This video aims to get an insight on the mechanisms involved in retention of pesticides on plants. Using high magnification lenses, high speed camera and led back-light, the elaboration of retention on plant leaves is better understood. The behavior of different drops diameters and speed is observed and linked to the physics behind. The video is dedicated to plant protection products users and should give them a clear understanding of the relevant parameters to be mastered to avoid losses and reduce polution. [less ▲]

Aims: We aim to use microlensing taking place in the lensed quasar Q2237+0305 to study the structure of the broad line region and measure the size of the region emitting the CIV and CIII] lines. Methods: Based on 39 spectrophotometric monitoring data points obtained between Oct. 2004 and Dec. 2007, we derive lightcurves for the CIV and CIII] emission lines. We use three different techniques to analyse the microlensing signal. Different components of the lines (narrow, broad and very broad) are identified and studied. We build a library of simulated microlensing lightcurves which reproduce the signal observed in the continuum and in the lines provided only the source size is changed. A Bayesian analysis scheme is then developed to derive the size of the various components of the BLR. Results: 1. The half-light radius of the region emitting the CIV line is found to be R_CIV ~ 66^{+110}_{-46} lt-days = 0.06^{+0.09}_{-0.04} pc = 1.7^{+2.8}_{-1.1} 10^17 cm (at 68.3% CI). Similar values are obtained for CIII]. Relative sizes of the V-band continuum and of the carbon line emitting regions are also derived with median values of R(line)/R(cont) in the range [4,29], depending of the FWHM of the line component. 2. The size of the CIV emitting region agrees with the Radius-Luminosity relationship derived from reverberation mapping. Using the virial theorem we derive the mass of the black hole in Q2237+0305 to be M_BH ~ 10^{8.3+/-0.3} M_sun. 3. We find that the CIV and CIII] lines are produced in at least 2 spatially distinct regions, the most compact one giving rise to the broadest component of the line. The broad and narrow line profiles are slightly different for CIV and CIII]. 4. Our analysis suggests a different structure of the CIV and FeII+III emitting regions, with the latter being produced in the inner part of the BLR or in a less extended emitting region than CIV. The term « Pet bird » designates birds housed and breeded for an exclusively ornamental use. This category includes mainly Passeriformes (canaries, finches…) and Psittaciformes (parrots, parakeets…), and is a not-so-well known vet’s clientship fraction. Many families indeed own their « kitchen canary », which represent a lucrative business for pet shops or local breeders (e.a. via birds fairs and markets). Besides, some birds are bred for their very high value; for example, in the case of canaries, male and female reproductors with recognized genetic potential are presented in international contests for their posture (the Bossu Belge : fig 1a), their colour (red mosaic: fig 1b) and for their song (Harzer: fig 1c) and sold for rising prices. Finally, exotic birds like parrots (ara, cockatoo…), legally or illegaly traded from Asia, are however very popular pets and profusely represented in zoos and parks. Notwithstanding these economic facts, these animals are potential carriers and/or transmitters of zoonotic diseases. Some of them could have an important impact on human health, like ornithosis, salmonellosis or even H5N1 high pathogenic avian influenza. This review, although non exhausive, has as aim to enlighten, by the description of several cases of birds-humans transmission the risks encountered by birds owners, including children, and on another point of view to assess the potential economic consequences. The dominant species of the crustacean plankton in Lake Kivu are the cyclopoid copepods Thermocyclops consimilis and Mesocyclops aequatorialis and the cladoceran Diaphanosoma excisum. Mean crustacean biomass over the period 2003–2004 was 0.99 g C m−2. The seasonal dynamics closely followed variations of chlorophyll a concentration and responded well to the dry season phytoplankton peak. The mean annual crustacean production rate was 23 g C m−2 year−1. The mean trophic transfer efficiency between phytoplankton and herbivorous zooplankton was equal to 6.8 %, indicating a coupling between both trophic levels similar to that in other East African Great lakes. These observations suggest a predominant bottom-up control of plankton dynamics and biomass in Lake Kivu. Whereas the present biomass of crustacean plankton in Lake Kivu is comparable to that of other African Rift lakes, the zooplankton biomass before Limnothrissa introduction was 2.6 g C m−2, based on estimation from available historical data. So, if the sardine introduction in the middle of the last century led to a threefold decrease of zooplankton biomass, it did not affect zooplankton production to a level which would lead to the collapse of the food web and of the fishery. In the current debate about the zoo's educational role it s usually assumed that the emotional aspect of the zoo experience impairs the scienfic knowledge that people can gain from their visit. First we briefly describe four human-animal interactionnal patterns that can be observed in a zoo, and we recognise that indeed, in that context, the emotion experienced by the public impairs its knowledge of the animals. then we persent the Hediger's distinctin between an object and a subject animal and we hypothesise that the visitor's emotions impari animal knowledge only when the exhibited animals are object-animals. Those are incomplete animals : they are not complete beings in relation to their evolutionary environment. It is our view that when the exhibited animals are more complete organisms, the emotions can be a tool for a better knowledge of the animals. [less ▲]

Objective: The aim of the study was to assess the weight and reproductive performances of Girolando cattle at Kpinnou Breeding Farm (KBF) in the south western of Benin Republic. Materials and methods: The weight performance and body measurements were taken on a total of 150 Girolando cattle. The study of the reproductive traits was based on the recorded demographic indicators between 2012-2013 of 67 cows. Results: From calving to the age of 3 months, the monthly average weight of calves did not vary with the season of calving (P>0.05). Between the 4th and 9th month, the weight varied with the birth seasons and the sex of the calf. Beyond 9th month, the calf’s average weight was the same regardless the calving season. At the age of 24 months, the highest weight (393.33 kg) was obtained during the long rainy season. The highest average weight was 398.22 Kg for males against 364.25 Kg for females at 24 months. The fertility rates ranged from 91.18% to 100% and the fecundity rate ranged from 85.29% to 103% during the study period. The apparent fertility rate was 91.18%. As for the calving and abortion rates, they were 93.55% and 6.45%, respectively. The mortality rate before weaning was 6.90% while the weaning viability was 93.10%. Calving occurred from January to June and from August to December. Conclusion: In overall, the Girolando performances are satisfactory and show a good adaptation at KBF. [less ▲]
