[less ▲]

In scholarly publishing, blacklists aim to register fraudulent or deceptive journals and publishers, also known as “predatory”, to minimise the spread of unreliable research and the growing of fake publishing outlets. However, blacklisting remains a very controversial activity for several reasons: there is no consensus regarding the criteria used to determine fraudulent journals, the criteria used may not always be transparent or relevant, and blacklists are rarely updated regularly. Cabell’s paywalled blacklist service attempts to overcome some of these issues in reviewing fraudulent journals on the basis of transparent criteria and in providing allegedly up-to-date information at the journal entry level. We tested Cabell’s blacklist to analyse whether or not it could be adopted as a reliable tool by stakeholders in scholarly communication, including our own academic library. To do so, we used a copy of Walt Crawford’s Gray Open Access dataset (2012-2016) to assess the coverage of Cabell’s blacklist and get insights on their methodology. Out of the 10,123 journals that we tested, 4,681 are included in Cabell’s blacklist. Out of this number of journals included in the blacklist, 3,229 are empty journals, i.e. journals in which no single article has ever been published. Other collected data points to questionable weighing and reviewing methods and shows a lack of rigour in how Cabell applies its own procedures: some journals are blacklisted on the basis of 1 to 3 criteria – some of which are very questionable, identical criteria are recorded multiple times in individual journal entries, discrepancies exist between reviewing dates and the criteria version used and recorded by Cabell, reviewing dates are missing, and we observed two journals blacklisted twice with a different number of violations. Based on these observations, we conclude with recommendations and suggestions that could help improve Cabell’s blacklist service. [less ▲]

In 2019 the joint ELUNA/IGeLU Content Working Group conducted a user satisfaction survey so that key customers' opinions and concerns about Content issues could be better understood. We were looking for feedback in the form of personal opinions from content operators and managers involved in 360 KB, Alma CZ, SFX KB, Primo Central Index or Summon index. Multiple people from within the same organization were invited to share their point of view, about how they deal with Content issues and how satisfied they are with Ex Libris Support, working with Salesforce, and communications on Content issues. The survey received 226 replies from 149 identified institutions spread over 21 identified countries. [less ▲]

Hear from Primo VE sites all round the world to learn their top tips for troubleshooting Primo VE issues. Sometimes it is tricky to figure out whether the problem is arising in Alma, or is it something you have configured in Primo VE? Sometimes it’s just a plain thorny problem to sort out even if you know where to go.  We all need a little help sometimes. If your Library is new to Primo VE, then this session may be especially helpful for you. In a series of lightning talks each presenter will: (1) Describe a problem or two they encountered in Primo VE, (2) Explain how they tracked down the cause, (3) Reveal the outcome. Troubleshooting stories cover integrations, FRBR and Dedup processes, local fields, custom search boxes and working with external data sources. [less ▲]

Ex Libris's acquisition by ProQuest in 2015 has had an influence on Content operations (new approaches, consolidation of the different KBs and indexes, reorganization of Content teams, etc.). In the last few years, lots of changes have impacted library staff involved in content updates and operations: Alma has gained market share, replacing SFX for many institutions, and has become compatible with Summon, Electronic Collection contribution process has been deployed, KBART automation has been introduced, Institutional Repository Program has been reactivated, PCI Activation widget was redesigned, Content Corner sections on the Knowledge Center provide more information that in the past, etc. Moreover, the new Ex Libris Provider Zone and the new Central Discovery Index are now in the last steps of development. All these changes will form a background for this panel discussion, but it will go beyond that and include experiences from customers who are involved with e-resources management. [less ▲]

The University of Liège has five libraries, composed of 16 branches spread over 4 campuses. Prior to "go live" with Alma, the interlibrary loan service was processed using a powerful in-house solution developed with APIs. When we went live in February 2015, we decided to manage resource sharing requests in Alma. At first, one site per library was designated as resource sharing library to fulfill discipline-related requests. At the beginning of 2018, we decided to reorganize and centralize our interlibrary loan service. To do this, we have been using the default Resource Sharing library in Alma that is only used for resource sharing and we have deactivated our five resource sharing libraries. This presentation will explain the configuration and workflows set up at the University of Liège, the benefits we found in managing resource sharing in Alma and then centralizing the service. It will also outline our future projects and developments considered for our interlibrary loan service. [less ▲]
