Due to new urbanization patterns, where cities’ edges are becoming increasingly difficult to delimit, a better understanding of urban-rural gradients has become a key issue for urban planning. These interstitial territories are characterized for being highly heterogeneous, with hybrid and complex dynamics and -due to their landscape ambiguity and rapid transformation-frequently lack of clear regulations. Through calculation and analysis of landscape metrics in high resolution satellite images, this study proposes a novel and accurate method to identify urbanization patterns. It was applied to the urban-rural gradient of the Metropolitan District of Quito (MDQ), an Andean city. After analyzing five land use/land covers in six transects, results suggest that the MDQ presents patterns of urban diffusion and coalescence. The diffusion starts at the urban core and expand to rural parishes where some emerging traditional settlements merge, constituting a complex pattern of urbanization. Also, significant levels of fragmentation were identified for the vegetation cover in periurban areas, threatening the territory environmental sustainability. Finally, a multivariate cluster analysis was developed, evidencing five main tendencies of urbanization patterns. This knowledge can be particularly useful for urban planning in terms of reducing randomness in urban development processes. This paper proposes and tests an analytical approach which could be applied to other Latin-American cities, where urban expansion patterns remain unknown. [less ▲]

Written around the last years of the fourth century AD, the Ars Grammatica of Diomedes was intended to Greek-speaking people who wanted to learn Latin. Therefore, like Dositheus and Charisius, the composition of this grammar has to be placed in a bilingual context, more specifically in the region of Constantinople, the late capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, where the text might have been published. I would like to explore the traces of bilingualism we can detect in this text, especially the use of Greek words, with a particular attention paid to the cases of intrasentential code-switching, in order to illustrate the dynamics of the coexistence of Greek and Latin in an ancient grammatical work. [less ▲]

This paper deals with adnominal possession in Ancient Egyptian, focusing on constructions involving a pronominal possessor. In early Egyptian, a single construction is attested: substantive (possessee) + bound person marker (possessor). From the 6th Dynasty onwards, a new construction, which is built from a demonstrative determiner, appears: pAy + bound person marker (possessor) + substantive (possessee). In order to describe the gradual encroachment of the innovative possessive determiner pAy-f on the older construction with the possessive bound person marker, this study proposes a discourse-oriented analysis, using the notion of ‘subjective deixis.’ [less ▲]

The paper aims to produce the first-ever approach of the Goethean Morphology (GM) that reads it as the forerunner of contemporary techniques of pattern recognition, generation and exploration via natural computing and computer graphics, based on the analysis of the specific visualization techniques that ground Goethe’s morphological method. I propose to read GM as an original practice of reduction, departing from the phenomenological realm to intuit nature’s self-generating processes. In this context, the main remit of reduction is not to simplify complexity, as is usually the case in modern natural sciences, but rather to let visually emerge the autonomous processes that superintend the generation of complexity itself. In this sense, I understand Goethe’s main gesture as an attempt to comprehend the logic of nature from within, instead of merely trying to represent or mimic it. My project intend to explore the visual devices that ground the construction of Goethe’s Urtype, the key-feature to its morphological method. I understand the Urtype as a matrix capable of generating the structures of actual and virtual entities [less ▲]
