Despite increasing use of ANPR camera technology, especially in criminal investigations, literature and the experience of the police with whom we worked, seem to show that there is no systematic method to locate as adequately as possible these expensive facilities. Given a set of four categories of robberies over one year localized within the province of Liège (Belgium), we propose a methodology based on a multi-criteria analysis, making use of density offenses, road density and the distance between the sites of the cameras. Multi-criteria approach can adjust the factor weightings for different types of offenses. In addition, the methodology is iterative, insofar cameras sites are located in successive phases. One result validation criteria is provided in the form of a territorial coverage rate considering the number of selected camera sites and the travel time from each of these sites. Moreover, the consequences for the geographical profiling of attempts to avoid the installed sites are quickly evoked. [less ▲]

This paper addresses a new approach to formalize the spatiotemporal relationships between geographical objects that do not exist or that are not present at the time of the analysis. We propose first an analysis of the spatiotemporal states of existence and presence for a geographical object. Then, we combine the spatiotemporal states to define a comprehensive set of life and motion configuration. The proposed model serves as formal basis to perform spatiotemporal queries by retrieving selected patterns in the life and motion configurations. The research is applied to the organization of a scientific conference, in doing so we are able to define the relationships that exist between an event located in space and time and mobiles objects evolving within the space, i.e. the conference participants. This article aims at assessing the bias introduced by the use of the Euclidean distance in the context of geographic profiling analyzes. It proceeds by a comparison of road and Euclidean distances of about 1 000 pairs of origin-destination (crime sites – criminal’s anchor point) from the database of the Belgian Federal Police. Comparisons are differentiated by the density of road network (rural and urban areas) and the statistical parameters of the resulting distributions are exploited in the application of the most common geographic profiling model called the distance decay model. Nowadays a real effort is devoted to the formalization of raster – image – geographic information. From conceptual design to relational modelling, norms and standards are proposed by agencies as well as commercial companies, for implementing raster data in spatial databases and GIS. At the same time, query languages are enhanced in order to promote the use of raster data in relational spatial algebra. Besides, normalized schemes make raster interoperability possible between distributed GIS, and encourage the emergence of Web services dedicated to raster processing. Hence, it can be expected that raster geographic data will play a major role in the coming spatial data infrastructures. [less ▲]
