Attributions of flint artefacts to specific geographical sources ideally require some form of independent validation through suitable petrographical and/or geochemical analyses, given the implications of raw material transfer on interpretations of prehistoric mobility and land-use strategies. We investigated the potential to ‘fingerprint’ flint from two archaeological sites in Eastern Romania – Mitoc-Malu Galben and Bistricioara-Lutărie III, using Laser Ablation – Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) in combination with multivariate statistical analysis. Our results suggest that geochemical analyses do not yet have the level of resolution required to assign single artefacts to specific geographic locations in the context of Romania and Bulgaria. The mismatches of signatures between training and test data however raise new questions and open unforeseen perspectives. [less ▲]
