This case concerns the 2020-2024 strategic plan for sustainability of the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA). The RBFA has been very successful on the football pitch, as the Belgian national team - the Red Devils - has ranked first in the world since September 2018. The case describes the rich history of sustainability activities at the RBFA since 1986, the materiality matrix that resulted from a stakeholder consultation, and their efforts to align their strategy with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In September 2020, on their 125th anniversary, the RBFA would communicate about their new strategic plan for sustainability, which included the ambition to also become a leading football association off the pitch. They developed a strategic framework that mapped specific UN SDGs to a combination of four sustainability pillars and three levels of impact. Would this structured approach help them to implement sustainability projects effectively? Was aligning with the UN SDGs going to help them to develop a shared language with partners? Could the 'Golden Generation' of football players become true sustainability champions? How could the RBFA help drive the world towards a sustainable future for everyone? [less ▲]

This paper provides decision makers in digital banking with a framework for developing their open banking strategies. Based on interviews with experts from leading banks and insurers, FinTech and big tech, a large consultancy and the regulator, we have identified five strategic dimensions of open banking — product innovation, customer experience integration, ecosystem competition, datascape and geographical scope — and mapped the relationships between them. Decision makers in financial services can assess their position on these important dimensions of open banking and set their strategic direction. Using the framework, we also illustrate how hitherto relatively closed banks with a dominant market position are starting to transform into open ecosystem players that embrace digital innovation. Likewise, we show how open banking initiatives of big tech and FinTech can be mapped on the framework. In addition, the paper reviews how regulation, market and digital technology impact open banking strategy. [less ▲]

Business-to-business transactions include several processes that can be digitized by buyers and suppliers. While prior studies have examined the performance impacts of using digital technologies, they have not investigated the alignment of such digitization between transacting parties. In this paper, we empirically examine the use of different market-based digital technologies by buyers and suppliers for these processes, and analyze the extent to which the digitization of different processes is aligned between transacting buyers and suppliers. Our field study is based on surveys of transacting agents in 174 buyer-supplier dyads about their use of digital technologies. The results indicate that there are misalignments for some processes in both the specific digital technologies buyers and suppliers use, and in the extent to which each of them uses digital technologies. By addressing these misalignments, buyers and suppliers could potentially realize greater benefits from digitized transaction processes. [less ▲]
