japan) Creating a research agenda of volition in career counseling Abstract The purpose of this paper is to present volition construct as the basis for a research agenda in career counseling. In liquid societies of late modernity where pursuit of career in unstable and rapidly changing occupational structures is so difficult, motivation fueling vocational constructing behaviors appears to be a prerequisite of success. However, motivational processes are only half of the story. In order to overcome internal or external obstacles to a confident and peaceful reflection on their career development, individuals need more than ever to bring into play volition, that is, the capacity to regulate in difficult contexts psychological functions such as cognition, motivation, and emotion in order to determine which motivational tendencies related to career choice processes are implemented, when, where, and how. Surprisingly volition is until now largely or completely unexplored in the vocational counseling domain. In this contribution, I address some basic aspects of the overarching volition construct originating in experimental and social psychology, and recently also considered by cognitive neurosciences. Taking the psychology of action control as a lens of analysis, I outline the potential resources for career counseling of (1) action versus state orientation affect-regulatory competences which are a main component of Personality Systems Interactions theory (Kuhl, 2000) that proposed a comprehensive functional analysis of hierarchic regulatory systems mediating human motivation and personality ; (2) implementation intentions (Gollwitzer, 1999), that is, a kind of specific plans which may be activated in the post-decisional pre-actional phase of the Model of Action Phases ; (3) an attempt to disentangle volitional control from career control dimension included in the construct of career adaptability (Savickas, 2012; Johnson et al., 2013). It is argued that some leading career theories of career counseling might benefit from incorporating volitional constructs into their framework. I propose a specific agenda to address how these constructs could be explored in the vocational counseling domain in order to enrich concrete practices for helping clients, faced to an unsecured world, volitionally construct the future of their career. This paper aims to present the theoretical frame of the Ph.D. dissertation: Rhetoric of Video Game Détournement: The Pokémon Case. The topic of this dissertation is the “détournement” of video games by players, that is to say: the creative practices that use video games as materials or as matrices to produce derivative works. Precisely, this notion covers a diversified range of productions whose common feature is to be created from video games: mods (modifications of the game’s code by users in order to create a renewed game), fanfictions (narrative texts written by fans and based on pre-existing fictional universes), or machinimas, speedruns and let’s plays (which are various types of videos recorded inside video games). In this presentation, I will develop the notion of “détournement” and show that its interconnection with the concept of “play” raises some theoretical issues: what part of the game is transformed in these productions? From which degree of variation can play be considered as “transformative”? From which norm of the playing activity could we identify a “deviant” form of play? These are the questions I will try to answer. [less ▲]
