INTRODUCTION: The semicircular lipoatrophy of the thighs is a disorder whose incidence remained rare for years. Only recently, an "epidemic" situation emerged, affecting hundreds of subjects who shared a status of administrative employee. OBSERVATION: The older etiopathogenic hypotheses give way to a newer one implying the electromagnetic fields generated by computers and their wirings. The resulting modifications in the intrinsic bioelectrical properties of the skin could influence the biology of macrophages exhibiting lipophagic activity in the hypodermis. The electroactivation of these cells could lead to TNF-alpha release. DISCUSSION: The semicircular lipoatrophy of the thighs is a problem that may affect an employee out of two. Rather than hoping an efficaceous drug therapy, prevention must be advocated by adapting the work conditions related to the use of computerized devices. [less ▲]

The faunaʼs overexploitation in the Congo basin in general and within logging concessions in particular case still appears as a crucial problematic. Commercial poaching threats not only mammal biodiversity but also long-term food safety of local populations. Strangely, this situation is generating a new and collective answer from stakeholders having opposite interests. Administrative authorities, international NGOs of conservation, logging companies have found in the context of wood certifi cation a common deal to begin an anti-poaching action on large landscapes. This study analyses interests of each stakeholder and discusses the place given to populations in this social blending around wildlife. [less ▲]

In Wallonia, railways constitute valuable habitats for reptile conservation. All autochthonous species have colonized these man-made habitats, but their presence and abundance largely vary among the natural regions and the kinds of railways. Reptiles are more frequent along railways with remaining rails than along dismounted unused ways, which represents one half of the network. Although representing only a small part of the network, the unused railways not dismounted are particularly rich in reptiles. This is also the case of some active lines in sunny areas of large valleys and in some large switchyards. Anguis fragilis is the most widespread species on the Walloon railways, but P o d a rcis muralisis the most abundant. In Wallonia, railways seemed to have contributed to the local, more rarely regional, dispersion of at least five species of reptiles: Anguis fragilis, Lacerta agilis, Podarcis muralis, Zootoca viviparaa and Coronella austriaca. Some of these species – specifically Podarcis muralis– have most probably colonized new regions through unexpected transportation by merchandise cars. Finally, reptile populations inhabiting the Walloon railways face several threads. [less ▲]

Histone-deacetylase inhibitors (HDCACi) represent a new class of antitumor agents currently in clinical development. They target a family of enzymes which catalyse histone acetylation modifications, in particular for histones H2A, H2B, H3 and H4. These proteins stabilize the nucleosome core, fundamental unity of chromatin which represents the first level of DNA nuclear compaction. The balance of histone acetylation is maintained by histone-acetyltransferases (HAT) and histone-deacetylases (HDAC) which play an important role in gene transcription. Alterations of HDACs were identified in tumor cells and contribute to the massive perturbations of gene expression in numerous tumors. HDAC inhibition leads to differentiation, cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in tumor cells. HDACi efficiently prevent tumor growth in a variety of in vivo preclinical models. Several structurally distinct classes of HDACi have entered in clinical trials and a significant antitumor activity was reported in several cases. However, a better understanding of the biological effects of this class of enzymes is mandatory for the successful development of these new antitumoral agents. In this review, are exposed the main drug candidates in clinical development. In the near future, it will be interesting to define direct relationships between specific inhibition of one or several HDAC and the subsequent HDAC-dependent antitumor effects to define a new generation of specific histone-deacetylase inhibitors. In the framework of a Euratom research program devoted to Nuclear Waste deposition security assessment, a numerical simulation of the excavation of a gallery in the Boom Clay layer at Mol (Belgium) has been performed In order to model the progressive excavation and lining installation process, a special sequence of desactivation/activation of sets of elements was elaborated. In particular, this numerical strategy allowed to take into account the fact that, due to the deformation of the massif as the excavation progresses, the material to be excavated once the front has reached a given position into the rock mass cannot be defined a priori, but is resulting of the modelling of the previous phases up to the present one. The size dependence of the ferroelectric properties of BaTiO3 nanowires is studied from first principles. We show that the ferroelectric distortion along the wire axis disappears below a critical diameter of about 1.2 nm. This disappearance is related to a global contraction of the unit cell resulting from low atomic coordinations at the wire surface. It is shown that a ferroelectric distortion can be recovered under appropriate tensile strain conditions. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics. [less ▲]
