Chicken raising in Vietnam is still spontaneous, small scale, scattered, backward, low productivity, and especially faces many risks which would reduce the efficiency and profits of the farmers. This study aims to analyze risks and suggest some prevention solutions in the chicken raising in a case study of the Kim Dong district, Hung Yen province based on the questionnaire survey data of 40 representative chicken raising farmers. The results showed that, the most popular risks of input came from the high feed price (80%), and the easily engaged in diseases breed (72.5%). In the chicken raising period, they got the risks of diseases (90%), 35% had experienced with massive death. There were 80% farmers found difficulty or slow consumption, 70% was at risk of reducing or low output prices, and 65% responded that the market sometimes was distorted by the traders. The study suggests that, farmers need to have a strong cooperative to create a greater power in the negotiation with feed providing companies; select good prestige, ensured quality breed providers; reorganize their production process, regularly vaccinate, carefully monitored for early detection of epidemics, quarantine sick chickens from the flock, treat the diseases completely; update the market information to raise at the suitable production size. Government and local authorities should support them about market information so they can make the most appropriate and beneficial decision about production. [less ▲]

This study aims to analyze the performance and its affecting factors in the chicken contract farming in a case study of Hoa Thach commune, Quoc Oai province, Hanoi, based on the questionnaire surveyed data of 40 representative chicken contract farmers in the study site in 2016. The results showed that surveyed household’s head was medium (37 years old), low educational level (80% secondary school), but they had experience (87.5% had more than 3 years of raising), with quite large raising scale (popular 3001 to 5000 heads). Feed cost was too high (87.7% total cost), led farmers to lower performance, and situation of depending on the market. The farm income was rather low, accounted for only 10.4% total revenue. Results also showed that, any decrease in labor cost, improvement in by - products revenue or egg laying rate will lead to the enhancement of chicken raising performance for contract farmers. Therefore, the farmers had better reduced the feed cost, better manage their labor, exploit by- products and improve the egg laying rate to enhance the farm performance. [less ▲]

Chicken raising in Kim Dong district, Hung Yen province of Vietnam is currently still in the first stage of development with spontaneous, small-scale, and easily vulnerable. These things lead to the inefficiency in the chain activities, and in the long run, all the chain actors will have less benefit. This study aims to analyze and assess the real situation of linkages in the chicken chain and proposed some recommendations to strengthen the linkages and improve the chicken chain in the Kim Dong district based on the questionnaire survey data of chicken chain actors. The findings showed that the chicken chain in the study site was undeveloped. The chain actors included input suppliers, chicken raising farmers, traders, retailers and some restaurants and supermarkets. Farmers accounted for the most important role. The other actors in the chain play a role of a bridge between producers and consumers. Processing agent did not appear in the chain. The linkages in the chain were simple, informal and loose. The actors were discrete and lack of cooperation. To promote the linkage of the chicken chain, farmers should improve their linkages to improve their strength, their voice and their power. Farmers could establish cooperation groups or cooperatives to support each other. Cooperation among chain actors should be enhanced to form a tight and official chain. Local authorities should support in finding markets, creating a bridge and an environment for chain actors. Extension and educational institutions should support farmers and other actors and stakeholders to improve knowledge of the chain, so they could understand the benefit and form effective chain. Tea is one of key crops which substantially contributes to Vietnam’s annual exports, creates jobs and raises income for farmers. However, tea production farmers are still facing many difficulties such as low farm management, disease control, etc. Of which, tea consumption is considered to be the most challenge and the main reasons is the low cooperation between farmers and other stakeholders in the tea value chain. This study aims to look more deeply and find out the linkage and benefit of farmers in the model of cooperation between farmers and tea processing company through contract and none contract tea production in the study site. The results shown that the contract farming in tea production in the study sites was still not tightened and did not reflect clearly its real roles. However, it was gradually reflected it s roles as the fully contract farmers (worker farmers) received the highest productivity, turnover and value added and the most satisfied, the contract farmers (partly contract) achieved not as high benefit but quite satisfied with their results and contract. None contract farmers although received reasonable results recently but they still did not assure the production, they would like to engage in some kinds of cooperation in the future. [less ▲]

In Vietnam, the consumption of dairy products has increased dramatically in recent years due to rising incomes. To meet this growing demand, and reduce imports, the Vietnamese Government has encouraged milk production. In this context, our research is primarily interested in the distribution of value added among the actors within the fresh milk chain observed in the province of Son La. Our study demonstrates that value added within the fresh milk chain was unequally distributed among actors in the chain in the bias orientation to the non-farmers (non-producer). The key feature in the chain was the dairy farmers, but they were also the most vulnerable actors of the chain. Given the balance of power among the actors, the most appropriate method to promote the added value for dairy producers is to help a better control on their production costs by improving the management at the dairy farm. Since 2000, we can observe important changes in traditional production systems of coastal communes in North Vietnam. Faced with relatively low incomes, rice farms converted the surfaces available to them in aquaculture ponds. These are difficult to reverse conversions were carried out by farmers seeking to improve family income in areas of relatively low rice productivity. These changes have had a significant impact on the revenues generated in coastal villages with changes in work organization and the upstream business opportunities for feed plants. This type of family aquaculture has grown rapidly to meet domestic demand but also to export markets. Faced with these voluntary initiatives, the Vietnamese authorities have had difficulties to coach and support these new producers in sustainable development schemes for fresh water or brackish water aquaculture. In addition, climate change could significantly affect these areas particularly exposed to rising sea waters. Moreover, aquaculture producers respond to logic relatively isolated individual entrepreneurs. They deliver their products to many collectors who engage strong competition. This is particularly true at the sub-sectors supplying the domestic market. The Vietnamese marketing system for aquaculture products is generally considered competitive and efficient. It involves different stakeholders (collectors, dealers, wholesalers and processors) that develop often difficult short-term strategies to understand and which do not permit a good traceability of production. At producer level, understanding of market mechanisms is very limited which makes it difficult to decision support for investments and marketing. Meanwhile, producers are exposed to high price volatility. Small producers oriented towards the local market are particularly exposed and vulnerable to this issue and it is important to understand the strategies that can be implemented to ensure against this form of risk. In this context, this paper describes two initiatives conducted in the Northern area of Vietnam to strengthen the sustainability of clam’s farms and supported by researchers from Vietnam National University of Agriculture. Clam farming in coastal provinces of Vietnam has notably developed since the last decade. It generated high income, improve socio-economic development for many local communities. However, many clam raising farms are facing difficulties of farm management, disease control, markets and systems of quality control. This research aims to study about the real situation of cost monitoring in the clam raising farms in the Northern area of Vietnam and suggest some recommendation for apply a suitable model for cost monitoring to promote the value added for farmers. The paper based on the semi-structure, standard questionnaires and PRA method to collect data from 89 clam raising farms in two coastal provinces (Nam Dinh and Thai Binh) in the Northern area of Vietnam in 2014. The findings show that clam raising provides farmers a chance of getting high income parallel with high risk. There were 32.15% surveyed farms got profit, 32.14% of them met the breakeven and 35.71% was lost. The study finds out four key factors affecting farms’ economic performance and efficiency. The first is capacity of farm cost control as the cost for clam raising was very high at 8,142 to 9,190 USD per ha. The second is the farmers’ experience, skill, technique and ability of risk control. The third is low, unstable market price and unsuitable market channel with the dominant of the traders. Final factors is the area and location of clam raising. Despite of these difficulties, 55.14% surveyed farms still want to expand their production, 25% of them will continue, and only 17.86% will stop or change to other activities. In order to promote the value added for clam raising farmers, cost control should be paid more attention, improvement of the farmers’ capacity is necessary, and market should be regarded. [less ▲]

Clam farming is a strength in the agricultural development of the coastal communes in Nam Dinh province, which has developed rapidly in recent years. It has many advantages of no investment on food, low capital in technique management, simple care, short cultured time. It could bring high profits for the farmers, create employment for labor in rural area and contribute significantly to local economy. In addition, the model of clam farming can be easily replicated so clam farming attracts a lot of attention from the coastal fishermen, policy makers and participation of scientists. However, the development of clam farming in this province is still spontaneous, without obvious planning and sustainable development strategies. In addition, market becomes more competitive. Farmers manage their farms base on experiences and depend too much on natural conditions, thus they are facing many risks. This lead to the situation of inefficiency, and affects negatively to the clam farming and environment. This research aims to study about cost monitoring in clam farms and analyze the factors affecting the cost monitoring in clam farms in Nam Dinh province. From which, suggestions to develop effectively clam farming and contribute to raise incomes for farmers were given in the next years in Nam Dinh province. [less ▲]
