Despite the complexity and dynamism of African media industries, the study of African realities remains marginal in media studies curricula worldwide. Whenever they are the object of attention, people tend to refer to the same few, well known examples, such as the work of Ousmane Sembène in relation to the history of African cinema, or the role of social media in the Arab Spring in courses devoted to digital media theory. International film and media studies conferences such as those organized by the US-based Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS), the European Network for Cinema and Media Studies (NECS), the International Communication Association (ICA), and the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) mirror a similar situation, with very limited numbers of panels or papers focused on African media organized or presented at each of these gatherings. But Africa is today at the center of important, wide-ranging processes of media globalization, largely connected to interactions happening along south-south axis, whose study can offer original and important insights for the understanding of processes of media globalization the world over. On the ground of these assumptions, in this chapter we will briefly analyze some of the causes for the marginalization of non-western perspectives in media studies, in order to discuss the theoretical basis for developing an approach to the study of media and globalization “from” the South that could. bring to light the universal value of knowledge produced in relation to African realities and epistemologies. In the last part of this chapter, we will show the relevance of this approach through a few examples based on African case studies. [less ▲]

This edited collection of essays analyses the transformations that discourses and practices of responsibility have undergone in Africa since the early 1990s. In most of the continent’s countries, this period has been marked by the introduction of neoliberal reforms, partial liberalization of the political landscape, increased foreign investment, the multiplication of religious movements, the exponential growth of migration fluxes, the emergence of new media, and the explosion of the AIDS pandemic. The core assumption of the book is that these phenomena have significantly modified the way responsibility is imagined, discussed and organized in African societies, and have contributed to transforming this concept into one of the key moral ideas by which these societies think about, and act upon their present and future power configurations. <br />To discuss this central hypothesis, the book’s contributions examine discourses and practices of responsibility in nine different settings, and reflect on the broader changes in regimes of responsibility to which they take part. By doing so, this collection of essays will offer insight that develop a stronger grasp on the interaction between moral practices and discourses, and specific political, economic and social transformations taking place today in Africa. At the same time, while focusing on case studies from the African continent, this collection enters into a dialogue with the emerging corpus of studies in the field of ethics, providing to it a set of analytical perspectives that can help further enlarge its theoretical and geographical scope. Latin American telenovelas began to be widely broadcast on African screens between the late 1970s and early 1980s, and today are among the most popular entertainment products on the continent. The content, aesthetic and narrative format of telenovelas have become a model for many African video film producers, who have incorporated some of telenovelas’ defining elements in their productions in order to attract local audiences. This special issue analyses the impact of telenovelas’ circulation in Africa by focusing on the ‘uses’ African audiences and media producers make of them. Why do telenovelas travel so well around sub-Saharan Africa? How do African audiences make sense of them? And what impact do these media products have on local media entrepreneurs and on the aesthetics and narrative aspects of the contents they produce? In this introduction we provide some background and data about the history and the political economy of telenovelas’ circulation in Africa, and answer the questions raised above by connecting the finding of the essays included in the special issue to ongoing debates on the global circulation of melodrama, on the transformation of African screen media, and on the performative dimension of African audiences’ engagement with foreign media forms. With the introduction of new recording and editing technologies, documentary film production has witnessed important growth and diversification, but the process of creating and consolidating a viable and solid documentary film production environment still faces numerous challenges which must be the necessary starting point for any thorough discussion of the relationship between documentary films and human rights in Africa today. In order to tackle these issues, this chapter begins with a section that, through the discussion of a wide range of materials collected between 2012 and 2013 for a continent-wide, team-based research project on the state of the documentary film industry across Africa, provides a comprehensive (although inevitably general) analysis of the main challenges that African documentary filmmakers face today. This analysis opens up the space for a critical discussion of the interaction between human rights discourses and documentary film production in the continent. Human rights discourses have been the object of much scholarly debate in Africa, and a discussion of these debates in relation to the challenges highlighted in the first section helps better understanding the field of tensions within which African documentary filmmakers are operating and the original aesthetic and narrative solutions that are emerging from it. Over the past three decades, South-South economic interactions have multiplied. Within this landscape, media industries have come to occupy a relevant position, at the crossroad between soft power and hard economic interests. Numerous studies analysed the South-South circulation of media products, but many aspects of the ongoing interactions remain under-researched. This article contributes to this emerging field of scholarship by analysing the discourses and practices of collaboration that have emerged between the Indian and the Nigerian film industries over the past few years. By analysing the experiences of a few southern Nigerian and Indian film professionals who attempted to develop transnational collaborations, this article investigates the ambiguities of the affinities existing between Nollywood and Bollywood and interrogates the prospects for the creation of effective interactions between them. With the introduction of analogue and (later) digital technologies, many sub-Saharan African countries have witnessed the emergence and rapid growth of commercial video film industries. The Nigerian industry, Nollywood, is the case studies that raised most scholarly interest, generating the formulation of an analytical model which has often influenced our understanding of other instances of video film production around the continent. This chapter proposes a comparative analysis of the history of video filmmaking in three sub-Saharan African countries (Nigeria, Ethiopia and Côte d’Ivoire) in order to complicate our understanding of African video film beyond the Nollywood model. Drawing from ethnographic materials collected during fieldwork conducted in each of these countries, this chapter offers an original contribution to the existing debate on the impact of analogue and digital technologies on the transformation of African cinema which highlight the impact of specific local political, economic, and infrastructural contexts on the development of video film industries around the continent. Over the past decade, Ethiopian films have come to dominate the screening schedules of the many cinemas in Ethiopia’s capital city Addis Ababa and other urban centers. Despite undergoing an unprecedented surge in production and popularity in Ethiopia and in the diaspora, this phenomenon has been broadly overlooked by African film and media scholars and Ethiopianists alike. This collection of essays and interviews on cinema in Ethiopia represents the first work of its kind and establishes a broad foundation for the furthering of the scholarship. Taking an interdisciplinary approach to the topic and bringing together contributions from both Ethiopian and international scholars, the collection offers new and alternative narratives for the development of screen media in Africa. The book’s relevance reaches far beyond its specific locale of Ethiopia as contributions focus on a broad range of topics such as commercial and genre films, diaspora filmmaking and the role of women in the film industry while discussing multiple forms of screen media, from satellite TV to “video films”. Bringing both the historical and contemporary moments of cinema in Ethiopia into the critical frame offers alternative considerations for the already radically changing critical paradigm surrounding the understandings of “African Cinema.” [less ▲]

This article analyzes the ways in which a Nigerian video film about human trafficking is received by Nigerian women who experienced trafficking in their migration itinerary to Italy. This radically contextualized case study is used as a methodological “lockpick” to open up new lines of enquiry into the relationship that southern Nigerian video films create with their audiences. The essay argues that, by virtue of their specific “addressivity” (Barber 2007), the genre of Nigerian video films that focus on female migration and prostitution participates in the creation of moral publics that are concerned with the definition of the postcolonial subject’s responsibility in shaping his/her own destiny. L’industrie nigériane, Nollywood, est le cas d’étude qui a suscité le plus d’intérêt, contribuant à la formulation d’un modèle analytique qui a infl uencé notre compréhension d’autres exemples de production en cours sur le continent. Cet article propose une analyse comparative de l’histoire de la production vidéo dans trois pays d’Afrique subsaharienne (Nigéria, Ethiopie et Côte d’Ivoire), afi n de complexifi er notre approche de la production vidéo africaine au-delà du modèle de Nollywood. This article considers the economic effects of corporatization processes in Africa through an analysis of the intervention of French media companies in the economy of Nigerian video film distribution in Frenchspeaking West Africa, and particularly in Côte d’Ivoire. In a global context that is marked by the price volatility of raw materials such as oil and copper, screen media have been described as the new ‘African black gold’, attracting the interest of a large number of both African and non- African players and setting in motion a process of the ‘corporate takeover’ of African screen media industries. Analysing this process can help us to understand wider economic transformations in Africa. This article examines what we might call the ‘technopolitics’ of Nigerian video films’ circulation and their historical transformations by examining the microdimension of the experiences of a number of West African video film producers and distributors, and the macro-dimension of the activities of a French corporation, CanalPlus, which is investing in Nollywood’s distribution. It argues that Nollywood has acquired a strategic function for French enterprises that are investing in Africa, as evidenced by the transformation of Côte d’Ivoire’s role in the economy of Nigerian video films’ transnational circulation. This suggests a new and transformed dimension to France’s economic and political relationships with sub-Saharan Africa, as well as a more nuanced assessment of the politics of African neoliberalism. Trade and cultural exchange between Africa and the rest of the global South have existed for centuries, but after the end of the Cold War, these connections have expanded and diversified dramatically, with emerging economies such as China, India, and Brazil becoming increasingly important both as sources of trade and as a destination for African migrants. Though these trends have attracted growing scholarly attention, there has not been a close look at the breadth and variety of this exchange, or of its deeper social impact--until now. This collection brings together a wide array of scholarly perspectives to explore the movement of people, commodities, and ideas between Africa and the wider global South. This article focuses on the recent phenomenon of Ethiopian films that prominently feature Chinese characters. As the success of these films relies on representing a stereotypical Chinese ‘Other’, and in reference to China’s ever-growing presence in African countries, we pose broader questions relating to the place of ethnicity, race and national identity in popular cultural productions emerging from the continent. Through an analysis which caters for multiple and at times oppositional interpretations, we argue that the representation of the ‘Chinese Other’ constructed by these films at times criticizes and at times reasserts existing stereotypes and prejudices. The overriding view and intent of the filmmakers to use Chinese characters mainly as narrative devices is often functional in the development of specific, inward-looking social and political criticisms. But this attitude inevitably forces the films to overlook the key issue underlying discourses about otherness in Ethiopian popular media – namely the issue of how to deal with racial multiplicity in a society that defines belonging along rigid and exclusionary terms.
