This research aims to evaluate the interest for geographers to use Google Scholar(GS) over the commercial databases Web of Science (WoS), Scopus (multidisciplinary databases), and GeoRef (specialized in geosciences). To achieve our main objective, we performed searches in order to verify to which extent researchers' citations are covered by the search engine and the three commercial bibliographic databases mentioned. Our sample consists of the citations of three dissertations in Geography presented in the Uliège (Belgium) Department of Geography during the 2014-2015 academic year, respectively in Climatology, Tourism and Geomatics. In order to have an overview of the results’ “overlap” for the bibliographic tools, and their "unique" contribution, Venn diagrams were constructed for each thesis. The Venn diagrams indicate that GS finds almost all bibliographic references and returns the greatest number of "unique" results. The “overlap” rates between the commercial databases is very high and GeoRef stands out with very low results. GS is an important and rich complementary tool, with a more varied panel of publishers, languages and countries of publication. [less ▲]

This study aims to highlight what benefits, if any, Google Scholar (GS) has for academic literature searches in the field of geography, compared to three commercial bibliographic databases: Web of Science (WoS) and FRANCIS (multidisciplinary databases) and GeoRef (specialized in geosciences). To ensure a valid comparison, identical bibliographic searches were applied using each of the four bibliographic tools. To exclude automatic variations of the ten keywords tested, they were placed between quotation marks and searched only in the “title” field of the respective search tools’ interfaces. The results were limited to bibliographic references published from 2005 to 2009. In order to assess the repeatability of the results, the exact same process was repeated monthly between November 2010 and July 2011. Initially the whole set of results was analyzed, after which the search results for two keywords (selected since they yielded a manageable number of results) were studied in more detail. The results indicate that GS search results show a large degree of overlap with those of the other databases but, moreover, yield numerous unique hits, which should be useful to researchers in both the fields of human and physical geography. GS leads the other tools widely on number of results, independently of keyword, subfield, year of publication, or time of search. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Set up by the University of Liège, ORBi (Open Repository and Bibliography) knew a lightning increase of the online posted references since its creation in 2008. The official launch took place on November 26th, 2008 and after considerable efforts on behalf of the team which manages the tool, and researchers who introduce themselves their publications, the contents of the repository managed to reach a value of 64245 references among which 38670 with full text. Working for the Library of Geography of the University of Liege, I found interesting to analyze the number of visualizations and downloads of the references (2005 to 2007) posted online by the ULg geographer’s, and the population interested in this literature. The highlight is on WHO and WHERE are the internet users visualizing and downloading ORBi references from? In order to detect the population using this scientific literature, we analyzed the user IP and their distribution in the world. The data was obtained from a MaxMind database. The type of population using this scientific literature: researchers, individuals, public or private companies was also determined. [less ▲]

Nowadays, analysis of bibliographic databases is a current practice, especially the comparison between traditional, commercial databases and search engines as Google Scholar that has wind right aft. A great deal of researchers analyzed the contents or the citations system of various databases. Some compared the contents of several databases, for specific scientific domains, searching by author (Mikki, 2010; Cecchino, 2010) or keywords (Falagas, 2008). There are no studies concerning the precise domain of geography. This study covers bibliographical databases specialized in geography (physical and human) and Google Scholar search engine. This analyze will point out to geographers what a research in Google Scholar search engine can offer, regarding exclusively contents, in comparison with traditional databases: WOS, Francis and Georef. This analysis does not aim to underline the difference of databases features, but to show what a research in certain databases can bring, from the point of view of contents. To perform this study, we use keywords (in English) and establish them for the physical and human geography according to actual subjects of the respective fields. The research will bring new concrete results given that no comparison of this type was led between the traditional databases used by geographers and Google Scholar. We also hope to give an idea of the possible evolution of the contents for Google Scholar search engine during the determined period of our study. [less ▲]
