Lipids, and their constitutive fatty acids, are key nutrients for fish health as they provide energy, maintain cell structure, are precursors of signalling molecules and act as nuclear receptor ligands. These specific roles may be of crucial importance in a context of exposure to pollutants. We recently showed that the fatty acid profile of rainbow trout liver cell phospholipids modulates sensitivity to an acute methylmercury challenge. In order to investigate mechanisms of effects, we herein tested whether specific polyunsaturated fatty acids may protect cells from methylmercury through decreasing intracellular mercury accumulation and/or enhancing cellular defences (e.g. via modulation of gene expression patterns). We also investigated the inverse relationship and assessed the impact of methylmercury on cellular fatty acid metabolism. To do so, the fatty acid composition of rainbow trout liver cell phospholipids was first modified by incubating them in a medium enriched in a specific polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) from either the n-3 family (alpha-linolenic acid, ALA; eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA) or the n-6 family (linoleic acid, LA; arachidonic acid, AA). Cells were then exposed to methylmercury (0.15 or 0.50 μM) for 24 h and sampled thereafter for assessing phospholipid fatty acid profile, intracellular total mercury burden, and expression pattern of genes involved in fatty acid metabolism, synthesis of polyunsaturated fatty acid-derived signalling molecules and stress response. We observed that cells incorporated the given polyunsaturated fatty acid and some biotransformation products in their phospholipids. MeHg had few impacts on this cellular phospholipid composition. None of the PUFA enrichments affected the cellular mercury burden, suggesting that the previously observed cytoprotection conferred by ALA and EPA was not linked to a global decrease in cellular accumulation of mercury. Fatty acid enrichments and methylmercury exposure both modulated gene expression patterns. Genes involved in the synthesis of polyunsaturated fatty acid-derived signalling molecules, in stress response and the orphan cytochrome P450 20A1 were identified as possible sites of interaction between fatty acids and methylmercury in rainbow trout liver cells. Since the end of the Uruguay Round in the mid-1990s, the world trade system notes a spread of international trade agreements (ITAs) which has configured the world map of trading relationships resembling a “Spaghetti bowl”. This bewildering range of geographical configurations of ITAs at a regional and extra-regional level containing a tangle of rules of origin (RO) prompts worries about an inefficiency so-called the “Spaghetti bowl” Phenomenon (SBP). This chapter re-examines the relationship between ITAs and this inefficient situation. It discusses the evidence of SBP by surveying relevant empirical studies and ITAs and analyzing data. At first, it presents the contain of the political economy of trade agreement by reviewing the reasons of a trade agreement formation, and giving some justifications of the proliferation of ITAs. Secondly, it makes an analysis of the data on ITAs and trade, relating it to the existing studies, in order to highlight the evidence on the trade diversion of ITAs. As conclusion, the multiplication of ITAs might result in trade diversion effects because of higher transaction costs due to a mass of overlapping rules. Even if the percentage of world trade covered by ITAs has expanded sharply, the multiplication of ITAs nevertheless diverts trade including often some bilateral ITA relations no impact on trade. However, the relative size of trade creation and trade diversion depends on trade elasticities between the trading partners. In the question of the tangle of RO, recent plurilateral agreements (intra and extra regions) involving many countries, such as CETA, TPP, etc., have the potential to reduce the SBP of ITAs especially if they supersede existing bilateral agreements and develop common rules (such as for RO) to be applied by all the parties to the agreement. This chapter is intended as a tool for policymakers considering new regional trade agreements, and as a reference paper for academics interesting in SBP. [less ▲]

Bernardo Dovizi, one of the most famous secretaries of the early Italian Reinassance, is best known for his literary works and for being the patron of Raffaello rather than for his endeavors in diplomacy. By deciding to follow the interests of Giovanni de’ Medici, Dovizi made some poor political decisions in his career but, in spite of this, he cunningly managed to get his patron become the Pope. The "Calandra" is a work that depicts well the author’s ideas, in between parody and classicism. From his works, Epistolario and Ricordi, it appears that the main strength of Dovizi is his irony, through which he manages to become almost an accomplice with his patron. Alongside with the iconological choice of the frescoes of his Stufetta and Loggia in the Vatican, he assumes the posture of the secretary-jester, as it was portrayed by Baldassarre Castiglione in "The Book of the Courtier": the satyr that washes into the room, used as bathroom, corresponds to the most famous pose of the patron who insists on these burlesque and mocking characteristics, although relating to Ovid and Plato. Bibbiena seems to be aware of how much the man that exceeds in praise himself appears unbearable, therefore, in his relations with members of the ruling class, he often assumes a playful attitude. In the Rome of Leo X, because of the Socratic 'serio ludere', such attitude was accepted and admired. The best instruments of Bibbiena are the pleasantness and a careful selection of humanistic ideals. Such ideals were those that suited better the environment in which he, the courtier, had to operate, and were used in his works. [less ▲]
