Moyens de communication ou interfaces nouvelles pour la conception et l’innovation architecturale, les outils de conception numérique sont aujourd’hui à l’origine du développement de nouvelles morphologies, souvent plus complexes. Au delà de ces morphologies dites « non standard », ces outils en perpétuelle évolution impactent plus largement la complexité ressentie par les architectes dans leur activité professionnelle. Les «architectes stars», entourés de leurs équipes de développeurs, ont pu s’équiper très tôt d’outils numériques dédiés et correspondants à leurs besoins pour surmonter certaines lacunes technologiques auxquelles ils ont été confrontés dès l’émergence des premiers logiciels, initialement développés pour d’autres domaines tels que la conception automobile. Les agences de plus petite envergure, aux moyens plus limités, n’ont pas eu cette possibilité. Dès lors, quelles sont les stratégies adoptées par les bureaux d’architecture de petites et moyennes tailles faisant face aux mêmes difficultés? Cette contribution analyse comment les bureaux d’architecture belges se positionnent par rapport à la complexité croissante des outils numériques, à la fois en termes d'utilisation et d'interdisciplinarité. This paper recounts twenty years of experience in a multidisciplinary agency in which digital technology, and particularly BIM, has made it possible to decompartmentalize architectural design and deploy new collaborative models in architecture. Firstly, we look back at the initial promises of digital in architectural practice and the obstacles and shortcuts taken over the past decades. Secondly, we recount the emergence of the new multidisciplinary collaborative model developed within the agency. Based on this experience of multidisciplinary collaboration 4.0, we relate two perspectives under development based on digital technology, including the BIM collaborative process: systemic sustainability in architectural design on the one hand and the extension of the project management mission to facility management on the other hand. Through this article, we address the impact of digital technology on the metamorphosis of architectural practice through collaborative multi-disciplinarity. [less ▲]

Il s’appuie sur de nombreux suivis de projets réalisés dans les pays partenaires. La mise en commun des expériences réalisées a permis le développement d’une plateforme d’apprentissage accessible aux enseignants désireux d’utiliser la méthodologie proposée. Following recent changes in architecture, due to the introduction of new technological processes such as BIM, and the relationship to the matter due to the introduction of circularity, this article shares a trial experience of a new learning model based on the two following topics: BIM and circularity. The learning experience, which is the result of a collaboration between two European projects, was tested during a one-day study carried out by an international team and involving 25 students. Through this case study,we question two aspects: on the one hand, the relevance of the learning methods on topics such as BIM and circularity, and on the other hand, BIM as a lever for integrating circularity into architecture in design phase. Over the past few decades, architectural practice and, consequently, the design studio have been increasingly challenged. Indeed, the development of digital tools and parametric design, in particular, has given rise to a new type of architectural knowledge. Among the IJAC publications over the past three years, we highlight the current diversity of vocabulary used to discuss this knowledge and develop why we focus our study on conceptual knowledge. We then report a learning situation through studio design education. This paper finally presents the steps developed to measure this knowledge and hypothesizes on the future work needed in order to have relevant quantitative results. The purpose of this paper is to observe the evolution of students' understanding when shifting from a traditional teacher-student relationship to an engaging learning environment, considering the specificities of parametric, and not to suggest a strict method to follow when learning parametric. This could guide teachers to adapt to their own situations. [less ▲]

L’intégration des outils BIM et les passeports matériaux permettrait d’étudier la faisabilité technique et la rentabilité économique de différents scénarios de déconstruction sélective et de réutilisation sur site ou hors site afin d’établir plus facilement l’audit de pré-démolition. Despite its importance, the specific issue of performance and reading of sketches in augmented reality does not seem to have been analyzed recently. Indeed, even if many articles have been published in connection with VR or RA in architecture, the questions studied are very varied and often related to specific applications. Recent literature, based on new technologies available since 2016, is also very limited. The research presented here was carried out within the pedagogical framework offered by the construction course taught to first-year students in the Faculty of Architecture of ULiège. The general objective of this course is to introduce students to a graphic approach framework that links construction technologies to the development of an architectural project. Students explore different construction techniques through the drawing of technical details. A first exploratory approach was carried out last year during the development of a prototype. It shows us the feasibility of the project and some pitfalls to avoid. The main objective of the project is to study the impact of augmented reality on the performance and skills acquisition of architecture students. It focuses on reading plans and sketches of technical construction drawings in order to identify the contributions of 3D spatialization. [less ▲]

This research argues for enhancement of the ideation process in architectural design through computational approach. European directives on building’s performances, state that, by the end of December 2020 all buildings must be near zero energy. This leads to new reflections, especially with current conceptual approach in architecture. Traditional workflows, in which early decisions are the most critical, have focused on refining concepts with little or no regard on whether the design was good to begin with. Moreover, although the growing information load makes it harder to apprehend current demand, the ideation process still relies essentially on intuition. We therefore question the intuitiveness in decision- making at the conceptual stage, more precisely, what we describe as the ideation point. In order to study the ideation process in architecture, this presentation will explore studies in creative thinking, mainly, the Geneplore model, a widely used framework in psychology to study creative cognition. By breaking down the general structure leading to creativity, certain aspects can be identified as showing potential for computational enhancement thus improving the overall creative process and consequently, ideation. Computation would therefore be considered as a new way to think and conceive architecture, and not merely and solely as a mean of execution. [less ▲]

The exponential emergence of BIM in the construction sector reflects the effectiveness of this work process. Adopted by many AEC agencies, BIM explores new dimensions and acquires new skills almost every day. We note that this progression of BIM to new skills is particularly developed by and for project designers. However for several years, BIM has very often been represented as a set of actors around a digital model, linked it by IFC links. The intrinsic objective of BIM, such as Building Information Model and Modeling, is therefore that each actor can understand, retrieve and use, through the digital avatar, nongraphical data, without any particular expertise. As part of a sustainable BIM development in the integrated architecture-engineering BSolutions firm, we study the correlation of the visual translation of digital data on the digital model and its understanding. We work on the most appropriate way to transcribe the results of sustainable expertise, such as thermal comfort, through the digital model for each project stakeholder. Our research highlight the potentials of parametric tools in BIM workflow but also the breaks encountered in the acquisition of complementary expertise and the development of a new hybrid skills profile. The current change in societal model, from linear to circular, coupled with the digital transition, is changing certain architectural practices. The emergence of BIM (Building Information Model, Modeling, Management) generates an evolution of the work process and collaborative tools. However, the BIM tools hardly integrate digital information of the elements found during the material inventory. Moreover, these tools are not really adapted to the modeling of formally complex elements. The designers are thus led to appropriate new tools such as those of parametric design. Although for a long time reserved for "star-architects" projects, we will rely on a Belgian research showing that these tools are gradually appearing in architectural agencies. Our study has shown that the use of parametric design can be a lever of creativity in architectural practice as well as a springboard for the integration of reuse materials. We therefore ask several questions in this regard: What are the challenges of a circular architectural approach? How can digital tools be used in this process? Does parametric have a place in a reuse perspective? This contribution analyses how to include a form of circularity in architecture and mainly around the implementation of reuse elements. We propose a workflow between BIM and parametric tools as a means of valuing reuse in architecture. We will approach these questions with concrete examples illustrating the relevance of the link between parametric and reuse. [less ▲]

L’évolution des besoins des architectes en matière d’outils de conception les a poussés à adopter et adapter des outils d’abord dédiés à d’autres secteurs. Certains de ces outils dits paramétriques sont davantage utilisés dans les grands bureaux d’architecture que dans les petites agences, qui représentent pourtant la majorité des acteurs de la conception architecturale (Stals, Elsen, & Jancart, 2017). Le papier se concentre dès lors sur l’analyse du ressenti d’architectes intégrés à ces plus petites structures et participant à une journée de formation. Leur appréhension des outils de modélisation paramétrique est évaluée comparativement en début et en fin de formation selon trois attributs émergeant tant de la littérature que de leurs propres réponses. L’article développe donc les résultats selon trois attributs : créativité, aspects techniques, fonctionnalités. La pertinence de l’usage de tels outils dans de petites structures est également discutée. [less ▲]

For thirty years, sustainable architecture has focused on the energy performance of buildings and energy savings. Today, other economic models are being studied and the linear model will be next to the circular model in a few years. For mainly environmental and economic reasons, society is once again interested in reuse and circular economy. Simultaneously, the collaborative process BIM is changing the workflow of construction stakeholders, including architects. This article is part of a research on the relationship between the circularity of (and in) architecture and the BIM process. Through it, we want to identify ways to include this model in the daily practice of architects thanks to the BIM, taking into account the brakes and levers linked to the latter. [less ▲]

Within the course "Digital Culture and Generative Processes of Form" taught as part of the Master Program of the Faculty of Architecture ULiège, our main objective is to develop themes related to formal and material research within the architectural project approach. This perspective seems relevant: it combines, by digital means, the emergence of form, its control and the media devoted to the materialization of designed objects (in their broadest sense). Based on parametric modeling, this relevance is reflected in the use of tools whose performance in terms of design assistance allows increased project control. The use of design tools has taken off in recent years. However it would be useless here to follow a trend but rather wise to examine the methodological opportunities that these tools offer. We propose that students address the geometrical theories behind the research of architects concerned by the genesis of form and architectural space. We introduce students to the use of the programming language specific to the selected modeling software to generate complex 3D forms and to control them. Based on project-based learning, teaching is oriented to support students’ projects. Students learn through different means and information sources: theoretical contains, expert interventions (GH-Archicad© connection, Dynamo© connection, RElab Liège Fablab), exercises and tutorials. This paper starts with an overview of parametric modeling pedagogy, notably in regard of mathematical perspective and the inputs it generates in the design process. Les outils de conception numérique et plus particulièrement les outils de modélisation paramétrique sont en train de modifier le processus de conception architecturale. De nombreux chercheurs ont étudié les influences des outils paramétriques dans de grands bureaux dont les pratiques paramétriques sont relativement poussées. Ils font état de leur influence et de l’intérêt croissant pour les architectes compte tenu des nouvelles perspectives qu'ils ouvrent (rythme de travail et diversité morphologique). Cependant, les applications dans les agences d’architecture de petite et moyenne taille (PME) sont de ce fait ignorées. Cette contribution analyse comment les PME belges se positionnent par rapport à la complexité croissante des outils numériques de manière générale, et à l’appréhension des logiciels paramétriques. Nous analysons les résultats recueillis à la lumière de la théorie de Sébastien Bourbonnais sur les notions de « lâcher prise » ou de « laisser aller ». [less ▲]
