The clinical diagnosis of cutaneous melanoma always calls for histological confirmation. In addition to the recognition of the classic aspects of the neoplasm, immunohistochemistry is determinant, in particular in the assessment of the size of the replicative compartment. Generally, the proliferation rate is indicative of the neoplastic progression and is related to the clinical growth rate of the neoplasm. It allows to distinguish high risk melanomas showing a high growth rate from those of lower malignancy associated with a restricted growth rate. In melanoma, the recruitment and progression of neoplastic cells in the cell cycle of proliferation have lost some of their controls that are normally processed by a series of key regulatory molecules. In addition, the apoptotic pathway counteracting any hyperproliferative activity is released of the dependency of specific regulated molecular mechanisms. This review summarizes the current knowledge on key molecular components involved in the deregulation of the growth fraction, cell proliferation and apoptosis in melanocytic neoplasms. The implication of cyclins and of the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways are scrutinized. The involvement of neoplastic stem cells in the metastatic process is also discussed. [less ▲]

Enteric infections caused by Salmonella remain a major public health burden worldwide. Poultry, particularly chickens, are known to be the main reservoir for this zoonotic pathogen. Therefore, the prevention and monitoring of Salmonella infection during the live phase may greatly reduce the contamination of poultry meat during slaughter and processing. With the ban on sub-therapeutic antibiotic usage in Europe and the increasingly strictness of the European legislation on food hygiene, passive immunization by oral administration of pathogen-specific hen egg yolk antibody (IgY) may be a useful and attractive alternative. This review offers summarized information about IgY production and the use of these antibodies for passive immunization, particularly in poultry [less ▲]

Establishing the osteoarticular status of the horse is often performed by means of radiological screening of the animals. Widespread blood sampling could reveal to be an interesting alternative to this procedure which is time consuming and sometimes technically difficult. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the radiological status of the horses and the levels of biochemical markers of cartilage degradation and synovial inflammation. A specific radiological scoring and classification system was therefore developed and applied on 63 stallions presented for studbook admission. Additionally, groups of horses were established according to the occurrence of osteochondrosis, degenerative joint disease and distal interphalangeal joint effusion. Insulin growth factor-I, myeloperoxidases, Coll2-1 and Coll2-1NO(2) were used as blood markers. The combination of the blood parameters did not seem to correlate with the used scoring system. Coll2-1NO(2) levels however tended to increase with poorer radiological class and this could therefore potentially be a useful predictor of the osteoarticular status in the horse. Coll2-1 levels were significantly higher in the degenerative joint disease group. A high percentage of horses with distal interphalangeal joint effusion was present in this study and was associated with decreased IGF-I and increased Coll2-1 levels. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Ferrets are carnivorous animals very close to the polecats. They are used in many <br />fields and are currently used widespread as pets. Their anatomy and physiology allow classifying them as carnivorous predators. Their diet consists of small prey. Studies on the nutritional requirements are very scarce and based mostly on comparisons with the cat or mink. The longevity factor is consistently absent from these studies although many diseases have a nutritional origin. Their digestive tract is not much differentiated and the transit is very quick, the digestion is inefficient. Their energy requirements are extremely high, much more than the cat. Ferrets require a high intake of animal protein —not from plant— of high nutritional quality and energyprotein ratio adjusted. Lipids are the main source of energy in the diet, and must be present in significant amounts. The minimum requirements are dependent on fatty acid composition, fat should be of animal origin and mostly of good quality. The ferret eating only animal products, there is no demonstrated requirements of carbohydrates. In addition carbohydrates are involved in different diseases. Micronutrient needs have been little studied and are often based on observation of deficiencies. Domestic ferrets are prone to diseases of nutritional origin; this leads many experts to rethink the diet of this animal. [less ▲]

We present the second harmonic generation - circular dichroism response from C-shaped gold nanostructures for P-polarized incoming light. By eliminating the contributions of anisotropy to the signal, an absolute measure of the second harmonic generation - circular dichroism is presented. The system of planar nanostructures is an excellent model for studying the correlation between optical properties and chiral morphology at the nanoscale. Samples with both enantiomorphs of the chiral pattern were prepared and, demonstrating the unambiguous presence of chirality, the second harmonic generation - circular dichroism response from two such samples was fitted simultaneously with a single set of fitting parameters.
