[more ▼] The article discusses two important influences of B. F. Skinner, and later workers in the behavior-analytic tradition, on the study of animal timing. The first influence is methodological, and is traced from the invention of schedules imposing temporal constraints or periodicities on animals in The Behavior of Organisms, through the rate differentiation procedures of Schedules of Reinforcement, to modern temporal psychophysics in animals. The second influence has been the development of accounts of animal timing that have tried to avoid reference to internal processes of a cognitive sort, in particular internal clock mechanisms. Skinner's early discussion of temporal control is first reviewed, and then three recent theories-Killeen & Fetterman's (1988) Behavioral Theory of Timing; Machado's (1997) Learning to Time; and Dragoi, Staddon, Palmer, [less ▲] Detailed reference viewed: 34 (1 ULiège)![]() Richelle, Marc ![]() in Psychologica (2004) The author continues here an electronic dialogue with Manuel Abreu, initiated on the occasion of two scientific events (Centenary of the French Psychological Society [2001] and an Homage to Paul Fraisse ... [more ▼] The author continues here an electronic dialogue with Manuel Abreu, initiated on the occasion of two scientific events (Centenary of the French Psychological Society [2001] and an Homage to Paul Fraisse in the frame of a meeting of the Association of French Language Scientific Psychology [2002]) and a parallel drawn between the careers of Paul Fraisse and Joseph Nuttin. The author discusses various lines of rupture that keep impeding any unification in psychology, any conciliation between basic research and applications, between the search for general laws and the individual approach to the subject, between cognitivist reductionism and concern with pluridimensional integration of the person. Are we to put up with such incompatibilities , as derived from two distinct epistemologies, or look beyond for complementarities? The later seems to have been Manuel Abreu's choice in his research and his teaching. The debat is still open. [more ▼] This reflection on the relations between psychology and history addresses four distinct issues. The first is the history of psychology: the importance of reference to the past, even if only to put current research and theory into perspective. Second, the essential historical dimension of human is presented as a crucial aspect in defining the very object of psychological science; the "historical psychology" approach, specifically its French variety as represented by Ignace Meyerson's legacy, is breifly discussed. Third, the contribution of psychology to the work of historians is considered. Finally, the joint involvement of both psychology and history in contemporary society is discussed with reference to the use (and abuse) of history in the construction of collective identity and to the claims for repair for offenses and damages made in the past, echoed by the declarations of guilt on the part of their perpetrators, on more exactly their descendants. These issues are discussed in the light of psychological approaches to memory and forgetting. [more ▼] As an introduction to the present thematic issue of the Anuario de Psicología, the author, indulging in the millenarist mood at the approach of the year 2000, presents some reflections on the present state of psychology and on future prospects. In spite of the fragmentation of psychology into multiple subfields, he points to some signs towards recovering unity. Attention is given especially to current trends towards restoring the importance of emotion and motivation, of action and of environment factors, the place of which had been reduced or neglected by extreme cognitivism. Although the traditional conflict as to the roots - biological or cultural - of human nature is far from being solved, a new way to look at variations, both interindividual and intraindividual, offers a possibility to reconcile the biological and socio-historical dimensions, and also to face the many problems challenging applied psychology in the future. Emphasis is made on the increasing need for pluridisciplinary, for better communication within psychology, for more efficient and earlier information and education of the public at large as what psychology is about. Given the impossibility to predict what changes human nature might undergo during the next centuries, recommandations are made to maximal flexibility, and readiness to deal with humans fully shaped by virtual reality, eventually in need of virtual psychologists. [more ▼] Among the theoretical models, Gibbon and Chruch's temporal information processing model is by far the most popular explanatory device in the domain of animal timing, and timing recorded using the peak procedure is considered to reflect pure cognitive time. Neuropharmacological breakthroughs suggest that diferent neurotransmitter systems subserve different functions or stages, as specified by the temporal information proccessing model. Cerebral activations correlated to timing performance have been described in humans. however, several questions remain unanswered, particularly those regarding the specificity of the neutral and biochemical correlates of timing performance. At the behavioral level, the dynamic aspects of timing, as well as timing patterns which cannot be explained within the framework of existing models, deserve a renewal of interest.
