[less ▲]

This short and prospective article deals with Johannes Hartmann (1568-1631), who is reputed as having been the first professor of chemistry at the University of Marburg. ‘For Hartmann’, Bruce T. Moran has written, ‘the road to the laboratory of chemical medicine in Marburg began in Kassel, at the court of the university’s protector, the Landgrave Moritz of Hesse (1572-1632)’. Having studied at Wittenberg, Hartmann was appointed as a mathematician in Kassel and was chosen to fill the chair of mathematics when the incumbent died. He received a medical degree in 1606 and ‘began a brief correspondence with the French Paracelsian, Joseph Duchesne (Quercetanus) (c. 1544-1609), who had visited Kassel in 1604’. Moritz had become captivated by the study of occult philosophy, especially in relation to alchemy, and was well on his way to amassing an extensive collection of alchemical, Cabbalistic, and Paracelsian manuscripts, and to fashioning a court circle of alchemical and medical adepts. Thus, ‘in 1608, he enthusiastically received a suggestion from Hartmann for founding a collegium chymicum at Marburg’ and he ‘chose to invest Hartmann with a new university role and a new title – Professor publicus chymiatriae’. In early modern times, the chalybs « steel » was reduced as a drug in powder or flings to be integrated in various preparations. two German physicians of the seventeenth century, more or less attached to the Paracelsus’ system, Johannes hartmann and Eberhard Gockel, use it to cure « obstructions of the liver », dropsy, as it was also linked to a disturbance of the liver, or diseases of the spleen. We provide an example of the latter in relationship with the uterus, about which the physician tries to explain the physiological process. another resort to chalybs treats with the cessation of the menses, considered as one of the causes of cancer. the inquiry is extended by a comparison between the German use of the chalybs and the latter as it is related in Italy and England, with a lexical questioning about the terms cancer, cancrosus, cancerus, cancrous, etc [less ▲]

Unlike in printing centers like Geneva, Neuchâtel or Amsterdam, Liège did not maintain direct and constant relationships with great authors of the Enlightenment. Its printing businesse was mainly dedicated to the reproduction of bestsellers. It did not keep archives of its commerce. As a paradoxical result, Léonard Defrance's paintings illustrating the Liège publishing factories are well-known and often reproduced; but the contecnt of the bundles of books represented by Defrance remains in some shadow except for the counterfeits of the major philosophical wroks. Thus our research about this printing centre was concentrated on typographical elements that allow us to identify what was really printed and distributed by Clément Plomteux or Jean François Bassompierre. The latter devoted an important part of his business to copying best-sellers of the "second rank" whose unappreciated editorial and chcronological varietes are now more discernible and accessible dut to the Internet. In this article we record many unknown editions of educational books published in Liège, and we look through the window they open on the culture of the second half of the eighteenth century. THis study intends to inscribe the Liège booktrade in the history of bessellers that is dominated by centers like the Société Typographique de Neuchâtel (studies by the project "The French Book Trade in Enlightenment Europe and the STN database"). We consider how the idea of a Germano-Persian kinship was rejected particularly in the British circle of scholars centered on Brian Walton’s Polyglot Bible, (1654). We first treat of the context and main issues of a discovery which could have opened the road to a precursor of modern Indo-European comparativism. The diversions or disroutings took various forms: comparative parceling (John Greaves, Elementa linguae persicae, 1649), reversion of the parceling (Edward Bernard in Hickes’ Institutiones grammaticae anglo-saxonicae, et moeso-gothica, 1689), war-contact hypothesis (Thomas Hyde, Historia religionis veterum Persarum, 1700), grammatical occultation (Angelo à St. Joseph, Gazophylacium, 1684). However, Marc Zuer Boxhorn’ precursory views about the Scythian origins are kept alive by Brian Walton). We include those diversions in Leibniz’ thinking as reflected in his correspondence, especially with Johan Gabriel Sparfwenfeld (Leibniz Bref till Sparfvenfelt 1695-1700, 1883). [less ▲]
