This article proposes a traceability system tracking the use of tools (SysTrac), developed by the Lab for User Cognition & Innovative Design (LUCID), the Collaborative Design and Digital mediations in Architectural Engineering (COLLAeB-BATir) and the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST). This system enables the designers to encode each of their activities within 5 minutes. The collected data organize themselves in 3 categories (those on the tool, the time and the action). This article presents the first findings on the operability of this immersive method, which is set up to get back the track of the tools used by the project stakeholders on the whole collaborative design process. The reflection led to create and implement SysTrac in a practical case is detailed and the first results are illustrated. [less ▲]

Cet article présente les premiers résultats d’une étude sur l’articulation des pratiques numériques durant des processus de conception collaboratifs de longue durée. A l’aide d’un système dédié, nous tentons de tracer les usages d’outils de groupes de concepteurs distants et en co-présence, sur l’entièreté de leur activité de projet (douze semaines). L’étude relate les observations récoltées par notre méthode immersive originale, dans un premier contexte expérimental d’atelier de master. Notre réflexion cherche à mieux comprendre l’articulation entre les échanges d’information et les phases de conception, mais aussi les "modes de conversations". Elle montre comment ceux-ci s’articulent, entre les moments synchrones, repères temporels qui structurent le processus de points-clefs, et les conversations asynchrones, tous révélés par les outils connectés. A partir d’une réflexion sur les nouvelles pratiques de co-conception, cet article expose différents dispositifs innovants qui favorisent la communication pluridisciplinaire pour la conception d’un projet d’architecture, dès les premières étapes du processus cognitif. Les systèmes immersifs proposés ici par l’unité de recherche du LUCID (Lab for User & Collaboration Innovation Design de l’Université de Liège) questionnent les nouveaux usages que permettent les espaces de réalité augmentée. Dans le cadre de la problématique des échanges communicationnels outillés entre plusieurs concepteurs, cet article se focalise sur l’impact des outils numériques sur des artefacts formels favorisant la collaboration. Plus particulièrement, il analyse les atouts des espaces de réalité augmentée en tant qu’aide à la communication et sur les différents types d'échanges naissants dans ce processus de conception. Son analyse porte sur l’usage de nouveaux dispositifs de revue de projet, tels que l’emploi de tablettes d’annotation partagées en temps réel, la documentarisation participative sur un mur augmenté, ou encore l’annotation projetée sur maquette physique. This article describes the first implementation of a new SAR, spatial augmented reality, equipped here with a IPM, interactive projection mapping. It presents and analyses it as a new configuration of CSCW, Computer-Supported Cooperative Work. It reveals its success (support encouraging the collective un- derstanding of complex shapes) but also the precautions and limits of this system of graphic interactive projection on a 3D model (delicate calibration, cognitive overload of utilization). It gives details of the adjustments to the status of co- participants (more passive), the status of work space (becoming an extended we- space) and the status of the common artifact (unmovable but polymorphic). This article presents a methodological approach which helped the software development of an architectural modeler that aims to support the life cycle of buildings with a modular construction system. The modeler assists the building composition processes, the production of useful documents like drawing plans, quantities and specifications, and the evaluation of the thermal performance of the building at any phase of its design. Conducted within a multidisciplinary team of architects engineers, computer engineers and ergonomists, this methodology is based on a constant interaction between the various skills, so that the different perspectives are systematically integrated into the decision process. The methodology is based on the analysis of three fields of functions (composition - production and evaluation) which are considered simultaneously through a theoretical framework stemming from ergonomics: Activity Theory [Engeström 1987]. At first, the software development context is presented. Then, the choice of the Activity Theory as a framework for the analysis will be motivated. The next section relates the multiple concepts of the methodology to each others, in order to identify the principles as well as the inputs and the outputs. Each step in its implementation is then described, followed by the results in terms of the software interface. Finally, the discussion that will follow will consider the contributions and limitations of this methodological approach in the understanding of a system, in order to offer an efficient IT support. In this article, we present a Building Information Modeler essential for creating, viewing and evaluating the performance of a modular building project, based on a digital model. First, we explain our approach, called "by components" and its central notion of "catalog", capable of supporting the virtualization of the construction system in the modeler. Secondly, we describe the software architecture established for this original modeller, based on a dual-purpose data model: representing the catalogs of components and allowing the encoding of a specific project within the software. Then, our article will introduce the products obtained, in terms of operating geometric and semantic information from the catalog components. In particular, it will show how, depending on the driving activity types, these productions can be generated under different operating formats. Finally, the article will introduce the limits of this Building Information Modeler and the future opportunities provided by its extensibility. [less ▲]

This paper specifically focuses on one aspect of the experience design process, sometimes even stressed as one if its shortcomings: the time it takes to properly gain insights about possible real-life experiences of proximal or distal end-users. In the process of making sense of sometimes conflicting viewpoints found in the literature about timing and its possible impact on design processes and outcomes, this paper compares four distinct settings and addresses the following research questions: • How “time-framing” the design process possibly filters (positively or negatively) the awareness designers have about end-users; • How the experimental protocols, their inherent limitations and artificialities, do shape the designers’ involvement in the process of designing for an end-user’s experience. Results put techniques for «disciplined creativity», such as brainstorming or analogies, front-to-front with more reflective approaches that unfold over more time, and discuss respective but complementary added values of both. Cet article présente un projet de recherche nommé SpatioData qui a duré trois ans et dont l’objectif visait l’exploitation de nouvelles technologies de l’information et de la communication (TIC) pour proposer un outil innovant permettant la réutilisation d’informations liées au bâtiment. Nous montrerons, au travers d’enquêtes et d’interviews, l’importance de faciliter l’accès aux données rattachées à l’historique du bâtiment via un système innovant et intuitif qui permettra à tous les acteurs du secteur de la construction et de la gestion immobilière de trouver et de partager des informations utiles, c’est-à-dire des données spécialisées, contextualisées et spatialisées, en temps réel. Nous listerons des recommandations afin que ces données, qui auraient été perdues ou jetées, puissent être automatiquement mises en relation avec le lieu de l’intervention (géoréférencement) et le type d’intervenant (utilisateur) permettant ainsi de compléter une base de données spatialisées basée sur un modèle de bâtiment spécifique. In the framework of the design process of a multimodal 3D simulation environment to support architects’ acoustic tasks, we wanted to gain a better understanding of how architects are able to discriminate the sounds using audio and/or visual inputs. This study explores how 2D pictures of rooms do support or impede the auditory evaluation of a space (specifically reverberation). The paper describes an experiment evaluating participants rankings of perceived acoustic reverberation when presented with congruent (coherent) or non-congruent (conflicting) evocative pictures of architectural spaces. We found that the congruent pictures had a positive impact on task performance while the noncongruent pictures had no significant effect. Moreover the effect of the expertise (professional background) of participants was investigated. We found differences between architects and non-architects in the way they performed the task, and they processed reverberation assessments. Taken together, the findings of this study contribute to the question of usefulness of expensive multimodal 3D simulation environment. [less ▲]
