[less ▲]

Oversize addresses the opportunities and challenges represented by in the conception and the transformation of large spaces, such as industrial halls, and spaces that are too large in regard of current needs (empty buildings and structures…). These objects, like larger sports infrastructures, exhibitions halls, industrial facilities, stocks, etc. are very present in the territory since the XIXth century. Their conception is still open to speculation, and it becomes increasingly important to propose new ways of reusing these structures. [less ▲]

Today the understanding of design processes is fundamental in the interpretation of architectural designs, since universal rules of composition (harmony) and common ideals (beauty) have failed to support them exhaustively. This paper explores ways of engaging the design expertise of an architect as an immersive research tool allowing to recompose design processes and narratives. The research engages design practice as a tool, and is completed by the verbalization of the results. The paper exposes this modus operandi through a transversal one-day exercise in the framework of several architecture studios at Uliège [less ▲]

Beyond the playfulness of absolute freedom, and beyond the headache of impossible meaning, proximity, diversity and density inherent to the condition of layered contexts are fundamental tools for a sustainable future. AgwA architecture office was co-founded in 2003 in Brussels by the author. During the last 10 years, it has been confronted to a wide range of projects of different natures in various contexts. This paper will explore these projects through the lens of abstraction (radicalism of the formal simplicity) and of pragmatism (evidence of the functionality and of the constraints). [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Through different projects of the office, the paper explores which design strategies allow to address structure and architecture as two equally important aspects of one unique ambition in each project. The structural approaches are specific to each project. However, all procede from the a same attitude : structural principles are enounced at some point, that address the structural typology rather than its formal design. By doing so, a high flexibility is induced in the design towards the constraints of the design and construction process. [less ▲]

The authors are partners of the Brussels's based architectural firm AgwA. AgwA is involved in a large amount of architecture competitions, mainly for public buildings addressing the community. These competition projects are developed in multidisciplinary teams. In the work of AgwA, structure plays a central role in the architectural designs and their spatiality. The context of an architecture competition has important consequences on the way architects can approach the issue of structure. [less ▲]

Observing contemporary architecture, as a practitioner and teacher, we become aware of the difficulty to understand the constitutive rules of a project and even when one can identify some, they are often limited in reach. The qualifiers for the word architecture have multiplied over time: minimalism, hygienism, socio-participationism, formalism, high-tech, low-tech, sustainable and eco are some examples. After one century of avant-gardes, architectural practice has been scattered in uncountable styles and streams. This has lead to a free market situation in which architects and teachers are confronted by an almost endless catalogue of approaches and styles: between multiple-choice and pragmatist refusal, this context provokes an issue with arbitrariness and relevance. Today the design processes are fundamental for the understanding of architectural projects, since universal rules of composition (harmony) and common ideals (beauty) have failed to support them exhaustively. A possible stable common ground to all constructed projects remains in the act of construction. Where architects like Peter Zumthor or Herzog & de Meuron search a new way to use and interpret the materials and their use in our globalised world, SANAA work seems to remove materiality from architecture. This absence creates a kind of timeless spatiality which is not necessarily open or closed. However, this approach is not a negation of matter (in the sense of Semper), as making matter disappear implies a very strong commitment to materiality and very sophisticated technological solutions. This paper bears relevance for both practitioners and teachers at two levels: it explores the theoretical relevance and the practical tools of an outstanding referential architect. It explores, with the specific tools of the architect, the design process of their projects through the question of the construction. The analysis is based on both their writings and the realized projects. [less ▲]
